I played my 4th round in Kanchanaburi at BLUE STAR GOLF COURSE which smacked me across the face by how challenging it was. This is easily me new favorite course. 7200 yards off the back and danger on every shot. It was great to be thinking on every shot because the course forced me too.

Yes, i may have broken par on this nine, but be warned, the second nine was a different story as lack of sleep and a 45 minute halfway stop chatting with my dad took it's toll.
In this episode of The Way of the Playa: A Fistful of Birdies, the greens were incredibly slow, perhaps running at 8.5 on the stimp. The Korean groups come through and with all the traffic, they have no option but to keep them furry to survive. I really do not like slow greens and find them difficult to putt on.
It's a new course and still settling in as the carts are used in the fairways and grass is not quite tightly growing into itself.
The main points in breaking par on this first nine from the tips, were:
1. A total immersion in the shot. Identify what you need to do and commit 100% to it. Not 50% or 90% but 100%
You see the effects of NOT doing this on hole number 6.
2. Swing WITHIN YOURSELF. This is the smoothest my swing has looked in some time. I took one more club on a lot of shots and swung easy. i hit harder shots with the clubs I was more confident with like the 6 iron.
THIS IS THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE between this nine and the second nine which you can compare to. By swinging within yourself, the irony is you hit it longer very often, but more importantly, with WAY MORE control!
3. To break par, greens are important. I mean it goes without saying that you need to make putts to make birdies and to make putts you need to be on the green under regulation. If the greens were a bit quicker, I really liked my chances of making one or two more putts too.
4. you need an accurate driver and a go-to club on the tougher tighter holes especially on new courses like this which make you uncomfortable on every tee shot.
5. Commitment is key!

