I was an audience member at an X-Factor recording a few years ago. Before the show even got started, they told us to cheer for random things. For example, early on an announcer would list all the months of the year, and audience members had to cheer as loud as possible when their birthday months were mentioned. I'm guessing that footage was later edited to make it look like we were cheering for certain contestants.

Of course, at the time I thought the announcer was just trying to entertain us because the show was taking too long to get started.

What really bothers me in The First 48. Besides getting someone killed in Detroit by encouraging the cops to show off for the cameras, they also consistently edit interrogation videos to add in long pauses to make people sound guilty as hell. It's one thing to doctor someone's singing performance, and something altogether different to fuck with someone facing a murder charge.

@Ziko5777 жыл бұрын
That's one of the reasons I quit watching it. I noticed this even when I was younger and anyone could tell you that some level of editing went on with that show and still is to this day. In fact, the show has even gotten into hot water with showing witnesses' faces, one camerawoman got 2 years probation for lying on the stand about an Detroit officer's involved shooting which killed the suspect in question, a kid was killed in a SWAT raid and that was filmed!, a suspect sued Miami PD for false imprisonment and the episode had a lot of errors that weren't corrected in reruns involving the ensuing investigation as there were a lot of missteps on the cops' part.
@Trump.Musk.Will.Destroy.U.S7 жыл бұрын
So what you're really saying is 48 was actually real compared to these other shows? How would it be possible to get away with murder when it's filmed? The vid never totally gets destroyed if it's online.

It's funny because I learned all of these were fake when I was about 7 years old. When I had to be in the audience of a Song contest like American Idol but I never got to see anyone sing, I just got to see people do different crap and then we had to cheer or boo at specific points. What's hilarious is that one time scene in one song when they film the audience you can see my sister and I being bored out of our minds while the performance is happening.

Can we please talk about how Rupaul's Drag Race and Project Runway routinely use shots of contestants looking to the left or right and edit them to imply that they're reactions to other contestants talking in the workroom? Like... Subtle, but insidious. That stuff can destroy people's entire careers.
@Ziko5777 жыл бұрын
I started taking notice of these practices in recent seasons as it's become more obvious. Even more so with Rupaul's show as the LOGO KZbin channel has the "unseen" footage of the contestants talking while the judges deliberate on the stage. This show like many seems to be made specifically to appeal to the audience as when a new season's on, everyone's Twitter & FB pages light up like Christmas lights and the page is updated during or shortly after the airing. I can only imagine the chaos when this garbage hits VH1 in 2 weeks.

Last night, my boyfriend and I had one of those moments where we were reminded that everything in a reality show is manufactured. Skin Wars, second to last episode of the first season, Shannon (I think) is talking about her mother praying for her to win and the audio editing was so bad, it was incredibly obvious that all those words were spliced together like a Frankenstein's monster of a sentence. The inflection on the last word in the sentence made it clear that if that word were in context in the original sentence it came from, she would have said more afterwards, but the edit just cut her off right there.

You don't even go into probably the most insidious part of basically every reality show. The contract. First there's almost always a willful misrepresentation clause, so that when the show tweaks and edits the footage and dub overs to make you look like an borderline sociopath, you can't sue them for libel. (example: in a reality show where they were looking to cast the lead in a Broadway musical, they made it look like a contestant was bullimic. In reality, she was sick in the bathroom because of food poisoning. This was a professional actress who had trained hard to get a career on the stage. This could have damaged her career because other professional who saw that, could see here as a liability) And the control they have over your life between filming and it airiing on TV is truly terrifying. Worst case scenario. Najai Turpin was a contestant on Boxing competition "The Contender" produced and hosted by Sylvester Stallone. He was eliminated early, but their contract stated that until the show was picked up and aired, he couldn't do any boxing (cause it would spoil the shows finale). It was months before the show was picked up by a network, and by then he had committed suicide out of the combined stress of not being able to do his freaking job, and marital struggles. He's not the only one either.

On one episode of Kitchen Nightmares, they went to a restaurant called Finn McCool's, owned by a retired cop whose son auditioned for Hell's Kitchen and, while they liked him, they didn't think he was the right fit for HK, so they had him on KN. There's one scene where one of the line chefs drops a piece of chicken on the floor and then plops it back into the deep fryer. That guy was not an employee of the restaurant, but put there by the production company, because Finn McCool's turned out to be an already fairly competently run restaurant.

