In the cottage kitchen today we are making bread, upside-down cake, Sausage and potato soup, and pizza the following day.
Links to recipes and the books I talk about are below:
Challah Bread Recipe: www.forgottenw...
Upside Down Cake recipe: www.forgottenw...
Pizza Crust recipe: www.forgottenw...
Sausage Potato Soup Recipe:
I don't have the sausage and potato soup on the blog, most soups I don't follow a recipe. I will give you the basic outline.
Sausage Potato Soup Outline:
1 pound of sausage browned in a dutch oven or soup pot
1 onion diced and added to meat to brown with it.
4 cups of chicken broth added to the meat mixture
potatoes and carrots peeled and chopped up and parboiled before adding to the soup pot
add in potatoes carrots and some of the water they were cooked in. You have to estimate this with the size of the pot you have. I add a water/cornstarch slurry of 2-3 large tablespoonfuls in a jar with a bit of water, shake vigorously until mixed, and add to the soup pot. At this point, if you have chopped kale add it and let it cook down for a few minutes ( I didn't have any in this video, but I do LOVE to add it ) Finally add two cups of cream or half and half plus whatever spices you would like. I add garlic powder, thyme, red pepper flakes, and salt and pepper. You can let it simmer on low until ready to serve.

Slow living isn’t a trend for me. It's a lifestyle I have embraced for years; I learned it from my mom and grandma. We always just took our time to enjoy the beauty of the everyday. I’m a romantic at heart, with a practical lifestyle approach to “keep it simple.” I grew up on a farm, which furthered my love of simplicity and back to the basics mindset.
We moved six months ago to our cozy cottage, and we are in the process of fixing it up. I strive to make our home cozy and inviting no matter what remodeling stage we are in. Making a home hygge and cozy is just a normal way of life for me, and I can’t imagine it any other way.

I have fallen in love with your channel! I love your way of life. Last year, my husband and I sold our suburban home and built a cabin in the woods near my in-laws and have loved every aspect of it. Slow and intentional life, gardening, family, faith, love, do-it-yourself. Wouldn’t have it any other way. I appreciate your content and am excited for each video. Thank you!

Hi Abby Jo. I found your channel quite by accident, but the title interested me, so I decided to watch. That one hooked me in and I've been watching you all afternoon. I've decided to subscribe. I know you said in many of the videos I watched that it's cold where you are and you get lots of snow. I have lived all my life in Northern Maine, so I know all about thee snow and cold. A lung issue halted my career and way of life about fifteen years ago, and demanded I live on oxygen 24/7. I am 61 years old and have been married to my husband for almost 43 years. It's always been just the two of us. I don't and never did meal prep or make freezer meals, but I love watching you girls on KZbin do it. Your home is beautiful. The videos I watched today were so enjoyable and calming. I hope you're having a great weekend. Take care.

It is the absolute best! I have never had any of my breads, buns or pizza fail using it! Ooh, love the sound of apple/pear upside down cake! My grandmother and auntie would make fantastic pineapple upside cakes using a cast iron skillet. I remember sometimes my grandfather would have to take the skillet out of the oven, because of it being too heavy for her. It did however, make a lovely upside cake. Would love to make different upside recipes, using different fruits!

I have always held the book my grandmother gave me, Good Old Days in the Kitchen by Ken and Janice Tate very close to my heart. They have an entire series of books about life back from the post Civil War days to the 1960's. They are sadly out of print but libraries still carry them and Amazon has several of their titles. Each recipe comes with a story and the pictures and illustrations are beautiful.

Thank you, Abby for replying. I wrote that the 1985 Canadian Anne of Green gables was very entertaining for my kids and I. It had Megan Follows, Colleen Dewhurst, and Richard Farnsworth in it, and my (now deceased) mother-in-law! I highly recommend it! Love your videos!!❤

Hello AbbyJo, I wanted to tell you that the Christmas mugs you were using are from Hartstone pottery in Ohio. Yours are original Hartstone, probably from the 1990s. The company was bought out by another company and they still make pottery, but in my opinion it is not the same. It’s nowhere near as nice. I have many pieces of the original pottery. I’ll post a picture so you can see some. I love all of your videos. You feel like a friend.❤

That braided bread looks absolutely amazing. Books I'm currently reading are "The Weekly Times new Pioneer cookbook " by them. "The pumpkin book "by Jackie French as I'm currently wading through pumpkin everywhere. Haha. A lovely coffee table read by Whitaker house is called " In the garden , plants of the bible " and Jamie Oliver's "15 minute meals" and several slow cooker books. In my road trip bag is Hannah Maloneys "Good life permaculture " which I'm loving. I just finished reading "Futuresteading " by Jad miles, which is incredibly good and next I'm going through "how can I grow and use herbs in my daily life " by Isabell shipard. I didn't realise I had so many on the go. I love that you're reading Grown and Gathered , what a great duo. I have it on my list to borrow and see if I want to purchase. Thank you so much for another wonderful video darlings ❤❤❤

I've been reading Edible & Medicinal Plants Of Canada, by MacKinnon, Kershaw, Arnason, Owen, Karst, & Hammersley-Shaw. While not overly in-depth on each species (or possessed of any actual recipes), it covers nearly every plant native to Canada, along with how it was used by Native Americans and early settlers, and any potential side effects of its use. Once I'm done this book, I have a mushroom book from the same publisher to read (Lone Pine Publishers) that's calling my name from the shelves.

Hello! I just discovered you all yesterday! Been watching many of your videos and loving it! The LORD has blessed me to find you to learn how to be more self sufficient in our home. I am very interested in a Wood cook stove. What brand do you have and do you recommend it or another brand? Any advice would be so appreciated. We have an older cast iron flat top wood burning stove now that we heat our home with. I purchased it used back in 1999 with intent to cook on it if grid went down with Y2K. Have only experimented with cooking on it a few times. Thanks Jeanne Ward from Franklin, Ohio
