Your video inspired me, a total rookie, to make over a dozen of these rings so far using the same tools you did. A few key takeaways for those following the video's instructions: 1) Keep your blade sharp!! If your blade is even the slightest bit dull, you are likely to shatter the ring core as you shave down the surface area or final width. (Ask me how I know - ha ha :) In my experience, you need to sharpen your tools at least once during the process of making one ring. And if you have one of the carbide tip "easy tools" like I do, rotate the tip after only a couple rings. They don't stay sharp very long. **Best advice: Get a small bench grinder for about $65 at Home Depot or Lowes. You're gonna need it. 2) For final finishing, I suggest a few layers of the green bottle epoxy instead of the pink bottle of stain that Mike uses. If you use that pink bottle, the ring will soon break down and fall apart after getting it wet a few times. Add a layer of epoxy, spray it with accelerator, sand lightly with 400 grit, and repeat 3-4 times. It'll look just as nice and be much more rugged. 4) One of the wood blanks Craft Supplies USA sells is called Ironwood. It's tough to cut and will dull your blades even faster. If you order wooden blanks, call their office and ask the customer service rep for softer wood cores, at least to start. 5) If you order the acrylic blanks to make a ring (not shown in this video but available from Craft Supplies USA), be prepared for a really bad smelling process. Those acrylic cores make a stringy mess and smell terrible as you turn them. 6) When you're hollowing out the core to size, press gently. With a little practice you'll feel the cutting tool reach the double-sided tape. 7) You may find your ring core hole gets narrower as you bore toward the waste block. That's OK! Instead of boring the whole core at once, switch back and forth between boring the center hole and scraping back the front surface of the wooden block. All in all this is a really fun project that anyone can do. I had ZERO experience and am finding it to get easier with every ring. You can do this!

It is. You should take a beginners class first. Then get a small lathe, and get carbide tools unless you have taken a sharpening class. When shopping for a lathe keep in mind tools are $60-$80 each, and you'll need at least a round and square tip one.

I've made a couple , but I find it rather difficult to use the skew and open the hole up to accept the ring. It's very difficult to cut straight in. You should offer drill bits that are exact size of the OD of the ring for a good fit.

I have a question.. I’ve turned about 50 rings, some wood some acrylics.. I am finding the acrylics are eventually sliding off the core.. I sanded the cores beforehand for better glue adhering and once turned I polished. Wood ones I do 14 coats of CA glue, but should I also be doing that with acrylics?
@CraftSuppliesUSA
@CraftSuppliesUSA Жыл бұрын
It might be worth switching to a different type of adhesive for the acrylics. I'd recommend G-Flex Epoxy, that is the best adhesive I've found for rings. -Mike

Trying your method but when drilling the initial hole my tape always breaks free of the waste block, just as the bit is leaving the backside of the blank. I am using a quality double-sided tape, I am using a brad point bit and it seems maybe this is causing the issue? Any suggestions....
@CraftSuppliesUSA
@CraftSuppliesUSA 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Mark, I would recommend increasing your drilling speed and try using a standard twist bit instead of a brad point. Also, make sure the surfaces are dust free before applying the tape. If you're still having issues, give us a call at 1-800-551-8876 and ask for Mike. Thanks.

When I make rings, I use those small, square, double sided foam like pads used for hanging. 3m makes them. They don’t come off unless you want them too, pretty much precut to the size I need, and aren’t expensive. Works great.
6 жыл бұрын
good video, but not as easy as he makes it look. even for a seasoned turner. very important to have a very small scraper for the core sizing. you don't want to cut into your waste block otherwise your core will sit too low when you insert it and you'll discover your blank will end up too narrow for the core once you remove it. also very important that when using your scraper your, blade remain parallel to the spindle otherwise your core will end up too big on one side. it's slow going sneaking up on the coring so if anyone has any tricks on how to keep the scraper parallel (other than eye-balling) please advise. until then, patience is your best ally.

Everytime I used the insta bond activator after putting thin ca glue on it for a finsh it would make it not shinny and have cloudy patches this is my first time using ca glue as a finish. I have no clue what I'm doing wrong? And how would friction polish work with a ring? Would it not hold up as well as ca glue? Thank you
@CraftSuppliesUSA
@CraftSuppliesUSA 6 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you're holding the activator too close while spraying. Hold the can about 12 to 18 inches away from the piece or it drys too fast and clouds. Friction polish will work, but it is not as durable as the CA finish in the long run.

I've made a handful of rings as gifts and sold a couple others and have learned that showering with the rings will ruin the finish and possibly separate the wood from the metal so of course I tell people to not to wear them in the shower. However, my mom is sort of my guinea pig and she recently had part of the wood break and fall off despite not wearing it in the shower. She does wear it while she works which I can see causing the breaks but I use medium thick CA glue for bonding the wood to the core after scuffing up the outside of the core. I would expect the wood to crack with enough force but not really separate from the core so easily. This has happened to her lacewood/titanium ring twice. Does anyone know if medium thick ca glue just doesn't bond well with titanium? Could I be making the fit between the wood/metal too tight? Is there some other explanation or something I can do to prevent this?

Titanium will expand and contract more than the ceramic or stainless steel rings. I'd recommend you try using West systems epoxy called "G-flex". I haven't had a ring fail since switching.

I tried turning my first ring. I mounted the blank, turned it round then drilled the hole. When the drill went into the waste block the blank came off. I'm worried that the mounting it withered tape again won't hold ig while I carve out the center for the core. Any suggestions?
