The test at the end of clearly biased. If you look at the afterburner stats in the UWP vs. Denuvo test, you'll see something the reviewer intentionally left out from mentioning. UWP used roughly 20% less GPU power compared to Denuvo. A rep from Microsoft stated on Twitter last year that they were fully committed to helping fight global warming, as it is an existential threat to the future of our planet and the survival of the human species. Why does this reviewer hate our planet? Anyone can increase power usage to increase performance. But it takes a company truly dedicated to environmental stewardship to lower power usage by lowering performance. The human eye can't see beyond 30fps anyway. Please report video for banning. /s

can u please do a test of at least ac origins with disabling half the cores of 3700x, preferably also disabling smt and lock clockspeed to 4 ghz or sth. this would simulate a decent quadcore and would likely show a difference if the game is cpu bottlenecked like ac origins would be with 4 cores without smt. testing with a simulated quadcore would be HUGELY interesting for the other games too, and i would see this way more important than retesting previous benchmarks with the new hardware. it would also be interesting to lower memory bandwidth/speed alongside to see if denuvo requires quite some higher bandwidth and how it effects the game. either way please do testing with simulated decent or super value hardware. 3700x chips are rare for people to have and people with those are the least effected by the dark evil DRM denuvo :)

You should retest the game at very low graphical settings with reduced resolution. It is very likely that you are GPU bound, thus masking the CPU performance cost of denouvo.

@simon hellberg a better way to test is to massively lower cpu performance, like restricting the cpu 4 cores with SMT disabled and locking it to 3.5 ghz. maybe also lowering memory speed along side it. if denuvo's cpu eating performance is fixed cutting cpu performance to 3/8 or less will be more likely to show the denuvo tax, because the percentage, that denuvo uses of the full cpu is MUCH higher and the game itself will be cpu bottle necked at that point with the 1080ti, that was used in the benchmarks.

They cracked the story first on the laoyffs in Activision Blizzard or ArenaNet. They were the first to cover the toxic work environment in companies like Treyarch or Rockstar. Pirated being better than the paid version happened a long time ago. This is just the latest example. I'd be hoping that the publishers would learn that making better products would be better for them than spending money actively making them worse, but I've learned too much to have that hope. For the time being, I guess the best thing to do would be to double-check which games use which kinds of DRM, and try to support the games and publishers you trust. This could help you discover more kinds of games that you'd enjoy than you would otherwise come across.

IIRC, Overlord Gaming did a video on it, but one of the arguments is that even if the DRM is cracked soon after the game comes out, the publishers still want to use it so that they can protect the early game sales. How effective that really is, I don't know, but it's certainly true that the vast majority of people who buy games don't even consider the DRM, so the presence of DRM sadly probably isn't costing many sales much as it's anti-consumer and makes the game objectively worse. So, from a purely business perspective, if the DRM does actually protect initial sales, then it does make sense why the business folks would insist on using it. Personally, I seriously question that it really protects enough sales to be worth what they pay for it, and as a consumer, I hate it, because it makes the game worse, but the business folks probably won't change their tune unless it can be shown that the combination of the price of the DRM and the lost sales from the DRM is a larger amount of money than the sales they gain from there being no cracked version of the game early on. If gamers in general refused to buy games with DRM, then that would probably do it, but in general, gamers would rather put up with DRM than not get a game, and as long as no cracked version exists, they have to pay if they want it. So, most folks just pay, and as such, it's a lot harder to show game publishers that DRM is a bad idea. Ultimately, they don't care about how it affects the game, just how it affects sales.

It's not really the studio that demands DRM. It is the publisher and its investors, who are (mostly) all old men in their 70s,80s who have absolutely no clue about anything related to technology. These people think it's still the 1970s orsomething and are completely out of touch with reality that people who pirate are not people who want to steal their product, but people who just can not afford it. (thus no sale is lost at all because they wouldn't have bought it in the first place)

I really like these tests, though I do have one suggestion/critque: I think for AC: Origin you should have showed CPU usage. With the claim being that Denuvo + VMP had a drastic increase in CPU usage it would have made sense to show what, if any, effect it was having on your CPU.

Especially the latest Steam update of both the launcher and the site. The laptop I use for internet browsing straight up struggles to switch between tabs in the launcher and gets 100% CPU load on a fucking WEB PAGE of a news article on Steam. I honestly have never seen a web site lag on any laptops I've had. There are entire video games made past 2000 that require less computing power than the new Steam launcher. Ended up uninstalling that trash from all my machines.

When testing stuff like this it would be helpful to record results from a lower-end PC as well. Plenty of people who were totally unable to play the game can play it with Denuvo removed; my 2600k clocked at 5.5 cannot handle the game over 40fps with Denuvo and VMprotect, but easily passes 60 average with these removed. 1070ti for reference.

