I remember downloading Raditude when it was first released. I listened to three or four songs, and they all made me cringe so bad I immediately deleted it. About an hour after deleting the album, I went to the store to get something to drink. When I got out of my car I happened to notice a hard copy of Raditude on the ground that someone had smashed into pieces. Needless to say, I laughed my ass off.

Watching Cuomo perform can't stop partying is so odd. He's still the same awkward performer from his earlier shows, with really stiff movements, kind of hunched over, and arms pretty much locked in one position as he goes about. Hearing him sing about getting bitches and doing shots of Patron is like hearing Kanye West singing Irish Punk Rock.

Also the song sounds so sour and grim for a dance song, largely because it’s built on a MINOR chord progression, while the drums sound so LIFELESS and DULL (probably the biggest problem with late 2000s-early 2010s pop music, yes even the good songs).

Playing devil's advocate: Allow me to defend the poor and defenseless "Raditude" as it seems to lack advocates. I really hate this album a lot less now than when it came out in '09. It sounds like a couple of guys blowing off steam and just releasing a party record. I see it more as an exercise in irony than just playing to the masses (although "Put Me Back Together" is pretty much just that). I'm not sure the guys took it seriously themselves. Even "Can't Stop Partying" has an edge of satire in it. Maybe not what we wanted from them, but a band doing what they want when they want is not a bad thing. I'd even go so far as to say that it has some of their most infectious pop songs ever. "If You're Wondering" has a bouncy jangle-pop vibe. "I'm Your Daddy" takes a page right out of the book of 80's new-wave (i.e. Cars, Devo) and even "The Girl Got Hot" is fun with its arena rock-stomp. And there are traces of the Weezer we all love with "Let It All Hang Out," which is the best they can do in marrying this pop-sound with their classic sound. Those 4 songs have a place in the Weezer pantheon, methinks, while the rest of the album is hit-and-miss for me (and a lot, I'm sure). But again, people need not take it so seriously. Anyway, that's just what I (a Blue/Pinkerton die-hard such as yourself) have to say after 5 years of wrestling w/ it! Hope you took time out of your day to finish this ridiculously long comment. And for what it's worth you're really good at this, like an awesome hybrid of Anthony Fantano ("The Needle Drop") and Doug "Nostalgia Critic" Wilson! Keep it up and I'm sure you'll have a following.

One of the big reasons for me to like modern Weezer is the irony, satire and mockery. Their style has taken on so many weird pop and indie influences recently, and I can't stand Lil Wayne and his dreadful verse in Can't Stop Partying, but as you said it seems like guys having fun, blowing off steam and just letting it all hang out, so to speak. The fact that these once-nerdy little guys are throwing around phrases like "out with my homies", "Step up, I'll mess with your face", "I'm your daddy" and stuff like that just makes me die laughing. They've grown out of the durgy post-grunge sound that we all know and love and I'm not sure they've grown up exactly but they've evolved in a really interesting way. There have been a few dismal efforts along the way but they seem more than ever like a band who are having an amazing time doing whatever they want and loving every minute of it. And that's what being in a band is about.
@Uncledanmeira10 жыл бұрын
Yeah, when I listened to it, I really didn't know if I was supposed to take this song seriously. There's no way it would be made with no irony involved.

Yes, I think after hearing the acoustic version of Can't Stop Partying I see it as the other side of the coin of The Good Life. I actually see a lot of Pinkerton in the lyrics (aside from that God awful Lil Wayne verse). I think Rivers is communicating a mixed message, like he has a love/hate relationship with the party scene and celebrity.