Golf Sidekick™️got my whaddaplaya golf shirt, in red like Tiger. And the 400 yard promise, and then the ladies! Now you may think this story may be made up for whatever reason, but I assure you it’s true. I drove out to the 5th to get some space, a par 5 570yd, as I hadn’t warmed up so I hit 3 balls to get a feel. Par 4 at the next, 320yd par 4 but I underestimated the wind. Wanted 130 in for an 8 iron. Hit 3 iron, not sweet but ok. 160 left. Pin back right , hit 4 iron. Hit it sweet, the birdie music rang in my ears as I watched the ball hover with menacing intent all over the flag...20ft short, 2 putt. So the next, 540+ downhill with that wind. Now remember, you promised me 400yd drives! You have to be accurate here, as it’s a double layered fairway, 230 to catch the chute, funnels down to 200yds away, but go straight and get a good bounce, and gain 20+yds. I creamed it, high to get the benefit of the wind. You don’t see where it ends up as it’s down a chute to a lower plateau. I looked in the usual spot, no ball. The shape of the hole is slightly right to left so I walked up the semi rough up the right to the 150 yd marker. Never thought it could have passed that, not with a £100 10.5 driver. So played a provisional. I carried on walking and there it was, my ball from the tee- at least 15 yds past the 150yd marker. That’s a 405+ yard drive, which ran out of fairway, and the rough slowed it up or else I’m blocked by trees. I had to go over some branches but 135 with that wind (although sheltered on the lower plateau and the steep chute 65yds behind) was an easy 9 iron out of the rough, but a decent lie. I was thinking of some eagle music for your channel as I had a ten footer for eagle. Like my putt, it didn’t happen. However the next, 150yd par 3 crosswind left to right with bunker either side and automatic reload right, I hit 7 iron to what looked close. Cue birdie music. No distractions of eagle music. Got up there and 20 foot short as pin was back again and it’s uphill and played for the centre, which I hit. It was a 3 foot swing left to right. Undeterred, as I hit it as I intended, and with birdie music playing, I rolled the sweetest putt one can wish for which was never anywhere but going home, baby. The balls natural comfortable place is within the cup. You need to send the ball home (Caddyshack reference, lol). My ball settled in the hole for a quick rest after being smashed over 400 yds 6 shots earlier. I was buzzing with back to back birdies, and just misjudgment of the wind strength on the, essentially first, I was looking for the triple birdie I thought my play deserved. But, as with golf, you know what happens next. Par 5, uphill blind tee shot as the hill is so steep (back up the hill from my 400yd+ drive (did I mention that?).I was supremely confident and not stress free, but stress positive. Three reloads later, after trying to beat that steep hill and vicious wind, I took the hint and practiced chipping for the last hour of light. So, the first time I played golf with my new Whaddaplaya t-shirt, I actually hit a 400 yard drive. Yes wind, yes downhill, but accuracy was key. About 15-20yd wide target or overshoot chute or blocked by trees. The promise intact. I plan to war it on my next night out...I believe ladies are also guaranteed! Right? Thanks Matt Ps You’re the best golf KZbinr and finest course strategist since that David Leadbetter fella’ I used to watch as a kid. Walking around Lake Nona with with a 10 handicapper (a hustler if ever there was one... soft spoken, hits it like a scratcher, but most likely the pro at one of the best courses in America) and talking him through each shot after first asking what the player was thinking what to do. It’s called- “David Leadbetter - Taking it to the course”. It’s obviously got to fulfil all the things he wants to cover in one 90 min video as they only had one video to get it all in, being pre internet KZbin, but it’s too scripted and over acted. The shots he let the guy do himself are done on purpose like a typical 10 handicapper to make a teachable moment. It is good for info but he isn’t entertaining enough by today’s standards. It’s like work, enjoyable work, but work all the same. It’s too serious and teaches how to play like, or think like more accurately, a tour pro. That’s blatantly not real world ,unless you’re one of those obsessive golfers that looks the part, talks the part, but can’t break 80 and never will. They’re frustrated but the club pro’s bread and butter. Amateur golf is about fun but this also gives you a chance of winning. Tour Pros even say after a great round how much they enjoyed it and how comfortable they were. Looks dated because it is not authentic. It’s useful but not fun. You are leading the way...Peter Finch and Rick Shiels try to be authentic but play the best courses in the world with the best players. This is not relatable. Your style, attitude and talent are. You bring both the authenticity and fun, too. That’s your USP! WhaddaYoutuba! 🎼 Daaah, dah, dah, dah, daah 🎼 🐥 ❓🎼🦅❓

Your stress free golf has seriously helped me improve. I am long off the tee but can be inaccurate, and was constantly being pushed by the people I played with to hit driver. @@GolfSidekick For sure! @@edgemasterrlol LOL bro when I was 23, I didn't go out drinking one week on the Friday, woke up fresh as a daisy Saturday and shot a 69, beat a tour pro who shot a 70 that day. Won 5 prizes. I stopped going out drinking on Fridays thereafter. I thought I was the man shooting 75-77 totally hungover. Little did I know! At least on the course you can smoke all the way round! But I reckon this halfway stop is the worst thing for amateurs. That's why I like Thai golf in general. We stop every few holes for a quick drink and do it standing up. The western idea of 9 hole halfway, man it kills momentum. I reckon the best place to stop is the 12th. But even then, while standing up and not sitting in an airconditioned halfway house!

Any reason you went for the green in two on #9? Cutting the dogleg through some trees seems like higher stress... or is it because you're so confident with the 2-iron bomber that it's NOT high stress for you? Seems like 6i then wedge follows more closely to the low-stress mantra. Just curious. Keep up the great content!
@GolfSidekick
@GolfSidekick 5 жыл бұрын
Good question. There was very little danger there and I do have a tendency to push it with the 2 iron if I hit too hard. I should have swung easier but subconsciously I knew I wouldn't really clear that tree on the hill. That caused me to push it. I knew a push wouldn't be punished and I would have a great angle into the hole. But if I could go back, I would probably hit my 2 iron again, further left of the tree with a cut because now I know how the hole is laid out. I didn't know what happens to the hole when I was standing in the fairway. So I was a little stressed, but then a lay up would have been stressful too, because I had no idea where the hole went or what lay over that mound. I could have checked but I didn't which was silly

