Absolutely hooked on this restoration Kalle. I get a lot of enjoyment from the entire process, particularly choosing how to restore the watch, maintaining its character where it matters most and sourcing the correct parts etc where necessary. I'm very excited to see the end result of the Rolex!

You are doing incredible job! My wife is an archaeologist and they are putting steel object into the distilled water instead to penetrating oil. Because there is osmotic effect, minerals come from rust into the distilled water, which softens the rust to be easier to clean.

I’m amazed the hairspring is still existing as well! You could also soak the entire movement in warm Alum water for a few days. Anything steel/rust will completely dissolve, but main plates and wheels would be fine.

Thanks for the update, things are really moving forward with a ton of work. I admire your patience! Will you preserve some of the non-reusable parts and give them to Mr. Steele, maybe you could so some sort of nice display like encasing the (brittle) presentable parts in acrylic(?)

I think you are avoiding Evapo-Rust because of the staining risk. I would guess that it would not stain the brass parts, but of course you can't find out on a client watch. Still, I would be tempted to try it, maybe, on some of the brass wheels that you aren't planning to re-use anyway.

Incredible efforts were put in this project, I just can’t wait to see the new balance wheel when it start going and you can say: It’s alive(like the dead coming back to life (aka: Frankenstein story). Too be able to actually unscrew the palate fork cock was amazing. When the screw moved, there was a collective gasp across the globe. I really hope that you can salvage the balance wheel and provide true continuity with the restored movement. Kalle, do you think that using a waterpik filled with isopropyl alcohol would be effective in removing the rust?

You go on and on about "the vintage movement" and as a n00b in the field of watches this makes me wonder how a not-vintage, or modern, simular watch would look. Is that very much different?

Evaporust? Removes all the rust, leaves the steel untouched. Probably isn't worth buying a gallon just for watches but a Rover owner must have other uses for it!

Could you not save the pallet fork jewels, clean them and resell on eBay? They are genuine Rolex and could be shellacked into a pallet fork in replacement.