I just listened to this entire series, and while I don't agree with most of it, I had fun listening to your AVGN of Rock style commentary. Now I'm going to throw a curveball: behind _Pinkerton_, _Raditude_ was my 2nd favorite Weezer album. A lot of this has to do with the fact that I replaced _Can't Stop Partying_ with the _Alone II_ version in my library. Don't get me wrong, the _Raditude_ version is an abomination. I consider it their only truly bad song. I actually found it funny that you brought up the Alone version, because I feel the exact same way! The most disappointing thing about these reviews for me was that they came across very biased. The songs you don't like, you don't really give much of a chance by using live footage recorded on a cell phone to make them seem extra crappy, but the songs you do like, you use the studio version. _The Greatest Man (That?/Who?) Ever Lived does not sound like that on the album. But anyways, I'll try to justify my love for _Raditude_ in a way you can understand. I think it rocks harder than most of their other albums. There is a lot of raw rock sound in this record that they are able to just unleash without holding back. My personal favorites _Tripping Down the Freeway_, _Get Me Some_ and _Let It All Hang Out_ are probably the most head banging tunes the band has put out. You criticized _Make Believe's_ songwriting for not being true to something Weezer would write, and songs like _Put Me Back Together_ and _Girl Got Hot_ rectify that, even going back to some of the personal-angst themes from _Pinkerton_. They remind me of _Across the Sea_ or _El Scorcho_ in a way. And you were wayyy to quick to dismiss the bonus tracks. I think that ever since the red album, the bonus tracks have become an important part of the album for Weezer. The solo in _Get Me Some_ is INSANE, and _Prettiest Girl In The Whole Wide World_ is simple but beautiful and has REALLY emotional lyrics. I could go on longer about this album, but I'm really just trying to express my viewpoint, so I think this comment suffices. Don't be surprised if 10 years from now, this become a cult favorite among Weezer fans. I just hope the deluxe edition re-release tosses out _Can't Stop Partying_ and puts something like _Represent_ on instead.
@JordoTWFS3 жыл бұрын
I have a ton of respect for this comment. It's a very interesting take, and that's one of the great things about Weezer! Their discography is so vast and unique that barely anyone has the same opinion on their projects. With that being said... NIGGA PLEASE! THIS ALBUM IS STEAMING FECAL MATTER SITTING IN THE SUN ON A HOT SUMMER DAY! RADITUDE IS THE MUSICAL EMBODIMENT OF "Don't touch me, I'm sterile!" FROM THAT ONE SPONGEBOB EPISODE! NEVER HAVE I EVER BEEN MORE DISAPPOINTED IN A PIECE OF ART/MEDIA BEFORE RADITUDE DISGRACED MY EARS. MENTIONING RADITUDE IN THE SAME BREATH AS PINKERTON IS LIKE COMPARING SONIC 3 TO SONIC BOOM. BOOOOY IF YOU DONT STOP. Now that I've got that out of my system, it's cool to know that someone out there loves this album, and can justify it. I hope you're rocking out to it to this day! All the power to ya.

You got it backwards about Pat Wilson not wanting to play the drums. Rivers didn't want to play guitar because he wanted to I guess focus on just singing and being a frontman around that time so Pat decided he'd rather be the one playing guitar then hiring someone else and he respected Freese a lot and didn't have a problem with him taking over some of the drumming. Also, the acoustic version of Can't Stop Partying is not a "re-imagining" of the song, it's the original version of the song. But yeah, it's awesome in that demo. I can't believe you didn't touch on Prettiest Girl AT ALL, just a passing mention. That's a song Rivers wrote way back in like 1997, it was one of a few possible tracks for the third weezer album that he'd sometimes try out with Homie, his "country" band (you can find bootlegs of the songs, which are awesome btw... on youtube. Sunshine O in particular is amazing.). Fans had been wanting that track for years and we finally got it. There's a few different versions of it including an incomplete demo on the Alone albums, but it's a lot better then you gave it credit for I think. I like the review but at an hour, yeah man, a little too long. Your other reviews were at a good length though. I enjoy them and it's nice to see someone passionately talking about Weezer in some capacity. I like the Dragonball references haha, as I am a huge DB/Z fan. They've started to post clips from their new album and stuff, if you haven't seen it yet. Sounds promising from the little bit they have teased.

I'm immensely curious to hear what he would have to say about that band, specifically that album, in a separate video not dedicated to ripping some record a new asshole. I've liked AAR for years and as I've grown older and my musical tastes have matured through seeking out more music, AAR has remained a personal favorite. When I came back to their music after a while I was impressed by the surprisingly proficient musicianship (Not something you expect from one of those bands known for attracting the screaming rabid fangirls. It's kind of disappointing to wonder how unappreciated their abilities remain despite their popularity.) They don't write the most technical music, but what they do they do damn well. Much better than most of their contemporaries, anyway. Kids in the Street is wonderful and a perfect example of how a band can mature without sacrificing their identity. The Rock Critic

If you're wondering is one of the catchiest songs ever written. The blue album was my first cd and I've been a hardcore fan ever since. My buddies and I all grew up playing weezer in cover bands. Beverly hills was the worst song I had ever heard. We were almost all pretty disappointed with the red album and had almost given up on weezer but when we heard if you're wondering, it gave us back hope. We started playing it right away at bars and always got everyone dancing. And the lyrics are awesome. He sings about taking her to best buy...because that's what happened. It's a song written for his wife and I'm sure she remembers best buy. He's also saying, at first I was just treating you like a buddy (going to best buy) but you were thinking this is serious(meeting her parents). And the girl got hot is just a fun catchy rocker. But i pretty much agree with you on the rest of the album.

I don't think you gave Jermaine Dupri enough of a proper introduction. He has writing and production credits on some of the biggest R&B and Hip Hop albums of the 90's and the '00s. Also, Lil Wayne had a run of incredible albums and mixtapes in the mid to late '00s. The problem with him was that he would show up anywhere for a guest verse, with varying degrees of effort and success. He really oversaturated the market before falling off BIG TIME in the 2010's. Of course, none of this takes away from how bad of idea "Can't Stop Partying" is.

