Well folks, I need your opinion. Artists come to me all the time, knowing we are based near Nashville, TN, and want to do a "session". I've always considered what we do more of a mini music documentary, not a live session like KEXP or Tiny Desk Concert do. We go places, where there is a story, and try to tell a little slice of it. I don't know where to film in Nashville, ever. Ever place in that town is used to the Country music industry coming and paying big dollars to film there. That ain't us, chief!
I do want to film all these artists for y'all though. So, why not turn our tiny office into a more permanent show? Many have seen the aforementioned Tiny Desk series. Some of y'all have probably seen Pete Seeger's famous "Rainbow Quest" show ( • Episode 1 - Rainbow Qu... , back in the 60s. We're taking a bit of inspiration from those and making the VHS HQ live series. AKA people coming and just hanging out with us in the office. It will be fun, it will be beautiful.
This first episode is with Caspian, formerly of Scissorbills, who y'all might remember ( • Scissorbills, "Scissor... ) and his neighbor, Cam, from the Deslondes ( • The Deslondes, "South ... . They're making something special, and I was pumped to record them after seeing them on Punk with a Camera ( • CPNPC - Allison - DIY ... . Their sound was like i'd never heard before. Stripped down, punk as hell, with an eclectic mix of genre, style and instrumentation. I mean come on, the Yamaha VSS 200 synthesizer from the late 1980s? Yes. Anyway, Caspian is slightly unhinged, in the best way, and it shines in his songwriting. Cam blesses anything he touches, adding flavor effortlessly with a deft and steady hand. And yes, that is Kyle Brew making a guest appearance.
So what do y'all think? Do you like this format? We will keep making the sessions out in the world. We're going to focus those more on the documentary style, like we did with the Mary Wallopers in Ireland ( • Exploring Irish folk m... . This seems like a good new format, though.
