Then it landed on my finger and I fell off my bed screaming. I went to the bathroom bc I was scared and I was shaking and crying and I felt sick and tired. Then the power turned back on, I went into my room and after reading loads of stuff ab how they’re harmless, I was ok with it chilling on the wall far away from me. I once found one rolling on the ground because it was tangled up in spider silk and some kind of fluffy moss. I carefully extracted it, didn't break any legs or wings, and when it was free to fly off, it circled around my head three times and left. I honestly think it was grateful and thanking me in its simplistic bug ways, and that experience left me with the notion that insects are more cognizant than we give them credit for.

@Trey Stephens something about flies, they’re just so gross. that sentence was subjective, but another reason is that they’re so dumb. They get into the house like magic but all of a sudden, they can’t find an exit. Buzz buzz buzz everywhere, had one land on me 4 times. oh yeah eating rotten flesh is disgusting but appreciated.

I swat first ask questions later, Until male mosquitos start wearing pants and lady mosquitos wear skirts im not checking whether i should swat. Hell any insect that lands on me besides a bee is likely to get swatted. Also there are tons of species of mosquitos most dont bite. Again im still not checking first. You gotta bee (pun intended) pretty obvious you are not a stinging insect for me not to react outta nature. I was only five when i was in a hornets nest. It took years for me not to swat at bees even.

I've heard that it's actually not a good idea to release cellar spiders outside--they evolved to live in caves, and being sent outside can actually harm or kill them, due to the extreme shift in humidity and temperature. A good alternative would be to find a nice dark hollow place to put them, like a garage or a tool shed.

I am fan of crane flies -- they are clumsy fliers and if they get stuck in my house, I let them be or if possible, try to usher them out so they're not prey for my cat. I learned about crane flies when I was a kid because I was visiting a family member and a really big crane fly got inside the house. I opened the door and it came flying straight at me. The next day I went to the park district and asked if they could identify an insect that I described as looking like "a daddy long legs with wings."

I must be the odd man out because I love crane flies. I only saw them for the first time in my apartment I think three years ago. It was during the spring in Tucson and I saw one fly near the clip-on lamp by my computer. It was soon joined by several more and made for an enchanting sight. Their flight seemed magical although I can't remember why. I do remember seeing quite a few hanging around the lamp, then suddenly I couldn't see any until I looked up at the ceiling and found it covered with them. I had a really good time admiring them until, one by one, they left until there were none left. I have enjoyed them since but nowhere near as many as that wonderful spring.

In south Texas, these little critters are everywhere. Since the 80s, I've always called them mosquito hawks. I was always perplexed at this name as they don't appear at all predatory. They're so delicate, I just couldn't imagine them attacking anything. Today, I finally learned what they are actually called. "Crane Flies". Hmm, makes sense. I've handled more than I can count. I've encountered small swarms of them. Not once have I been bitten, stung or even scratched. They're just too delicate. I've entertained quite a few cats, dogs and lizards with these unique creatures. You can always find a few hovering around an outdoor light fixture in the summertime. Our geckos and anoles are quick to make an easy meal from them. Watching them fly looks like an exercise in chaos. Those long legs throw them off balance very easily. You NEVER see one flying in a straight line. It looks more like dancing. When they perch on something, they spread their legs out in a very symmetrical pattern, likely to keep from being blown away by the wind. If you manage to catch one without breaking one of it's fragile legs or delicate wings and set it free, you've earned some serious karma points in my opinion.

They are very common here in the UK in late summer, and most people call them “Daddy Long legs” completely harmless their larvae is called “leather jacket “ and when they emerge as a fly, there only purpose is to mate, they fall prey to many insects, spiders and birds, so they are a very important food source in the ecosystem, when I was a kid I used to catch them and feed them to my pet gerbils, it brings out their wild instincts, drop a crane fly into the gerbil cage and the second the gerbil hears it flying they go so fast to catch it, a lot of fun to watch.