Great review! My only defense for the basically impossible to defend Can't Stop Partying is exactly what you said about the acoustic version that Rivers does on Alone II. It is actually musically good and the minor chords and more mellow take is much better than the pop disaster. Only real redeeming factors of Raditude was Put Me Back Together and Love is the Answer. Great reviews on all the albums. Hope you are as excited as I am by the previews and singles of EWBAITE

Rivers said he purposely made raditude a bad album because it was the last album they were under contract with Geffen and the label didn't want them to experiment and make and release a pop album full of 3 minute songs ASAP.

I actually like Can't Stop Partying but I enjoy the Chamillionaire version and hate the Lil Wayne version. I grew up in the ghetto so i heard a lot of hip hop and hard rap. So i enjoy this song as I am no longer in that environment and it scratches the itch when upbeat. And the acoustic version is so so good. It seems to me this is not a Weezer rock album. It was just too Popy and generic and other things. Not the worst since I enjoy pop and chiptune music but if you were a straight up Weezer fan from the beginning, yeah, this album is not anything like them. But since I came at it from after the album was released and had listened to a lot of other Pop, I thoroughly enjoyed most of the songs on this album. But I can see how some people, looking for their unique sound left feeling as this was all over the place. It hit all the notes for me and my background and have enjoyed most of their music. I have found i love most songs acoustically versus how they originally sound. If anyone knows a pop/rock album made acoustically, send it my way, for some reason songs sound better to me like that. And again, listen to Can't Stop partying that way. It is the best, no kidding. So so so good. And keep on critiquing Rock Critic. You make some very valid and salient points. I love the band but this album was just not "them" on it.If it was just generic pop/rock/rap(?) people band, it would be fine. But the expectation is, a Weezer album, and really the anger at this album comes from that disappointment. But like all things, sometimes things sound better with more distance and a different music environment in the mainstream. Overall, good break down. Keep up the good work.

The acoustic version of Can't Stop Partying was actually the version Rivers wanted to put on the album, the version that actually ended up on the record was a remixed and rerecorded version that was done later. When Dupri gave Rivers the song, he liked it, but didn't agree with the message the song gave. So that's when he reworked it to create the acoustic version that ended up not going on the album. Also I think I'm Your Daddy is a good pop song...still kinda creepy though lol. Anyways, great series. I'll be interested to see what you thought of Hurley because I actually really enjoyed it. Rock on my friend.

I've loved this video series, I'm surprised that it doesn't have more views. It's very well done technically and it's always entertaining. I'm glad you love the acoustic version of Can't Stop Partyin', it's so good. Anyway what's your opinion of the song Paperface?
@CrashThompson10 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! I actually really dig that track. It's so high-energy, and off the rails. I can see why they left it off of the final product, it's aggro nature wouldn't have gelled terribly well with the blue album's overall vibe, but damn is it satisfying nonetheless. It makes me wonder what Weezer would have sounded like if they had gone with a more unhinged sound. Something tells me they could have totally pulled it off if they wanted to.

The Rock Critic I did enjoy it! I didn't get the chance to watch it until like 12 tonight but I must say this one, despite Ratitude being TERRIBLE, this video was the best. It was funny and I laughed at the "BEST BUY!!!" part. I also was really surprised when I saw my comment about Beverly Hills appear in the video. Funny thing about that, Blue Album came out 2 years before I was even born, and Pinkerton came out the year I was born...and I didn't really start paying attention to music on the radio until about 2004 when Green Day released American Idiot. Beverly Hills was actually the first song I ever knew by Weezer, and I was 9 when Make Believe came out in 2005. At that age I kinda just saw it as that hooky song on the radio. I never knew a Weezer song until then, but knowing the band name Weezer I was able to catch Say It Ain't So on Rockband, and I heard songs over the years like Troublemaker, Pork and Beans, and eventually If I Want You To, but other than that I never really knew any Weezer songs up until I heard Buddy Holly on Pandora on the Blink-182 channel since I am a huge fan of pop-punk and grunge...I heard the song before but I never knew much about Weezer until this year (these videos helped) Buddy Holly lead me to explore the Blue Album and it became an instant favorite for me, and me being the music nerd I am I watched videos and I saw yours, and when you reviewed Pinkerton it made me buy it (I eventually bought Green and Maladroit and those are decent too)...I even have the guitar tab books to Blue and Pinkerton now and they actually made me get a little better at guitar...(never knew Rivers was capable of such guitar work since Beverly Hills was the first Weezer song I learned) these 4 albums that Weezer put out before Make Believe makes Beverly Hills sound AWFUL now...what's worse is Beverly Hills sounds GREAT again since I have had some awful exposure to Raditude...I HATE Raditude...it makes me realize how NORMAL the lyrics are on Make Believe when compared...Hurley I don't know much about but I can't wait to see the review. Also Weezer is at work on a new album...I'm actually excited because I heard some of the teasers they released on their KZbin channel and the instrumentation sounds pretty sick, no synths, and recently they played a song at their cruise back in February called "Back to The Shack" and as cheesy as it sounds (oh and it is a cheesy song) the message Rivers is giving actually gives hope..."Maybe I should play the lead guitar and Pat should play the drums"..."This is what I was meant to do and you can't put that on sale"..."Sorry guys I didn't realize that I needed you so much, thought I'd get new audience and I forgot that disco sucks"..."Rockin' out like it's '94"...Weezer may actually release their first good album since Maladroit...atleast I hope but these teasers actually sound good! I wouldn't be surprised if this next album good also that the fact it's been 4 years since Hurley, which is a shocker since Weezer released Red, Rad and Hurley consecutively...hopefully 4 years of criticism and some time off finally brought Weezer back to what they used to do. (I wrote this comment on a lot of caffeine) Can't wait to see the Hurley review! Also I'm gonna post some videos soon about bands and music...check 'em out

