Hello dear friends,
I truly hope this finds you well!
To be honest, I wasn't sure if I wanted to post anything due to the heartbreaking events currently happening in Ukraine. Then, I got a few messages asking when I'd be posting next, because my videos bring them comfort. That's when I was reminded of what I always wanted my channel to be, which is a safe space for you and I to go to feel comforted and at peace.
Right now, it feels as if there is a great lack of peace in the world, so I hope this simple little vlog can bring you a bit of that peace and light back to you!
Although we've been through many storms, remember that we've been through them together!
My thoughts are with you all, and I hope you're okay!
Sending you my love, care, and support,
Carolyn (& Willow)

The degree of pain and shame I'm experiencing right now is unutterable. The very idea of being associated with those who commit such vicious crimes absolutely mortifies me. I know that a lot of Russians are shocked and horrified beyond any measure. Carolyn, thank you for your video. It really is comforting, especially now. 🙏 Culture is an inextinguishable conversation that we need so much.

I hope you know that most of the world doesn't blame Russians at all. My brother-in-law is from Moscow and I grew up with ballet teachers from St. Petersburg and Perm all my life. I know their families, some of their best friends or in-laws are from Ukraine and they are all terribly sad about this. The people are not represented by their government. People have never wanted war in history, it's only those few in power who unfortunately make the decision for everyone. Let us just hope for better times to come sooner rather than later.

Thank you for speaking about the situation in Ukraine and offering comfort in such awful times! I’m so ashamed of what my country is doing but it feels like I can do nothing to help… it’s like a bad dream or a sleep paralysis. Life will never be the same but your videos make me believe in some sort of normalcy and I’m incredibly grateful for that.

Maybe with people like you Carolyn and you soothing voice and company, even if it's just online or by the phone. Thank you Carolyn for this video. Being as enthusiast of Russian literature like you, I can relate to what you are feeling about the current situation. Interesting I am reading now Master and Margarita which is giving me a bit of comfort. In fact, I wanted to make a visit to Moscow in a couple of months, but no I see no hope of that. I really hope that all of us understand that people who lead a normal usual life are more courageous and brave than the people who go after power to rule over others.

Tanizaki wrote also In Praise of Shadows about Japanese vs Western esthetics. I found it helpful to understand the description of Japanese interiors in any Japanese literary work. The Leopard is another fantastic work! I’m sure you would also enjoy Luchino Visconti’s film with Burt Lancaster in the title role, Claudia Cardinale and Alain Delon. I recently watched the movie ‘Drive My Car’ where the main protagonist adapts Uncle Vanya into many languages and stages it for a live audience in Hiroshima. Not to spoil too much in the movie, but he practices his part as Vanya by playing back a tape of the lines while he drives his car! You should watch it after you’ve read Uncle Vanya 💌

Im a public policy analyst here in America and so I have some insight as to what’s going on. If you need some insight, I hope you’ll read my comment. I adore Russia and its music, literature, culture and people….and that’s why I LOVE this channel. Carolyn loves its literature as much as I do. The Russians deeply love their country as I do mine…America. They are very nationalistic and will fight anyone who dares invade. Ukrainians are the same way. They have been embroiled in war for decades; incursions etc. it’s all very complicated. Putin is taking advantage of a very weak America. When America is weak, bad things happen in our country but esp the rest of the world…the domino effect is very real and scary. Many countries depend on America for their defense etc and when we have weak leadership, everyone suffers and we see that playing out now! It’s awful. To all of us who worry about what is going on….you can make a difference; get as educated as possible and be careful who you vote for. This last election brought us so much pain, economically(for sure) but also just look at what’s happening in Ukraine and soon to be Taiwan and the Balkans. It’s been a disaster. As Americans we must vote carefully because elections have consequences. Also, Robert Frost once said that they thing about life is that is just goes on and on. He’s right. We will survive this because we are the greatest nation on earth(but with awful politicians!). Try to go about your life as best you can because we aren’t guaranteed another moment; time is basically an illusion. We must get involved in politics, study, and vote for good people. We turn all this around with God at our center and bad politicians out of office. The awful thing about war is the best of us die while the worst of us(the elites, politicians)get rich. This is true in every war. Better days are ahead.

You are right elections do have consequences. The last president wanted to be just like Putin. Thank God we now have a strong president who is stand strong against Putin's regime.

here are some facts for those who hypocritically moralize against russia. especially those from western countries (who have been willfully ignoring the fact usa and nato is conducting multiple wars killing, bombing, occupying , looting all over the world ). ukraine regime was installed by a usa backed coup in 2014. and employs neonazis, was attacking russian speakers for 8 years, with 11000+ confirmed(by ocse) killed by ukraine, and wanted to join nato, usa's preferred instrument for killing and looting countries. these are verifiable facts. and it is a fact, that in this century, usa led oligarchic regimes, have killed millions, in multiple wars to loot resources (that is more than any other current regime). russia is not going to let itself be looted. period. fact that all that went before russia entered ukraine last week, was largely ignored in western media is not an excuse to suddenly adapt western media narrative. that make those who do that, manipulated parrots of propaganda.

Ah, a tankie spreading fascist propaganda on what should be a lovely channel about books and culture, and defending Russia's imperialist invasion of an innocent country.

Tanizaki has a famous essay on visual aesthetics you might like, called In Praise of Shadows. Japanese culture is fascinating. I feel great respect for the Japanese for their cultural accomplishments - they are some of the richest in the world. Whoever sent you Tanizaki made an interesting choice and it would be great to see you talk about him. I was actually thinking of sending you something Japanese - Basho's classic The Narrow Road to the Deep North. But then I opted in favor of something Russian, though you will find, once it arrives, that this Russia was a great Japanophile. Many Russians are, actually. I know a few people in Japan, and one of them is a nihonga painter. Her name is Kyoko Nakamura. She isn't famous, but her work is lovely and very interesting. You can see samples of it on her website(s). She likes to combine traditional Japanese and western subject matter, creating hybrid worlds. She also likes to combine close, naturalistic observations of nature with subtle irrealism. One example is a long scroll called Sawachi De Moby Dick. There is a video here kzbin.info/door/OxgCJwk30cQubG0T-XtxKQ Thanks for the unboxing. I'm not sure how to transliterate Petrosyan. That -yan is not two sounds, not i-a-n, but a single, brief soft -jan. ;)
