I can so relate to these videos. My brother is a scratch golfer who is able to use all clubs in the bag. I on the other hand have always been a long, crooked hitter. I can launch it 300 yards into the trees with the best of them. One day he announced that we were going to play 36 holes. First 18 my way, second with him as my caddie. I shot my normal 96 on the first 18. Then he said we needed to go back to the truck. He took all my woods out of the bag and locked them in the truck. I was not allowed to tee off with anything greater than a 5 iron. I shot 87. Point taken. Every since then I have believed in the methods you teach here. I thought it wouldn't be fun but it is fun getting comments from other golfers, smiling, and saying "want to play for money?" hahaha. I now shoot low 80's most of the time. Rarely use my driver. Usually tee with my hybrid. This stuff works people.

You put emphasis on putting, but just in case people are just glossing over that, think about the putting in relation to score and mental approach. First, consider a putt versus any other shot in golf. Off the tee, from the fairway, a bunker, whatever, you're just trying to hit an area. But even if you don't, you're generally ok. With a putt, its black and white. You have to hit a small target and if you miss, it is at least 1 more whole stroke. By nature, that makes the putt completely different and more pressure packed. The other thought is, you had several putts around 4 to 8 feet. You made almost all of them, whereas most golfers would be lucky to make half. If you couldn't make 80 percent or more of these like you do, you could easily add 5 or 6 strokes per round. Taking a 75 to an 80+. Thats a huge deal.
@GolfSidekick5 жыл бұрын
Our House, I have read this maybe 10 times and as a slow person who doesnt get nuance, I can’t figure out the intent/meaning/angle of it. Can you elaborate? Not being snarky, just curious cos I am genuinely feeling slow lol
@OurHouseChannel5 жыл бұрын
@@GolfSidekick Sorry I am a wordy bastard. I had 2 points. 1 is that youre an excellent putter. Especially inside of 8 feet. It saves you 3 to 5 strokes oer round. My second point was to say that putting is a different mental thing than all other shots in golf. How do you know when you hit a good 8 foot putt? It goes in. How do you know what a good tee shot is? It could be in a million different 2" places in the fairway and far more than 1 of those spots is good. Putting is definite and its math. All other strokes are interpretive.

Great video and advice Matt. Can I ask, if you could only use either a gps device or a laser rangefinder, which would yo go for? My gps has recently broken and I'm wondering if I should coin up and get a bushnell. Thanks again
@GolfSidekick5 жыл бұрын
I would do a bushnell. A gps watch is great to start with especially for using the function to measure shots on foot. Then you know your club distances. The thing with a bushnell is that you can shoot distances to stuff you wont find on the gps and be 100% accurate. So I always shoot bunker lips, water carry at different points, trees, players in the group ahead. I was always one of those ‘pff im gonna pace off my distance’ kind of guys then I got a rangefinder. Now I would have to say its the most game changing thing in the bag. Nothing like the confidence knowing the distance to stuff so you can hit the right club.
@slrobinson35 жыл бұрын
Thanks Matt top man. Yeah I'm swaying that way I must admit. The only thing I fear I might miss is having a hole layout on the screen like my old one and then the problems with blind shots. Sometimes it's good to getting a quick distance to the middle of the green. But an inaccurate middle of the green distance obviously isn't as good as a precise measurement to the pin. A pro I know how offered to lend me his bushnell to try it out so that's good. Thanks again playa.
@GolfSidekick5 жыл бұрын
Steve Robinson give it a try and you may find you prefer the gps. Perfect world you use both. Depends on priorities. Im sure youll end up going with the rangefinder haha!