@@GolfSidekick Makes sense! In many ways, that's the "strokes gained" mindset as well. If you are split between two decisions, both of which have "some" stress, go for the one that gets you closer to the green. At least that's how I've played it. I often find myself re-watching certain videos before a round to get into the right mindset and have, on more than one occasion, started playing your "birdie music" in my head when I'm walking up to the green after stuffing an approach. I went to an in-person lesson with a PGA pro who I have known since I was a kid but never went to for lessons. He is well-known in my home town and really is a great coach who helps you fix small things. Mine was literally just employing the David Duval head up movement so I can release my upper body to turn square to the target. In terms of online, I only follow Robin Matthews Williams and a guy on Instagram called @hogansbooklied These are all I need to firstly get out of my own head and then I like the fact that hogansbooklied talks about the swing NOT being started by the hips which is where I got all my back pain from. That is a fallacy that has downed many golfers. I also like the way when I hit GREAT shots, often my legs are in the same position as a skier navigating a hill. He promotes the skier legs. In terms of changing it though, I have to admit I have been slack. I should be way ahead of where I am now. I haven't hit the driving rage to groove the feeling since about early January. That is not acceptable.

These are still the Mizunos. I havent shot any videos with the Srixons yet. Its been 102+ degrees out here every time I play and had the squirts last week so bad Iw as close to passing out. Learning them at the moment but DAMN THEY ARE LOOOOOOONG and forgiving too. Hitting way more accurately now.

Totally changed my outlook on clubs when it comes to new playas. Buy something that will give you the best chance and best foot forward. Just a decent 7 and 8 iron individual irons will suffice but something made in the lat 3-5 years will really make people love the game

@@GolfSidekick Agree. I'm of the opinion that one can buy a better game (2-3 strokes) when exchanging older clubs to something current. Her new sticks have definitely renewed her interest in playing more so was worth rhe investment just for that. That being said I found her older but recent version of hybrids she was fitted for with same shafts for like $50 on 2nd Swinggolf.com. That website is the bomb for getting recent clubs at discount. Can't wait to see the Srixon videos Playa!

I need to start practicing again and get the skills working. May and June will be intensive work on the game in Malaysia. Currently, in April, I feel a bit lost especially on the greens. Still shooting between 70 and 78 but every now and then I can slip a little 84 in there. Gotta be disciplined and practice but growing the greatest KZbin channel and golf movement takes time!

Driver would work on hole 2 if I had played before but the view from that tee box was schiesse inducing. Hole 8, the top of the fairway on the 90° dog leg was within range and I didn't now what would be over it. If I play the course a second time, I may hit it on those 2 holes. But generally, driver is reserved for the MUST HIT situations.

LOL I play what's on offer. They have tons of land here where space is not at a premium. This course was tough believe me. Water left, water right, long carries over water. No OB sure, but when you're standing on the tee box on 2 and have a blind tee shot but all you CAN see is water right, and on the 3rd with pretty much WATER and then a sliver of fairway which also has bunkers and water left, it's enough to raise the blood pressure more than an OB. I will play tighter course wherever I find them. I don't pick courses based on any particular criteria besides promotion rates and prices of green fees.

That course, beautiful as it is, looks like it was designed by Pete Dye's evil brother. Very well-played on the front. Those tee shots on 3 & 4 were so clutch... wow. To me, the 3rd hole looked like the most stressful, followed by, ummm... all the others. :) "Thinking with my brain, 'Left, at the trees, with a little draw. I'm not thinking about anything else.'" [Demons] LOL! Process breakdown! Prepare to dump left! Everyone watching knows that scenario all too well.