One of my cousins was on swamp people until he ended up getting kicked off for indecent behavior. Alligator hunting has been a way of life for my people for a very long time. We know what we're doing, we know how to kill alligators as quickly and painlessly as possible. But on the show they make every kill seem like this huge struggle where you have to wrestle with the alligator. If you know what you're doing, alligator hunting is actually pretty simple. No more dangerous than hunting any other animal.

The US is still involved in all the same countries it was during the Obama administration, and Trump has actually ramped up the drone wars, which were already terrible under Obama. Also, getting rid of the Nuclear Deal was a disaster, and the only reason why the Trump administration did it was to escalate with Iran, since the neocons have been trying to topple that government for decades now. Not saying Hillary was any better since I believe she was probably slightly worse overall. But Trump has turned out to be just another puppet of the deep state like the rest of them. Do these guys just take the best performing articles and then decide which ones get made into videos? I'm pretty sure I've read a cracked article about this.
@awkward.anonymous7 жыл бұрын
Cracked has definitely talked about House Hunters being fake in another video, I'm not sure about the other stuff though. Personally I just view these and the text-based videos as filler that keeps the channel active between their more production-heavy shows.

I feel like they've talked about the Apprentice, too, in another video.
@Azivegu7 жыл бұрын
well the speed of which an article can be made is only a fraction of that which goes into making a video. For an article you need one person and an internet connection. For the videos you need a team of camera operators, sound technicians, editors, scriptwriters, actors, makeup artists, plus all the equipment and software (not cheap). So they could invest more into starting story lines that aren't based off of articles they have written and have a good chance that multiple scripts will flop after countless hours of research and writing, or they can build upon the premise of an article they know people are interested in and have a portion of the script already laid out for them. If you ask me, that's a pretty sound business decision to my ears.

Only the one? Usually there are at least 5 other article about the same subject. Or covers the same details partially etc. I don't ind though, there usually is at least one piece of new information and repitition helps me remember the events.

No i aint talking shit, now. lol. its a good idea. I just vaguely remember a cracked article where they talk about how like, reality shows without background music and sound effects are totally different, and a bunch of other stuff about how they script and re-take scenes and stuff... was it a John Cheese article? John Cheese is the greatest. lol

We recently had an American idol audition come by Oklahoma and after hearing from a few friends that tried out I learned that they’re looking more for sad stories and talent. Not just talent

House Hunters makes sense though because buying a house takes longer than then 3 days and it would cost too much money to film in houses still on the market with people who may end up getting rejected by the bank. That's why all HGTV shows require you to be in escrow first. The friend thing is ludicrous. House Hunter International is cool even if it's fake decision because learning about the housing market in Lisbon or whatever is still real.

CNN, FOX, MSNBC, all have their own ideological spin on things. It's only been more apparent to some recently about CNN. There isn't a credible new channel left on television.

It's always been that, it's just more spoken/noticeable about now because of 24 hour news. Ben Franklin used his news papers for personal political goals. Also to make marijuana illegal so hemp wouldn't cut into his paper and cotton businesses.

Ok, well, Bill Nye really did revive his media career by appearing on DWTS... that and his Ken Hamm debate around the same time lead to him building a big social media following, doing interviews, and finally getting his own show(s) again. It's actually pretty cool.

My mom actually got asked to be on version of house hunters after we bought our house. My mom said no to it because she didn't want people knowing what our house looks like and where it is. After that we knew it was all fake. She still watches it a lot. Now when I pass by it's " Which house is theirs" instead of " which house should they pick"

My family and i went to a taping of the Maury Show about 2 years ago. there was a dude in front that told us how to react and to certain things and when. He said that no matter how you actually feel, just follow the crowd. one or two of the "guests" for that episode actually ended up taking the bus back home with us. Least the pizza was endless and yummy and we got free t-shirts
@ShadowWingTronix7 жыл бұрын
At least when the home improvement shows do that you actually get something of worth out of it watching the chosen house be updated. Sure, they probably remove the decorations (or at least the ones not specifically created for them), but you're bringing in your own anyway. the audience gets to see the house being built and maybe get some tips for their own homes.

If you're really interested in how shows do this sort of thing, look up series 4 episode 6 of Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe where he holds a mock show of the Apprentice called The Unloser to show editing and production tricks used in reality shows. If you need any persuading, this is the guy who created and is the writer for Black Mirror!

Survivor only uses stunt doubles for challenges during the aerial shots because its pretty easy to see the camera crew when you’re shooting in the middle of the jungle.
