Would love some videos and tools to make these with a mini lathe
@CraftSuppliesUSA3 жыл бұрын
That's a great suggestion! In the meantime - turning on a mini lathe wouldn't change anything. Both a full-size and mini have plenty of power to turn a ring, and none of the tools would change.

Use a forstner bit that's close to the rings diameter, then finish it off with a scraper.
5 жыл бұрын
Rockler sells the best set of forstner bits in 1/16" increments. Comes with a nice case too. Get as close as you can with your bit then sneak up on the correct diameter. I don't know about you, but I use the solid cores and it's critical that the hole is an exact fit to the core on both sides otherwise it looks very sloppy. I've went beyond the correct diameter more times than I can count. It's just so time consuming I have to price the rings accordingly. I hope they sell.

is there a trick to get the ring cores apart
@edwinleach74015 жыл бұрын
I have purchased some of these rings. A plan of mine is to cut a groove in center of wood and glue in some opal chips and then finish off as usual. Has anyone done this with this ring? Thanks for videos. They are well done.

Hi Mike. How come you don't use CA glue on this type of rings? Wouldn't that compromise the durability of the wood and the shine?
5 жыл бұрын
I was wondering why he used the two part epoxy this time when he used CA on the solid core rings. I'd ask but I probably wouldn't get a replay as well.
@leonhardtz55 жыл бұрын
He actually sort of answered this on another comment. They wanted to keep the natural satin of the wood, so they just used polish. They said, "If you want a durable finish, we recommend applying a CA finish." So I guess just aesthetics.

Hi, I’m making one of these rings and I have a question. When I glued the blank into the ring, some of the glue seeped on the inside of the ring. So I wiped it, but there is still some remaining. How do I get rid of this glue. Thanks, Peter
@MCarberry895 жыл бұрын
What do you suggest on removing the epoxy if the two ring cores dont fit together properly? I glued my up did what you suggested with a mallet and it separated a bit so now there is a good size gap.
@CraftSuppliesUSA5 жыл бұрын
As far as the ring goes you'll need to turn the wood off the 2 piece ring, then a set of snap ring pliers will usually pull them apart.
@CraftSuppliesUSA5 жыл бұрын
If that doesn't answer your question well enough, please call us at 1-800-551-8876 and ask for Mike.

Are there other options for mounting the Ring mandrel other than a collet chuck?
@CraftSuppliesUSA3 жыл бұрын
It's got a 1/2" shaft, so the only real options are a collet chuck or a drill chuck. We recommend collect chucks - they are more secure and run more true.

How durable is the finish you applied?
@CraftSuppliesUSA5 жыл бұрын
We only used scratch free and plastic polish to polish the Desert Ironwood, leaving the wood unfinished for a satin look. If you want a durable finish, we recommend applying a CA finish.

You really shouldn't have your hands near the spinning chuck while gripping something. If it catches and sucks trhat polishing rag into the bore, your finger is going with it. Instead, use a small stick with the polishing cloth attached to one end. If you're careful it shouldnt be a problem, but how do I explain to my wife that she's the only one who gets a ring because It interferes with my new prosthetic fingers.
