There's also one other improvement. You are automatically equipped with a mask when you brake the box and don't have to actually pick it up. Great video series btw.

The jetpack levels were one of the first few levels made.

I laughed when the video started because I thought it was a matthewmatosis parody video

Same. I have to wonder if he took inspiration from matthewmatosis, or if it's simply a coincidence. Nothing wrong with it if he _did_ take inspiration from matthewmatosis, though.

Such a massive improvement over the first game. Between Cortex Strikes Back and Warped, though, I was never sure which one I liked more.

The first Crash Bandicoot didnt entirely keep 2D and 3D separate. There's the Temple Ruins, Jaws of Darkness, and Generator Room which combines the two in the same levels.

I think one of the most important things regarding this game is something you've missed. You actually DO have to master all of Crash's controls in order to beat the game properly. That is, to collect the Gems alongside the crystals. The branching paths are designed in a way that you have to choose to explore the game in ways that disregard the core mechanics in order to find secret paths and to break all of the boxes in a level, which is an important goal very visibly telegraphed to you at the end of each level. Then of course as you collect the coloured gems, it unlocks branching paths in levels you've already completed, in in order to collect more gems. Each level shows you at the top how many crystals and gems there are. I think taking this into account, it could be used as an argument against some of your analysis regarding level design and controls. Because if you don't do these things, It's like beating a classic Sonic game without collecting the Chaos Emeralds.

I think the developers knew, that jetpack levels would be not very fun in terms of gameplay, So they tried to cover it with absolutely gorgerous setting and music. Honestly, when I first played this level, I was so excited by all those beauty, so I didn't even cared about controls.

Would have been worth mentioning the challenge of breaking all the boxes in the level to collect a gem

I preferred the linear progression of Crash 1. Open warp rooms consisting of equally difficult levels just made progression feel less intuitive and slower.

Because my first gaming experience was with the dpad, I played (and beat) this game with it. Analog felt unnatural to me at the time. Especially when the camera shifted to 2D.

It is funny that you say the jet pack thing was messy, I felt it to be great and any clumsy action was because well, it was fucking space. I really loved the final level XD

Forks in the road are not padding. The levels are designed to be backtrack and collect every crate. Also this wasn't introduced in Crash 2, but in Crash 1 (see Cortex Power), a game you already reviewed but never mentioned this aspect. Collecting all the gems is when you clear the game, not the power crystals. You have to remember these games were aimed at young children, so for them collecting the crystals was enough and never asked too much from them. However for people over 12 years of age, the gems were the true way of completion, which is the game's focus alongside platforming, which is another thing you failed to bring up in the previous review.

If the camera was flipped in this sections, then it would be okay, but having to backtrack against camera is just bad design, and Crash 2 is the game in the trilogy that most abuses of this.

Am I the only one here that has a problem with the fact that the game changes the rules on a whim, at times having you backtrack for some gems, and on some deaths, making you have to restart the ENTIRE level for another shot at the gem if you die? Problems that show up more late game, when the levels are annoying enough already when you AREN'T worrying about the gems and having to start all over on every death, lest the skull platform disappear. Seriously, am I the only one here that sees this as a problem?

The Crash games are short and fairly mechanically simple, so the scripts are only a few pages long and the videos don't take too much time to edit together. I'd imagine things will get longer and more complicated once I get to Jak and Uncharted.
