It was during the spring in Tucson and I saw one fly near the clip-on lamp by my computer. It was soon joined by several more and made for an enchanting sight. Their flight seemed magical although I can't remember why. I do remember seeing quite a few hanging around the lamp, then suddenly I couldn't see any until I looked up at the ceiling and found it covered with them. I had a really good time admiring them until, one by one, they left until there were none left. I have enjoyed them since but nowhere near as many as that wonderful spring.

In south Texas, these little critters are everywhere. Since the 80s, I've always called them mosquito hawks. I was always perplexed at this name as they don't appear at all predatory. They're so delicate, I just couldn't imagine them attacking anything. Today, I finally learned what they are actually called. "Crane Flies". Hmm, makes sense. I've handled more than I can count. I've encountered small swarms of them. Not once have I been bitten, stung or even scratched. They're just too delicate. I've entertained quite a few cats, dogs and lizards with these unique creatures. You can always find a few hovering around an outdoor light fixture in the summertime. Our geckos and anoles are quick to make an easy meal from them. Watching them fly looks like an exercise in chaos. Those long legs throw them off balance very easily. You NEVER see one flying in a straight line. It looks more like dancing. When they perch on something, they spread their legs out in a very symmetrical pattern, likely to keep from being blown away by the wind. If you manage to catch one without breaking one of it's fragile legs or delicate wings and set it free, you've earned some serious karma points in my opinion.

I was peacefully watching GeorgeNotFounds stream and then one of these showed up and I thought “It looks like a spider or a moth or a wasp combined” and a second one came in and thunder went on so I screamed a little and ran in my living room like “I am not dealing with this 3 in the morning”
@AdawaShiwani3 жыл бұрын
Similar story happened with me where 2 of them probably mating came into my room. I thought they were mosquitos coming for me so I ran downstairs and hopped they'd be gone by the morning which they were.

In the UK we call em daddy long legs, we also have the daddy long legs spider. The spider no one knows the name of it, so just gets called 'that one with the fat body and the long legs'.

Thank you for this. So many humans needlessly kill innocent insects and other arthropods out of ignorance, fearful of genuine harm from those capable of harming us via deseases or venom. As a Vegan, I struggle sometimes, but try to always err on the side of caution, for the critters.
@wilkywilky78143 жыл бұрын
They are very common here in the UK in late summer, and most people call them “Daddy Long legs” completely harmless their larvae is called “leather jacket “ and when they emerge as a fly, there only purpose is to mate, they fall prey to many insects, spiders and birds, so they are a very important food source in the ecosystem, when I was a kid I used to catch them and feed them to my pet gerbils, it brings out their wild instincts, drop a crane fly into the gerbil cage and the second the gerbil hears it flying they go so fast to catch it, a lot of fun to watch.