Yeah not showing CPU usage on a game CPU bound makes little sense. Unless they're running a 2080 we've no idea if they were GPU bound on the benchmark. The 3700x is also an awful CPU to usage for that test no matter what. "Let's see if this helps CPU usage on a relatively powerful and modern CPU". There was never going to be an issue either way.

and how do you think player movement works codewise? It's essentially a cue to move the camera together with an entity rather then it measuring when a key is pressed, it likely checks whether the entity moves (and therefore the camera with it). In a benchmark this entity is likely being moved for you without requiring your interaction (since object rendering is tied to where your entity is at a point in time, or at least should be for systems with a limited amount of RAM).

The built-in benchmarking tools, usually just move the player camera trough the scenes on a predefined path, so it's the same as if a player was moving it, just automated.

Great stuff! There is way less stuttering in the cracked version. Set playback speed to 0.25x, and start watching from 3:52. Keep your eyes on the wall closest to you, in the field. The right hand playback is smooth and stutter free. The playback on the left shows jumps, stutter, and timing difference. If I already bought the game, I would personally apply the crack.

I had a similar problem with Far Cry 5, on my low end i5 2500K i could get 90-100fps(60-80% cpu usage) on the cracked exe but with the steam version i could only get 30-40fps(constant 100% cpu usage).

While I agree with your talking points, I really think you should not compare minimum framerates. It does not relate to how fluid a game runs, because there is no way of telling how often the framerate dips. I suggest you use the lower 1st-percentile instead, as unstable framerates will result in lower values while stable framerates will not - even if there was one giant lagspike at some point. The software you are using to display the framerate ingame even has an option to calculate the 1st- and 0.1th-percentile. Otherwise, great video as always.

I do get an FPS gain with Denuvo removal in Origins. Most intense area was Great Library of Alexandria where I'd drop from 60 to 45 - 47 FPS. Thanks to Codex with this incredible development, it now drops from 60 to 54-55 FPS. Other area's seem to stutter less (not a V-Sync issue, but from loading and performance reasons). 2020 will be a beautiful era hopefully where some games were dropped because of performance issues because of Denuvo and other DRM's. 980 GTX OC I5-6600k OC 16GB 3600.

the problem with your tests is that your not using a game that's limiting your cpu to begin with. I would love to see how a first gen i5 would far with and without Denovo.

@@Nikkivaldheks coming for some one that could not play dmc2 with denovo. yes it matters greatly. it wasn't till i bought it on gog that i changed from barley getting 26 fps to a constant 60 on my phenom 2. the difference on older cps is much easier to see and a lot more impactful them losing 10 fps on a 12 core cpu then a 4 core one where denovo can run on a unused thread where on a 4 core one it has to use the ones the game is useing hurting performance a lot more.

Odyssey was "cracked" (bypass, not removal of Denuvo) from a pretty early version of the game and is missing a lot of the DLC/updates that came out afterwards. There have been no other updates to the game (from a pirates perspective), and the assumption is that once the game is done with all of it's updates and dlc's, a cracked version (hopefully like this one, where its a complete removal) will be released, and we will be able to test performance differences then as well.

Rise is buttery smooth outside of towns for me on an outdated quad core, any performance issues aren't down to Denuvo. Nixxes is also a really competant porting studio and is unlikely to fuck up the DRM implementation.

one of the issues with the benchmark tool is that denuvo and vm protect were constantly pinging during actions like running or fighting. since there is no player input its not trying to get these calls

Consider using no more significant figures in your calculated results than the measured numbers themselves have. Any more digits than that are not accurate. Also, you may want to mention your storage for the games, since loading times seem to be most affected.

i also got 200-300 point improvement in aco benchmark after this crack. it may not sound like much, but it actually makes the game playable by getting rid of constant stutters in lower end cpus like my i3 6100.

I've recently upgraded my PC to Ryzen 3600x with my 1080Ti. I ran a benchmark with this game and it still does show hiccup like in the video. At first I've thought it was because I've installed it on my 4TB HDD that ran at 5200RPM. So I moved it to my NVMe drive and the result were still the same. I am now curious to see if there are similar performance boost to be had in Assassin's creed Odyssey.

Sounds like it's also a way to force upgrades. It would never run like it does on the consoles (even 30fps locked), if the console version required the same CPU load. I own Origins, and this makes me want to download the cracked version. There's no excuse for always connected SP games. The days of "owning" your games is coming to an end. Unplug your internet, and see how many of the modern games you can play. Even offline mode requires a connection first to enter offline mode. Unless you do things outside of normal functionality.

They shouldn't worry about "pirates". How many times have you (when you were a child) downloaded a game, because you (as a child) had no money? And now as a grown up, how many times do you now buy games? Exactly. Normal people buy games they like. They know in order for the studio to make a sequel, they need sales. So you buy the games you want a sequel to. 99% of all pirated games was only played in 10 minutes. Only kids a literally broke people download pirated games. And when broke people get money, they go back and buy the games they pirated. This is how gamers are