Strategies to follow in The Way of the Match Playa? Entering first match play tournament soon, and should receive a few HC strokes. Wondering: any difference in strategy if the stroke holes are bunched early in the round or late?
@GolfSidekick5 жыл бұрын
When I play matchplay and played it in the past, the key is to be ruthless. If you get up on the guy, dont ever feel bad for him and play differently. You must crush him. If he screws up a hole and you have two putts to win a hole from 6 feet, take the two putts. If he screws up a hole from the tee by going OB or in a bad position, get it in play with the most stress free shot possible. The one you feel so confident with. Dont change the confident club in your hand if he stripes one off the tee or sticks on super close. Youll lose holes and youll win them. Its 18 holes dont worry. I used to always come back from being 3 or 4 down. If the holes with the strokes are up front, just play your normal game. If you get up by 2 or 3 quickly, keep going and dont ever feel Sorry for him. If the strokes are at the end, you gotta make sure youre still in it by then. Just keep playing stress free and attacking golf. You can only lose a hole not an entire score. Its not the monthly medal. So if you take 9 on one hole, it doesnt affect the next hole because youre not counting. Just get that ball in the hole in as few shots as possible. One hole at a time. Dissect it and plan it and own it. Do your best and avoid getting too involved in his game and what he is doing and dont let his game change your approach to the game. Be firm in the way you play the game and do what works for you. Plant feathers

Any tips for playing raised ( like an island ) greens? Front 9 of my fave course is built this way, and some of them are highly sloped from back to front. I try to ply them short, but then I end up. With chip shots that have to get up to 5’ in the air to just make the green. If I hit to soft I’m into the side of the hill, too hard and I’m on the other side of the hill. Very frustrating
@GolfSidekick5 жыл бұрын
Hmmm I would avoid any area where you need to chip them up onto a raised green. If they are sloped severely back to front then you should be more aggresive and play for middle of the green because they should hold the ball up from rolling over the back. The slope may stop the ball quicker for you. Around the greens, surely they aren't all raised up like islands all the way round the green? If the holes are well dsigned, there will be bail out areas which leave more reasonable chips. Only a sadistic designer would make the greens raised 360 degrees around the green and expect every handicap to land it and stick it on the green with no regard for recovery shots?? Look for the bail out areas and try err on that side while going for the middle of the green. Maybe there are some flat areas where you can hit the ball around the green so a chip will be from the same level as the green? If not, I would highly recommend finding a new favorite course! That sounds really impractical!

You gotta make it. I made it in powerpoint and then export as a jpeg and then click and drag it onto each clip in my video editor

My new profile ‘Whataplaya One’. Worried about the slightest curvature to the right at the end of my swing but you have the same. Does straightening up help if you can do it? How tall are you? What ball do you use?
@GolfSidekick5 жыл бұрын
I dont think too much about it but what did help me on the drives was contracting my core which is weird but I guess it made me keep my height througout the swing and also take the mind away from the swinging of the club. It will be in the next four or five videos. I played at The Vintage club. Look out for it. Im 178cm i think thats 5’9? I use mostly Callaway Chrome Soft, Srixon AD333Tour, QStar Tour, Volvik S3 and Taylormade project A

I'm a new subscriber to your channel. Why are you playing with old clubs that aren't even a full set? Do you not travel with your clubs?
@GolfSidekick5 жыл бұрын
I was travelling with my normal clubs but just felt like going old school and having a new challenge. I do love wooden woods. I'll be continuing to do this but next time with old golf balls from the 80s too. I'm always trying to relate stuff to all handicaps. I also play left handed so I can relate to high handicappers and begtinners. There'll be a mix of stuff coming so everyone gets something out of it!

What country is that and do u take your own clubs to countries?
@GolfSidekick5 жыл бұрын
Thailand and yes I had left handed clubs, my normal clubs and thse old clubs to choose form. i chose the old ones because they were most fun!

You've had those shoes for awhile now, how do you rate them?
@GolfSidekick5 жыл бұрын
Honestly, they suck balls. Sole is peeling off in two places on one shoe and one place on the other. Now I am undecided between Pumas which look so comfy and a set of footjoys with nice soft insoles. I won't be bothering with Nike again. I will put it in another video. They were peeling after the first 6 rounds with them.

@GolfSidekick5 жыл бұрын
Sir, it's a process, as long as you're making better decisions more of the time than the previous time, then you're well on your way. A playa is not merely made overnight. As the old saying goes "A playa wasn't built in a day"...
@jacobmccain80825 жыл бұрын
I notice you're hitting mostly cuts this episode. The last few it's been 70+% draws. Why the change?
@GolfSidekick5 жыл бұрын
I think it was because I was actually a little bit sore in my right shoulder and lower back, and I was trying to protect that because I played the Bhumibol Dam course the day before and I was trying to hit the driver too hard. It's amazing when you have the unknown in your hands (old clubs), how you fall back on old habits!
