Perfect video for this day. Thank you so much. Christmas Eve is very quiet since the kids have grown and married and my husband passed last year, so quieter than I can stand actually. Yet, Christmas morning is chaos as the grands decend and the fun and joy and love and life abound. Our morning starts with the Happy birthday song to Jesus, then brunch. I’m fixing a ham, hash brown casserole, green bean casserole, charcuterie board, deviled eggs and some desserts. My son doesn’t eat ham so I’m fixing him a piece of marinated chicken. I have a tradition where I buy my kids and my grandchildren pajamas every year. They get their new pj’s on Christmas Eve. This year we are especially grateful that my sister is with us. She was very sick 2 years ago and my brother in law had a small stroke a couple of weeks ago so we spent Christmas Eve eating Chinese food and watching A Christmas Story.

I'm always excited to see a video pop up from you Abbey Jo and this one is so special of you cooking with your daughter :) what a legacy !! My Nana always loved to bake and was so happy in her kitchen; she passed that on to me. To answer your question about what we do for Christmas: Christmas Eve, we go to our daughters (she has 6 children), we eat dinner together, watch a movie and we give gifts to our grandchildren. Christmas day, we rotate between houses for hosting. I always end up cooking a lot of food. The weather is stinking hot in New Zealand so it can be quite grueling. This year we had Ham, Scalloped potatoes, a grain salad, potato salad, garlic bread, green salad, Green beans and dessert: Pavlova, trifle, jelly :) Next year I want to make some changes. I think it was too stressful for me this year. You've inspired me to slow down and enjoy little moments more. My health doesn't always cooperate and I know it's necessary that I do make changes. Yes, I too have felt the need to slow down this Christmas! Especially since I had to work on Christmas Day. I’m a carer in a residential home and it was so special this year! Like yourself I took it easy, FaceTimed my sister who lives in Baltimore ( I live in England, married an Englishman. ), but haven’t sent any cards abroad so expensive! I sent Christmas messages to friends and family using email cards, which is so much cheaper! Anyway, gave fewer gifts this year, but what they really want. Love your thrifted popcorn maker! I do mine in a deep frying pan. We have a woodburning stove in our living room which keeps the downstairs cozy and warm, plus heating bills down. My son made homemade egg nog, which we turned into to ice cream ( my husband has an Italian gelato ice cream maker ) was sooo good. We celebrated Christmas yesterday, had a barbecued ham ( my husband does it on a Weber’s barbecue grill ), mashed potatoes, Brussel sprouts ( steamed ), then sautéed in bacon bits, candied sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, gravy and roast carrots. I roast them with a little olive oil, thyme and a little maple syrup drizzled over it. Oh and a little sea salt, sprinkled over them. For dessert, I baked a coffee cake, which is totally different in England. It’s actually a cake made with coffee, with coffee flavoured buttercream icing. For decoration, I placed a few walnuts over the iced cake. Also, made homemade sugar cookies and my son made chocolate chip cookies. Had my husband’s family down yesterday, they enjoyed everything. Have plenty of leftovers. Oh and I can’t forget we made homemade sausage rolls ( a British snack food ). We get the sausage meat from the butchers, flavour it anyway you want, roll out a sheet of puff pastry, place the meat and shape it into a long sausage, then place the puff pastry over the sausage eat. You can find the recipe if you’re interested, look up Delia Smith, that’s the cook who’s given me the inspiration!

For Christmas Eve we will have a lasagna with rosemary focaccia, a large salad with apple cider vinegar and then pumpkin cheese cake for dessert. Christmas will be ham, baked mac and cheese, squash casserole, broccoli salad, a seven layers ranch bacon salad, a jell-o ribbon, sourdough rolls, roasted rainbow carrots, with pecan bars and apple pie for dessert. We have slowed way way down too. Our youngest is now four and she lost her first tooth a week ago and I was a miss. It was such a joyful time but it was a big shock how all five of my children are growing up so very fast. Our oldest is fifteen and we know that the years she is home is becoming shorter and shorter. I want to enjoy all the things with everyone. Church, cooking/baking, walking, games, puzzles, listening to music, and reading books out loud are the things that we have been doing. We do the same thing with our kids at the Dollar store. We also make a lot of items and they absolutely love watching the others open their hand made gifts. We are a family that enjoy hiding our gifts and give written clues as to where the gift is hidden. For the older one they have several clues...it's so fun and they help one another to listen to the clues and get so excited for the joy. It has been so fun to see that tradition fill our home. I have enjoyed all that you have shared here on youtube!!! Merry Christmas

