What's a guy to do on a Monday off from work? GO CRABBING!
With a super high tide, and rivers in flood stage, we had some really high water at Yaquina Bay in Newport, OR. This made for some unique conditions for catching crab in the dead of winter in January. In this video, I'll show you what gear I use to catch crab, as well as how to set up, bait, and know what you can and can't keep. Not to mention catching my biggest dungeness crab to date!
Tips up, tight lines and have fun fishing!

Super cool. I'll never be able to catch crab. But I enjoyed watching you break it down the way you did. Its ice fishing season here in Saskatchewan. It's been a good year for that so far.

@@TheTroutHammer I have been catching lots of good perch. I'm guessing over 100 8"+ perch. 10 walleye and a few pike. Bought myself the garmin echomap 63cv ice bundle. Has helped me catch a lot more fish. Heading to northern sask in March for lake trout.

i crab here and i use the netted rings, i recommend these over the square traps, and we use a skinned mink as bait and we ziptie it to the bottom of the net, it works wonders! i usually leave the trap at the bottom for about 20 minutes and theres always crabs when i pull up the trap.

I was looking at the netted rings, and just went with these because they came with harnesses, bait bags and rope. Lol, didn't have enough money back then for better crap traps

Here are some tips ive learned from years of crabbing if you get traps especially the ones with netting learn to repair them. Also crabbing by the rogue brewery is a good place to crab. Chicken is the best if you use fish the seals will come(learned the hard way).Brown crab/dungeness are the best. The square traps are good and you can keep on using them but I recommend getting some rings. If you have a heavy duty rod and reel get a crab hawk they are like a gift from god. Also if you are on a budget and can't get a crab bait cage use bait pins they are cheap and good. Also rinse your traps off with clean freshwater. Dont eat crab guts its bad for you. The last thing I recommend is getting a cart/wagon to carry your traps, cooler etc. You must likely don't need a lot of these tips but their might be some people that might find these useful.

All great advice! I actually have a crab hawk setup for this fall/winter, and want to drop in new spots this year. I stick to trout and chicken for bait; I've never had a sea lion try to get my trout

@@TheTroutHammer Yeah I once used fish I had about 6 bait cages when I started and I left with 1 that's how I know about bait pins

Newport usually crab are pretty hard to catch but if you do they are insane in size we've caught some 2-3 pound crab before using chicken legs and breast also you can use some scents I've had good luck with some specific garlic based crab bait scents which you can inject or spray on the bait.

Do yourself a favor and get rid of the cage traps. Get yourself some conical hoopnets and you will catch more crab as the crabs don't have to search for the door entrances and can enter from any direction with the hoopnets. Those cage traps have to big of mesh on the bottom to so you are likely to lose the bigger red rock crabs through the mesh. Those cage traps simply aren't very productive because of those things I've mentioned.
@TheTroutHammer
@TheTroutHammer 5 жыл бұрын
I did look at those, and want to get some. The biggest reason I went with the ones I have was the price at the time

@@TheTroutHammer They are all I use. Whatever you do don't use baitcages with them if you get some. Instead you want to ziptie bait bags in the center (nothing to bend and damage since they are soft). I had baitcages initially and the sea lions mangled them. I was using chicken for bait so I suspect the sea lions were ramming into my baitcages trying to get crabs out of my traps. I had this issue on the dock by the brewery a year or 2 ago. Bait bags solved the issue.
