I can't imagine being blessed with the mad musical genius to compose something like this. Freddie Mercury was a unique musical talent.

Out of context, this song is from another planet (and I love it!) but their second album, Queen 2, was all about pushing boundaries and doing exactly what they wanted in the studio. There is no side 1 and side 2 - there is a side White and a side Black. This is from the black side which is based more in fantasy. Side Black is entirely written by Freddie. Entire album is worth listening to as a whole. As a glance into Freddie's mind and talent, I find it fascinating.

Roy Thomas Baker produced Bohemian Rhapsody and this song. He's famous for panning sounds from ear to ear. He showed Queen how to do that and they carried on the tradition even after he no longer produced them.

This song smoothly blends into the next song "Funny how love is"... this album has a lot of contexting songs typical for Queen until 1977. I loved to see you are taking by surprise as I had been when I listened to it first time :-)

This is actually my favourite Queen song. Considered an ‘older sister’ to Bohemian Rhapsody. It is extremely complex but still the same utter genius. You’re right about Bohemian Rhapsody. You could say it’s a more refined version

If you want to know how it sounds when all the harmonies (incl. the high notes) are sang just by Freddie, listen to the studio version of their song "You Take My Breath Away". 🙂

My favorite too!! I think the structure of this one is alternating. (unlike BoRhap which is sort of ABCBA, chiastic.) There is the black queen and there is the beautiful angelic soul. They go back and forth in tension as they each try to convince the narrator of the song to be loyal to their side. To compose a piece like this Freddie had to be truly a musical genius.

May I suggest 'Liar' be added to the list. The live version of course(!) from Live at the Rainbow 1974. It gives each member of the group an opportunity to shine and is an all round great Queen song. Thanks

Thanks, kids - for this reaction.. this was one of Queen's most unique offerings... lol Glad you noticed John Deacon on bass.. and what about Roger Taylor, drummer and super-high vocals... of course, we all can appreciate Brian May on guitar... look forward to more of your reactions!

yes it's a hidden gem, and yeah Before Bohemian Rhapsody there was March Of The Black Queen! two of Freddie's Masterpiece. Continue more Of Queen, there are more Hidden Gems to discover😉🤟👑
Roger Taylor (drummer) sings the high notes, he also has a raspy and he can have that classic rock voice. Brian May (guitarist) sings the low notes, he has a soft voice and in his solo albums he develops his voice and it gets very powerful. Freddie Mercury (pianist) sings the medium notes, he has a lot of unique traits, everybody knows his voice and the power of it. John Deacon (bassist) sadly doesn't sing, however he rarely do backing vocals live. Vocal Range: Roger Taylor: B♭1 - E6 Freddie Mercury: F2 - F6 Brian May: F2 - G5

It ends abruptly because it segues into the next song. There are only 3 singers. Brian May (lead guitar)has a low warm voice and Roger has the upper notes and Freddie sings everything. They overdubbed the 3 voices over and over to sound like a choir. It is very sad that this album did not get much airplay. The single Seven Seas of Rhye reached #10 on the UK charts but wasn't played anywhere else. It wasn't until Killer Queen was released on the next album Sheer Heart Attack that Queen became popular. This song is very complex and Freddie plays harpsichord and yes! Brian played the bells! 🔔This is a great album. The first album has a song called My Fairy King which is similar with great use of Roger's falsetto and fantasy lyrics. You should react to it! By the time Bohemian Rhapsody came along they were used to Freddie's long complex songs and loved them.

Great Reaction, very observant on the fine details.Rodgers voice is out of this world. if you want to know how Freddy sounds multi tracked, check out you take my breadth away and nevermore and the beginning of Bo Rap and Lilly of the valley and the low falsetto part in march of the black queen, All Freddy multi layered. In Only the good die young, it is just Brian and Rodger multi tracked, but by that time (98 ) Rodger had lost his high voice, maybe due to smoking, 3 great voices

Talking about different textures. Especially in early Queen. Their voices were often interchanging. As in this case. With Roger, aside from harmonies. Singing the line... My life is in your hands. I'll foe & I'll fie. If you continue to react to their studio work. You will find Brian singing the opening lines to some songs as well. I would suggest exploring the album tracks. Queen had totally different arrangements live vrs the studio. Also. Brian & Roger, sing lead on at least. One song per album, sometimes more.

YAYY!! My #2 Queen song!! I love it more than Bohemian Rhapsody!! 💟💜 It’s a MASTERPIECE written by Freddie! The piano is amazing as is Brian’s guitar playing!! I probably listen to this every day … the harmonies!! 🖤🖤Yes, Queen only did the song live as part of a medley. 😁 And agree, it is a distorted Wonderland …. 👉👉 “NOW DO THE MARCH TO THE BLACK QUEEN!!” 🖤

@@GilesMcRiker Roger has made a point of saying he never saw him with a book I've referenced this in other comments that he must have been reading something or had a fantastic english teacher! Brian and Roger had a good education but they were surprised at some of the words or phrases Freddie has used I've had to look up a lot of things! He found been sent away very difficult and felt abandoned and his experience was worse because he was picked on But as he said it probably helped him become stronger But at least he had a good education!

This band so loved what they did. The production on the studio versions is so complex, with the over dubs, harmonies and panning, and to watch them perform live, pure joy! You are right about Roger. He usually takes all the high notes, even though Freddie could get up there! I think it's just to keep the harmonies going. And don't let anyone bully you over Queen. It's your reaction. Your reaction. Your opinion! Are you a bass player? Try Dragon Attack!

one of Freddie love it but yes a lot to deal with on first listen! same as Bohemian Rhapsody there's a lot of theories on what the overall song might mean and that's what adds to it but can also take away from it because you're trying to understand it and it can take away from enjoying it I agree it's composition is far more complicated, Bo Rap isn't simple but much easier to listen to even though there's lots of changes

You cannot make a judgement on a classic song like this or any song by stopping it every minute and then conversing for 3 minutes... listen to the damn song first all the way through!! SHEESH, the generation with a 2-minute attention span. Unbelievable.

your right about Roger, it seems a lot higher than Freddie but it isn't much but the tone? is much different that's why he's often used. if Roger couldn't do that Freddie would still make it work but once you've heard Roger, you would really notice if it wasn't there, it does add another texture?

Please listen to Queens studio tracks first as you are missing out on some beautiful harmonies, and even listen to the complete albums in one especially Queen1 and Queen2 albums, then by all means listen to Queen live.
@vernhoke77302 жыл бұрын
You short changed yourselves. On the album this song goes right into "Funny How Love Is". It adds another minute or two. Queen II is divided into two parts the 1st side is called "Side White" and features lightly themed songs. The 2nd side "Side Black" features songs with a darker side. Actually Freddie does sing alot of the high notes in their songs. Roger has his fair share as well. As for the choir effect, that is accomplished by over dubbing the vocals numerous times.