Don Beck Thanks for sharing that! It's interesting to hear the perspective of someone who was exposed to the band so late in their career. I guess it's a bit more difficult for some of us "old-timers" to be more forgiving since we started out hearing some of their best work. :) I haven't heard the new song, only because I'm trying to avoid the hype machine for when the album is eventually released (I will do a RAFOW episode on that album once it comes out and I can find the time), but I am looking forward to it. A lot of what I'm hearing about the production sounds very positive. I will give it up to Weezer, they are a band that can, and often has, learned from their mistakes. Hopefully that's what we see on this new one. Finger crossed!

The Rock Critic No problem! I wish I was a teenager in the 90s...every band I like was so much better! I was born in 1996, and now I'm 18...I wish I was 18 in 1996!
@Glennenenen10 жыл бұрын
Don Beck What's great about The Blue Album and Pinkerton is that they're pretty timeless so it doesn't matter if you were 18 in 1997 or now. Their sound and message and energy still hold up today. I didn't get into Pinkerton until about 2007 when I was 21 and it holds up so well.
@timdickens590210 жыл бұрын
The length of this was quite fitting for me. I purchased it & could not listen to it all the way through while driving home because I thought i might jerk the wheel whilst driving over a bridge. After that first song..... well enough said. Then every few weeks I thought, what if I am Pinkertoning this album? Give it another spin! I think it took me a full 4 months before completing it. I was 16 when Blue came out & the greatness that led up to this pile won't lose any luster for me. But as you stated, "WHAT HAPPENED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I get the feel that the song "I can't stop partying" should have been an opener while the acoustic should have been the closure. It adds a lot more depth to the song, could have saved the overall album and actually make it feel honest. It's the only time I've ever really seen where the track order could have saved not only the song but an album. Maybe that's just me being pretentious however.
@Kha0s19648 жыл бұрын
+crazysnas181 It's a good idea, but imo, the song is still too ridiculous. If the normal version of cant stop partying was a little lower on the bs, like the lil wayne verse and the lazy instrumentation but was still more poppy than your average "pop weezer song" I think it would've worked better. in that scenario you mention

Sadly, I have met someone who's claimed that Raditude is good and that I'm just too harsh/hipster (his words, not mine). To add insult to injury, he claimed that "Can't Stop Partying" is awesome and didn't care for the acoustic version. Long story short, shortly after our thought provoking conversation, I raged and woke up on the floor of an Arby's bathroom in Mexico, with a half empty bottle of Pepsi, a broken pair of My Little Pony kid's sunglasses, and a new subscription to Sports Illustrated

I think when it comes to The drums, the simplicity of the actual riffs themselves really dictate how complicated the drums will be. As a drummer, I tend to think this way when it comes to constructing a song.

Only song I like on the album itself is "Don't Wanna Let You Go". It's actually a personal song to Rivers that's Pet Sounds era Beach Boys like if it weren't for sterile production. Alone II has an acoustic version of it that's also nice, although I actually prefer the album version because of the vocal harmonies. With a little more rawer production, it could be considered a Weezer classic, but I guess it had to be made this way to fit in with the album. Also, I love the raw drum work in the b-side, "PGITWWW", and consider it fun, though I respect your opinion.

David Stepp I’m glad at least someone talked about Don’t Wanna Let You Go. I know this is a four year old comment but imma reply anyway. This song got me into listening to Weezer because it was the song that I needed to hear at the time for the circumstances I was in. I’m grateful for this song and I was upset he didn’t get into talking about it...
