I think the wildest thing about the entire Inspector Gadget franchise is that it's sort of a spin off of Lupin III. Way I heard it, DIC wanted to do a Lupin VII series set in the future, and there was going to be a cybernetic Zenigata to chase Lupin's descendent. That show was scrapped, but they kept cyber-Zenigata and made Gadget.

Inspector Gadget works because it strikes the perfect balance of taking itself seriously while also being a wonderfully comedic farce. It's too easy to swing one way or the other when writing. People lean into extremes, making a complete joke that has such little substance there's nothing to care about, or something so deep and serious that there's no room for joy and optimism to fit in. The contrast of confidence and (in)competance in the good inspector make for something genuinely endearing, in both the cartoon and it's star.

And some trivia for you in regards to the cartoon. In the original pilot Gadget had a mustache but it was removed due to him looking too similar to Inspector Clouseau. Also Inspector Gadget was orignally voiced by Gary Owens and Jesse White and yes Frank Welker before finally settling for Don Adams for the series. Also in the original pilot Brain and Gadgets roles were reversed. Meaning Gadget was smart and had more wits and Brain was the one messing things up LOL! This would change after the pilot. Both movies fail, but they fail for different reasons. "Inspector Gadget 1999" failed because it was very appearant that it was made by people who heard of the cartoon, heard the theme song, were given like one of two vauge notes about its premise, but never sat down to watch at least 20 or so episodes to get a general understanding of how the source material fundamentally worked. "Inspector Gadget 2" I feel was already at a massive disadvantage because it gives the impression that it was made by people who actually were fans of the cartoon, wanted to make a more faithful adaptation, but because the first film made somewhat of a profit, Disney executives were breathing down the producers necks and forcing them to bring in elements from the first movie that they KNEW people didn't like, making IG2 seem at odds with itself. What I think "Inspector Gadget" needs now more than ever, is a new ANIMATED theatrical outing in the same vane as last years "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" where its a FAR more faithful adaptation. Just dear god get someone other than Chris Pratt for the role as Gadget. And get Frank Welker back as Dr. Claw.

One part of it was used for the teaser trailer they made for the film, and the second was for only the dvd menu itself. People have managed to create fanmade full versions of the song by stitching the audio clips together but the songs ending isn’t fully done… so it’s a huge shame that objectively the best version of the inspector gadget theme song will never be fully complete.😭

With the Mask adaptation, New Line Cinemas were looking for a way to get another "Nightmare on Elm Street" series on their hands since the comics featured everything that was popular about it: a wisecracking killer that uses magic/reality-warping to enact violence and horror. They even hired, Chuck Russell, who directed one of Nightmare's most popular sequels for the project. With Russell, however, he knew what was going on behind the scenes and wanted to go in a different direction. So he amped up the comedy and cartoonish elements of the project, while downplaying the horror and sociopathic elements of the title character. And the Mask became a hit.
@BMask8 ай бұрын
I'm always struck by how sad it is that there are two commentaries for the dvd- one from 1996, where Russell is full of life and enthusiastic about his plans to make the sequel a full on musical, and one from more recent to the new DVD's release, where he knows that dream is dead.

@@BMask Yeah, Mask 2 entered development hell just as Jim Carrey instituted his "No Sequels" rule after the poor experience/reception he had with Ace Ventura 2 (which is laughable now given we have a direct sequel to Dumb and Dumber and two Sonic sequels). And the fruit of that development hell cycle is. . . Son of the Mask. I was just pointing out the irony that Chuck Russell was hired with the expressed purpose by the execs to create a franchise clone. And he created a hit by mixing up the source material to make something that's in everyway the execs didn't want. And the movie has colored audiences' perceptions of the franchise so well that a straightforward reboot/remake is next to impossible.

This is why you're one of my favorite youtube. You talk about your childhood favorites, no matter how obscure or niche, with full sincerity and introspection when a lesser reviewer would trash it for its faults and move on to the next thing to criticize.

I'm so glad you created this because I've always loved part 2 since it's way more like the cartoon.

Personally, I actually like the first Inspector Gadget movie. Yes, it definitely wasn't a good adaptation of the Inspector Gadget cartoon, and the second movie was definitely better, but I still like watching it. Speaking of Disney's version of Inspector Gadget, I would love to see Disney's version of Gadget and the other characters come back in modern media in some way. Like maybe for an "As Told by Disney Emojis" short or an appearance in modern Disney games, like Disney Emoji Blitz or Disney Heroes: Battle Mode. Disney has the rights to those versions of the characters, so why not?

Every kid has that one VHS or DVD that for whatever reason they watch over & over again Inspector Gadget 2 was mine, I still remember watching it every night for about a month straight

Also if I remember correctly this was one of the first cartoons that had contract work over in Japan? I remember hearing TMS worked on the original show.

I think that very well may be the case- they were actually going to make a Lupin cartoon, but were told they couldn't and ended up creating a whole new IP (which explains a couple similar vibes...)
I also loved this movie so much when I was a kid! I rewatched it enough times to quote it growing up. I also enjoyed that it has a music video for "Rose Falcon - Up, Up, Up" such a happy sounding song c: Great video! I loved your editing haha

I forgot almost all about this movie until the very last frame with the "You're going to have to grease my paw" bit, made me lose it.

The true best Inspector Gadget interpretation is the one in Scoob and Shag

Gadget 2 wouldn't have been as good, if the relationship between Penny and Gadget wouldn't have been so genuine and i still remember that movie rather fondly. i feel like nowadays, movie producers forget that A LOT of good kids movies (or "family-flicks") need to have emotional moments, that are neither underplayed, nor half-assed. and i despise this borderline pretentiously cynical attitude of "wE NeEd To SuBvErT ExPeCtAtIoNs~", where emotional weight is immediately tipped, in favor of cheap jokes. like PLEASE, LET CHARACTERS BE GENUINE, EVEN IF THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO BE WHACKY AND HUMOROUS!

I remember being a big fan of the first inspector gadget film when I was really young, I wasn't that big of a fan of the second one, and the way people talked about the two movies online seemed to reinforce that idea, but this video is making me question my memory of this. You've convinced me to watch them again to see how I feel about them now.
