@@orektez My mother has Alzheimer's and is in a secure facility. I found that my mom's care home was not paying attention to the residents and one of the male residents (with dementia) was found SAing my mother. They moved the male resident out of the facility but did not tell me all the details. The police got involved (I might have had something to do with that...) and they found details of previous issues with this resident invading my mother's privacy and exposing himself. Now, I do not have any bad feelings toward the man since he had dementia and was not responsible for his actions, but I sure was PISSED at the facility for being slipshod and cavalier. I'm honestly glad that mom doesn't remember/realize what was going on. She was not injured, luckily. The staff that was supposed to be caring for her and monitoring her were disciplined. One was fired outright. The place is now under a new management organization (we'll see if it improves) but I took no chances and hired a hospice team for my mother; they come in often and check everything carefully. I show up randomly and ask questions, and I also check her room for anything "off" or otherwise unusual. The regular visiting doctor and nurses report back to me anything and keep me informed of any incidents, mom's ongoing issues and their progress, etc.

@orektez When they have severe dementia they won't remember visits anyway. I'm not saying family should give up--but the person they knew has gone and they're someone else now. It can be very very hard for family to visit because it's so difficult seeing someone you loved walk around but they're not there anymore. They get yelled at, berated, and no one is to blame it's just a tragedy all around.

It's not always that simple - true story. My friend had both parents still living in their own home with her father suffering from mixed dementia. A nurse was due to go out and visit her Father at home and my friend had said she must be there too and was to be contacted when this would happen. She wasn't contacted. She realised the visit had taken place (cameras everywhere!) and rang to ask why she wasn't contacted. The nurse apologised but explained "his wife was there and answered all the questions I had and I've explained it all to her... To which my friend said, his wife? My Mother? The one with Alzheimer's? 😂 This nurse had no idea, and her Mum could be very convincing. But had no idea who had been to the house when asked. In fact my friend regularly had to remind them both they were husband and wife. There's no ordinarily, usually, or normally with dementia. So pleased this gentleman was reunited with his family.
