You need to visit Queen and Queen 2...so many people overlook their early albums which contain some of their best songs.

One of my favorite Queen songs. It’s a precursor to Bohemian Rhapsody. Freddie is a very underrated writer. His chord progressions are crazy. Queen’s songs need to be listened on headphones in order to hear the stereo spectrum. They do so much panning left to right. It’s an auditory experience! Anyways great reaction!

Mercury's songwriting ability was off the charts. He gets a lot of praise for his voice, but I think his songwriting is what made Queen great. That, and the fact they had genius musicians executing the music. Freddy also doesn't get enough credit for his piano playing. All 4 of them were multi-instrumentalists. Btw, your hair is a beautiful shade of blue.

Freddie’s songwriting was epic, but all of Queen were and are great songwriters-All four wrote many smash hits.

We agree with you. And all 4 of them are great musicians and so perfectly together. 💯 Btw, we believe most of the people were so mesmerized captivated by Freddie’s authentic stage presence, his incredible vocals, his amazing showmanship and they often forget about his magnificent songwriting style; like a poet. His great piano playing skills, and his knowledge in harmonizing in music is really impressive (Roger said Freddie knew exactly what each of the chords should sound like in all of their harmonies). Freddie was also artistically gifted and extremely creative… In our eyes, he truly is a genius.

Nice reaction, it is the story of a Pirate Queen. The songs starts with the calm before the storm and soon there is a battle on sea. (Blue powder monkeys are the soldiers who shot the cannons in ships). They lose the battle, the Black Queen tortures them, she pulls out their finger and toe nails. Then she seduces the narrator. He is conflicted "in each and every man lies a soul...". But he cannot resist her charms, he is completely smitten and won over by her power and command. "I'll be your bad boy". He basically commits treason and joins the Pirate Queen, at the end he realises that his life is now forever changed there is no going back. Freddie wrote a few songs which are in fact fairytale fantasy stories. In the March of the Black Queen he uses a lot of direct quotes from characters that is why the lyrics appear so strange. For example you hear the order from the Black Queen to attack the ship, "take this, take that, bring them down to size".

Basically, a precursor to "Bohemian Rhapsody"
@vovindequasahi4 ай бұрын
I personally like this one better than Bohemian Rhapsody, but that may be because I've just heard that song one too many times. Also this one is rawer and heavier, which to me is a big plus! B.H. only really has one small rocking part. I would probably compare this one more to The Prophet's Song, which I ALSO prefer to B.H.

One of the biggest bands ever - and deservedly so - but I think this whole album gets slept on when people talk about Queen. Queen 2 is amazing throughout - glam/prog/early metal all rolled up into a fever dream of lyrics, visions and fairy tales. I believe it was inspired by the art of Richard Dadd - hence the references throughout. Well worth a repeat listen of the whole album.

Your comments about layering and number of sessions is supported by the band. Roger Taylor claimed that the tape that it was recorded on went transparent and snapped due to the number of times it passed over the recording heads. You're also bang on with the similarities to Bohemian Rhapsody. This is often seen as the song that gave Queen their unique sound that then led into Bo Rhap.

A huge amount of credit for the intricacies of this song, and indeed most of their 70s albums, has to go to their engineer, Mike Stone. According to Brian, he taught the band all the tricks in the studio that would become their trademarks. This song shouldn't be taken too seriously in terms of meaning. Freddie based a number of his earlier songs in the fantasy world of 'Rhye' that he created with his sister, Kashmira. "March of the Black Queen" is considered the centerpiece of the 'Rhye' series. Other songs in the series include; "Great King Rat", "My Fairy King" and "The Fairy Fellers Master Stroke" (inspired by the painting with the same name). All brilliant, check em out.

Some of Queens greatest songs come from the first 2 albums and never made it to the Greatest Hits. Try Liar (live at the Rainbow 1974) and white Queen (live Hammersmith Odeon 1975). Where the creativity, talent and emotion really shine through. A joy for the ears.

The grandeur of their compositions were legendary. There never was or ever will be another band like them . Queen were to rock / Pop that which Mozart was to classical. By the way the entire side of the recording containing this cut , was based on a Tolkien type fantasy world created by Freddie , and incorporates (loosely) bits from Shakespeare's Midsummer Night Dream". In my opinion these guys earned every letter in the word GENIUS!
@stuartneil86824 ай бұрын
The lyrics are very influenced by Lewis Carol’s writing e.g. Alice in Wonderland and the musical left right stuff was a medieval and baroque technique used in Cathedral music as well as something that people played with when stereo was invented. The words are more poetic allusion than a linear exposition and explanation. I first head this when I was about 19 , in the early 1980’s, when the lack of explicit meaning and unusual sound appealed just as much as avant garde classical or futuristic electronic music.
@basstian4 ай бұрын
Mr Mercury was quite taken with stereo effects. This one and 'Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke' are meant to be listened to with (good) headphones. And to think they only had sixteen-track tape machines at the time, and half of them were used for piano, bass and drums only!
@kentnottingham96354 ай бұрын
Bands back then would separate left and right, pan back and forth for part of the trip. Thats what STEREO is all about!!!!! Queen, Pink Floyd and many others did this a lot. Just part of the trip!

Great reaction! This is one of several tracks that I use as evidence that Queen could do progressive...and do it well! Man I love this song! Don't worry too much on the lyrics - it was one of Freddie's flight of fancy and fantasy (he was an art student after all!) If you like the acapella vocal layering, then PLEASE check The Prophet's Song (another ultimate prog example!), from A Night At The Opera (same album as Bohemian) - and you'll be in rapture!! And for contrast, this song was on the 'Side Black' of Queen II, so you NEED to check White Queen (As It Began) from 'Side White' of the album! Do the Live At Hammersmith Odeon version, and you'll hear/see why Queen were a dominant live band!! Cheers!!

There’s been quite a few interpretations. One common one is that’s it’s about a highly controlling sexual relationship. Another one and this was from Brian himself saying he thought it was about the African Black Slave Queen who enslaved her own people and sold them off from Freddie’s birth country of Zanzibar. But in true Freddie style he never said. So who knows.