Lovely video to sit down and watch with a hot cup of tea after a very very busy season! We have a wonderful Christmas Eve dinner, I do a whole filet mignon (yes, expensive, but worth it and it makes a couple days of leftovers) scalloped potatoes, roasted sugared carrots, homemade rolls, a sweet potato gratin, Yule log and a couple pies. I then do Christmas Day brunch, orange stuffed croissants, sausage, bacon, hominy. I then, and I will say that my kids are 19 and 24 not littles!!, I take down all the decorations and tree. It’s a joke everyone checks in to see if I have it down earlier than last year. I then scrub down the house for hours and it feels so good. I feel like after weeks of baking and cooking so much everything is covered in grease and flour. It feels so relaxing to me to have it all down and put away. I then spend the week (after taking the day after off because I’m exhausted) going thru and organizing all the cabinets and drawers. It’s a restorative week for me. Happy new year!! Christmas Day is always gumbo! Shrimp, andouille sausage and king crab legs for later in the day. Morning time is a pre prepared homemade breakfast casserole to pop in the oven to enjoy post presents. It is always simple and focused on memories which seem to be more important to my boys than gifts.

I think the first time I ever made an apple pie it was in an old 1860s wood stove. It was when I worked as a heritage interpreter at a museum. My dream is to have a wood stove in my own home so I’m not relying on power to heat or cook.

Thank you, Abby Jo, this was lovely. When the cool weather comes, I'll hope to make your pie and the sauce. What you say of home-making as a way to slow down and truly live is so wise and refreshing to hear. We need our souls replenished in this season and our relationships are precious and short-lived. At the end of our earthly lives only our relationships will matter, not the rest of it, not most of what we fret and stress over. Wise words about making memories the priority. My oldest daughter is 31, my middle daughter is 28 and expecting a baby(our first grandchild) next March and our son, 19 and now working and training as a mechanic. We enjoy a Christmas Eve traditional roast meal, a cooked breakfast Christmas morning and church comes in between. I'm making pavlova to take to my daughter's, since it's summer here in Sydney. As usual I watched this video through twice. I am a cat person, too. I enjoy their antics!! It is so important to enjoy every moment with your loved ones. My children are grown with families of their own. Truthfully, Christmas is not the same. I do get to spend a lot of time with my daughter's family but my son lives halfway across the country and they have a 5 week old little girl that I have yet been able to hold. Maybe soon! Growing up in Mexican town in Detroit as well as Yuma AZ traditional Christmas dinner is homemade tamales and menudo. But my husband doesn't care for menudo, so I have swapped it with posole. Christmas day can be many things from ham to lasagna to prime rib, but we must have deviled eggs on the table somewhere. Merry Christmas my friend!

Merry Christmas Abby Jo and to your sweet family, Christmas Eve eve I had one of my son's family over and one of my daughters family over for dinner as with in laws they rotate years , then tonight on Christmas Eve I had my older daughter and family over I made Michigan Pasties ( where we lived and fell in love with them) I love your low key days. My family is Italian but I change up the menu from year to year sometimes we do Tamales one year lasagna one year Pasties and sometimes ham or turkey lol. 🙏

Her recipes live on. I definitely need to check out even more. Consumerism is destroying society. Watching ppl setting goals from influencers that are dare I say so unrealistic and commercial in style. I much prefer our way of life though its humble. I will continue to create my sanctuary over the years. We forgot what it means to enjoy the holidays, stress free. Doing things the old fashioned way is definitely the way to go! I am glad you have traditions in place. Your kids are blessed. With go on having wonderful lives. I get books for my brother he always enjoy them. I can’t wait for more videos! ❤

I do both Xmas eve and day. On the eve I made a lasagna, will have salad and home made crusty bread. Christmas Day, I have beef tenderloin, white garlic potatoes, a sweet potatoes casserole,, a broccoli casserole, green beans and green salad. Home made desserts. Merry Christmas to you all.

Merry Christmas! I love your channel. After watching a few of your episodes I moved a lamp into the kitchen, instant cozy, and have been gently shuffling things around. We are having a small Christmas Day but a bigger Christmas season as we focus on a little something Christmasy every day. I’m hoping this carries through out next year - very little stress and pretty much ignoring commercialism. We’re having brisket, homemade Mac and cheese, roasted potatoes and corn, all family favorites today since my youngest will spend tomorrow with his wife’s family. Also last weekend was my oldest son’s birthday so we enjoyed pizza, wings, etc. all sorts of finger foods. Settling in for a nap. Very content.
