Dear Ajahn Brahm, first of all let me say that I listen to your talks daily and they have given me great peace and guidance in my life. However I must respectfully and strongly disagree with your idea of weighted-by-age voting. If that were to happen then laws promoting the healthcare/retirement benefits for older folks would never be passed and senior citizens would be even more marginalized in society. Anyways, thank you again for all the wonderful service you do daily. :))

I agree with you. I'm surprised such a wise man diverted so embarrassingly from his regular zen viewpoint. I think he was personally angered by the Brexit vote and as the Buddha said, when you're angry, you stop striving for the truth and start striving for yourself.

Well he is a monk, I imagine he's in no position to have to worry about a pension or retirement benefits :P You do bring up a good point though, but considering how there's always a low turnout rate among younger crowds I think giving their votes higher priority wills serve more as a balancing force rather than a dominant replacement force.

Maybe giving more vote share to younger people is not a bad idea. Younger people have low voter turnout and old people have the highest. Giving young people more voting share may equalize the voices of young and old people.

The problem with younger people having more say in voting is they are less experienced and have made less mistakes. A smart person learns from their mistakes. A wise person learns from other’s mistakes. If we allow younger people to have more say, we would keep making the same bad policies that don’t work.
@jillianbland8 жыл бұрын
regards voting, older people have more information, more experience, they have seen how wicked politicians work, and how to spot them, they've often lived appalling lives because of them, they've seen greed, they know the past experienced. The young are often naïve , they want to think that everyone is lovely and kind. Youth always think they know more than they do and so could lead themselves and others into terrible situations, Polpot Cambodia is an example, Polpot let children rule and the mass deaths that happened as a result.. everything has a time, the youth will become old and wise, the old and wise will die, the dead will be reborn and they will start over, being born, learning, judging, leading, dying, being born. Follow the natural succession of life.

The talk is live streamed on youtube every friday. There is a chatbox along with the video while streaming goes on. You can post your question there. Generally 2 online questions are chosen to be answered at the end of the talk.

M BN That's age discrimination and not a very wise rule. Don't give up if that's your calling. If you really mean it, maybe you should insist on their consideration. Many of the young monks and nuns disrobe. There is a bleed out rate.

@Buddhist Society of Western Australia Hi, I am Harry, I am new in Perth but I knew Ajahn Brahm since few years, and went to his Dhamma Talk back in Indonesia. Is there any ways how I can go to Bodhinyana Monastery? Because I don't think there is any bus from Perth to Bodhinyana Monastery in Serpentine. I really want to come at least for the Kathina day on October 23rd (I read on website). Please. Thank you.

As mentioned in another video, the idea of younger people getting a greater weight of votes wouldnt work because they may lack maturity to use their power wisely and the weak and elderly in need of say medical care will be out numbered and needs under represented.

As a Buddhist don't you believe in reincarnation? If so shouldn't we all have the same singular vote as we all have the same investment in the future of the world as we're all coming back. You didn't think your comment through did you? I'm off to listen to a wise monk 👍🏻
@PhoenixProdLLC7 жыл бұрын
@16:20 - Um, for the exact same reason you illustrated with stocks. Old people paid in MORE taxes, did all the building, aka they have "more shares". And, btw, Ageism is a thing and it's illegal under federal law. So there's that as well. Pandering to youth will, ultimately, undermine the more important and broader picture. Every single elderly person is a walking Encylopedia of human life and expertise and experience and they are IMMENSELY valuable. AS valuable. And using your shares analogy, have MORE say(which is one reason I disagree with your shares analogy, venerable). There is no evidence that Poe was a psychopath. He is one of the great writers and poets Ajahn! Just because you didn't fancy his work sir, it's not right to say what you did about his mind. He was brilliant, and, sure, sometimes brilliant people ARE "weird" according to the herd. It's ok to be different and unusual. The world world be a horribly boring place if everyone thought, spoke, dressed, and behaved the same! It would be an automaton HELL!
