Technology is the problem. Pilots trust it to much. Both 737 Max crashes were avoidable if the pilots had resorted to 100% hand flying.
@Hartbreak1
@Hartbreak1 3 жыл бұрын
@@johnbaskett2309 the thing with the Max is that at least on the first crash the pilots didn’t even know that the technology was there. They thought they were manually flying the aircraft but the hidden automation betrayed them. On the second crash even though the pilots disabled the automation the aircraft didn’t respond how they expected at first so they erroneously enabled it again thinking the issue was somewhere else.

the crews expectations were based on a falsehood
@wilsjane
@wilsjane 3 жыл бұрын
@@Hartbreak1 The problem was that the pilots involved in the crashes did not realise that the automation reengaged after 30 seconds. The switch to permanently disengage it was under the pilot seat and they had not even been told of it's existence. It was the largest error made by aircraft designers in modern aviation, particularly since the additional automation was neither failproof, triplicated on input data or well designed.

As a 31 year retired firefighter and a guy who spent 5 years in airport crash rescue, I can testify that fighting a burning downed aircraft fire is a very difficult animal. Tight spaces, extremely high heat factors make it like working inside of shoe box with flames moving overhead too and fro. Narrow spacing while wearing turnout gear and breathing apparatus is just an extraordinarily difficult task and I have done my share (26 years) of structural firefighting before moving into ARFF. When the chips are down, a firefighter such as this man, a man who put it all on the line, becomes your last possible chance of survival! Job well done Brother ❤️ R.I.P.

Retired airline pilot here, I never flew the triple, but on EVERY part 121 aircraft I flew, there was a tailwind landing limit of 10 knots on EVERY one. Okay did some research...the max tailwind for landing on the -200 is10 knots and the max for the -300 is 15 knots...these numbers are for an autoland....couldn't find the numbers for a manual landing. My point is the Captain should have started a G/O when the FO reported the tailwind exceeded 16 knots!

This is yet another case of pilots relying totally on automation that did not do the job. I have always trained pilots, in the event of a go-around, and when dangerously close to the ground, NOT to use the autos like TOGA. In a go around, you increase power ( manually) raise the nose about 10 degrees, and call for go around flaps. Manually this will work EVERY time. It is incredible that the captain left the auto-throttle to do the work for him. Even when using automatics your hand should be on the throttles and the the control yoke in case of a problem. Sometimes, when making an approach on automatic systems, windshear can cause a sudden increase in airspeed. To counter this, the auto throttles will retard and leave you with fully retarded throttles close to the ground with that windshear suddenly leaving you --and you drop out of the sky! With your hand on the throttles you can override the retard and not lose power at a critical stage. MANUAL go-arounds are safest --and the autos can be engaged when at a safe height.

Why do the pilots totally rely on automation, even a layman would have some common sense, to not leave the throttle , at least in such critical case when there's a go around, having wind issues etc.. when things are fluctuating.. why are they relying on automated in such trivial cases, endangering and risking lives of all on board..such a pilot or captain is called nothing..he shouldn't be called captain or pilot at all, shame on him really..he let his training go in vain.. no use for his training.. what is he being paid for if all the work automated system has to do.. he risked precious lives of 300 innocent people just due to his laziness...that's not what automated system is for..Sorry for the poor firefighter his blood is on this pilot's hand as well who let such happen by relying on automated systems.. This is so insanely ridiculous, such an amateur and unprofessional behaviour of the trained and skillful pilot? . May God Almighty Allah protect all from such ignorant pilots and people.. May God Almighty Allah keep all people in His Ultimate protection always Ameen..

Allah won't help you, you have to help yourself.There is nothing wrong with using automatics, but you are required to keep your hands on the thrust levers as the power comes up in a goaround, it's just common sense.I had an auto throttle fail once in a low level G.A.but my hands stopped it from retarding near the ground

Sounds to me like a classic example of trying to make things easier with too much technology that only makes things more complicated. Why do pilots have to rely on auto throttles and go-around buttons? If you have to go around, push the throttle forward and pull the stick back. What's so hard about that? The plane isn't supposed to fly itself; that's why the pilot is there.

Despite their role in crashing the aircraft, kudos to the flight crew for standing their ground until everyone was evacuated - commendable and honourable. There was a collision between two planes over Centennial, CO airport just yesterday (May 12th). One aircraft deployed a parachute and landed in a nearby park. Both aircraft were attempting to land on parallel runways; however, one swung out too wide, despite orders from the tower, and collided with the other. It would be interesting if you can analyze this crash.

In my opinion the bad design of the TO/GA switches is a major contributing factor. Why do they become inhibited when touching down? You can always perform a go-around before selecting reverse thrust (according to Mentour Pilot at least), and in high stress situations you will not think about if your plane touched down or not, you just want to perform a go-around
@seeingeyegod
@seeingeyegod 3 жыл бұрын
I guess it's to just prevent the plane from accelerating out of control if it was say, in the middle of taxiing and the button was pressed. Still you'd think it wouldn't fully deactivate until all the weight was on the wheels, or not until the speed fell below 60kts or something that would be faster than anyone would taxi and also too slow for a TOGA.

I did my three Captain IOE (initial Operating Experience) flights in a 300. A minimum of 25 hours with a check airman as your FO is required before you can operate as Pilot in Command. This occurs after all simulator training is completed, and you have past your check ride and received your type rating. Regardless of whether the auto pilot is disconnected or left engaged, if the auto throttles are engaged they will respond to the TOGA command. BUT, if wheel spin up is sensed, three seconds later the TOGA function is deactivated. This is not unique to the 777, it’s the same way all TOGA systems operate on all Boeing aircraft. I can’t speak about Airbus aircraft as I have never flown any, but I’m guessing they function in essentially the same way. Being aware of this obviously is critical. But even if he “forgot”, he still should have felt that the throttles did not advance when he hit the TOGA button on the throttle handle. Unless, he removed his hand immediately after engaging TOGA(?), which of course should never be done. Your hand should not be removed until turning off the runway. I’m speculating he removed his hand immediately after selecting TOGA and never realized the throttles did not advance. Nor did his FO monitor the GA as he should have. Confirming throttle movement and N1spool up, or in this case, EPR(Engine Pressure Ratio) increase, are the first things the monitor pilot is required to confirm. Also, their GA briefing was completely inadequate. The go around is the most “dangerous normal” procedure a pilot will perform. Not because it in itself it is dangerous, but for three reasons. 1) It is fairly complicated. Things must be done in their proper order. 2) It is not a procedure that any one pilot will do often in actual operations, but it’s guaranteed, every pilot will perform several throughout his/her career. And 3, because the need to go around can come up suddenly and unexpectedly. In my 33 year career flying airliners I have performed 5 go arounds, one totally unexpected. About ten years ago, when I was a Captain on the 737, I was coming in to IAH on a beautiful no wind day. Just as we heard the ten foot call three coyotes came walking out, about halfway way down the runway, onto the runway. This is why EVERY approach briefing, conducted by the flying pilot, must include a detailed, step by step briefing of the GA procedure, including the monitoring pilots responsibilities. Just briefing the flap setting is as useless as no briefing at all. Having to do a go around is ALWAYS a possibility, even under the best conditions. And when you find yourself in conditions that make a go around much more likely, your mindset needs to be, “I expect to have to go around”, and be prepared to perform it. Obviously these guys were not, unfortunately.
