I passed my CPC exam!! Just barely though. I took it April 2nd and got my results April 3rd. Now I am searching for a job. Any recommendations for starting out? I’m nervous about what to expect in the real world and if company’s help navigate the EMR. I learned from my books and didn’t do any cases through an online system, just practice cases.

I took my test, first attempt on Sunday and failed. I was very nervous and ran out of time. I see that one of the things you recommend for the code search is looking at the index instead of spending more time reviewing each of the possible answers. Anyone know if the Preppy course has actual good helpful lectures? My friend and I are absolutely BUMMED trying to do the CPC prep course through the local university only to find out their "lectures" are 5-7 minutes long, 10 years old, and leave us more confused than without it, which sucks since books aren't included, CEUs aren't included, exam attempts aren't included, and we receive little to no help from the instructor. We finally got to the coding part of the class with using the guidelines and we are so confused

We went directly to the codes in the multiple choice selections. This is the exam strategy, not real-world lookup strategy so we did not use the alphabetic index.

The test is timed. It is 100 questions and 4 hours and you need a 70% overall to pass.

I am pursuing my program via CareerStep. There are ways to get the "A" taken off our cert, they can be found on the AAPC site. For examples, CareerStep provided a letter to AAPC which counts as 1 year. Then they included the cost of the AAPC Praticode test which is basically takes place of employment experience. It is 600 questions long and you have 18 months to complete it --- I do NOT think it is multiple choice. The letter plus the Praticode test will remove "A" from the certification.

@@florencenguyen5471 It is very hard to find a place that will hire you if you don't have any experience. Regardless of the amount of schooling you do! You will either have to find a place that will allow you to do an externship (non-paid), or you will have to work a position that is not medical coding in order to get a foot in the door.

@@Abbie75 I completed my 1 year through AAPC 's CPC course and had practicode. Practicode allows you to code but doesn't tell you what you got wrong and why. It's just a way to prove your coding skills. If you pass, your A is removed. If you don't pass, doesn't say what and why.

Why use the -52 modifier on one of the code?

The modifier 52 is used to indicate that a service or procedure has been partially reduced or eliminated at the physician's discretion. In the case of the scheduled outpatient hysteroscopy procedure intended for the removal of fibroids, the surgeon decided not to remove a small fibroid due to its proximity to the uterine wall, deeming it too risky. As a result, the planned procedure was partially reduced because the fibroid was not removed. This necessitates the use of the 52 modifier to denote that the procedure was not fully completed as initially intended.
