You mentioned that EWBAITE is somewhere in between Blue/Pinkerton and Green/Maladroit. I personally believe that this album falls right next to Blue, and just below Pinkerton. I've never stopped liking Weezer at any point in the last 20 years. I admit they have had ups and downs, but I don't think Make Believe is a bad album but it's also not my favorite. EWBAITE rises above EVERYTHING post-90s though. The lyrics finally get back to the dark emocore vibe of Pinkerton. They are experimenting. They put out weird melodies that work, like in Blue. One thing that you didn't even mention in your review was the framing device, which we have NEVER seen in a Weezer album but works beautifully here. What makes this album rise above everything else they've done this century, is that they are innovating again. They do one of the most powerful songs they've written to date with Foolish Father, and then go ahead and top it with the Futurescope trilogy. Return to Ithaka is so freaking beautiful. This thing belongs right up there with the 90s albums. And just a couple personal notes: Could Eulogy be about Kiss? Could The British Are Coming be about Punk Rock in general? I am surprised you didn't like DaVinci. I am not a fan of the whistling, but I stopped noticing it after the first five seconds. The lyrics blew me away, and the chorus is so catchy. It has my favorite lyrics in the album and it might be my favorite song on the album besides Return to Ithaka. I think it's certainly possible that Cleopatra is self referential. Nice Truffaut reference. You are really well cultured. I lost it during the Strong Bad reference. You are definitely very well cultured. I hope everything goes better with your hellspawn breakup. ... ... A Goddamn Bear.

What is amazing about this album is that it's not just a return to form in ways, but it also shows growth from even their first 2 albums. There are the Queen elements in "I've Had it Up to Here" that were not found in Blue or Pinkerton, plus that pretty prog trilogy at the end. It stands on its own and yet fits cozily in with their better albums (which I count as everything from Blue through Maladroit). Probably now my 3rd favorite album by the guys and definitely my pick for their most ambitious!

I actually watched this series over the passing of a few days. I'm really happy that everything actually was alright in the end. What you said about sales not mattering in the end and effort and sincerety being the most important thing really spoke to me. I'm a crummy internet artist who doesn't get a lot of attention almost to the point of frustration. "Ain't Got Nobody" is, like many of the other songs on the album, is not just a love song, but a song about Weezer's relationship to their fans. The girl that was just pretend were the fake fans, the "Beverly Hills" fans. He's looking "all around the nation" for his TRUE fans. Cuomo, being something of a narcissist, has used the love of the fans to fill a void left by a parental lack of love. "Da Vinci" is obviously a song written for Cuomo's wife. To me, I don't know how you aren't touched to see the man who wrote the clingy, creepy, raw and beautiful Pinkerton in a stable, loving, mature relationship. Hell, he outright tells us he's settled now with her in "Back to the Shack". Also, "Women are a complete mystery"- Stephen Hawking. www.telegraph.co.uk/news/science/stephen-hawking/8993228/Stephen-Hawking-Women-are-a-complete-mystery.html "Cleopatra" is about Cuomo growing older, not a woman. Cleopatra is just supposed to be the archetypal floozy, the ones that Rivers is writing about in most of his songs (you know, the ones in the "Beverly Hills" video). These throwaway lusts can't control him anymore, he "older" and "colder", and doesn't burn as hot and cold as before. It comes right after "Da Vinci" for a reason. And "The Futurescope Trilogy" is the final apology to the fans. He doesn't have the right words to persuade you, the individual Weezer fan, to love Weezer again, but that final guitar solo is a love letter to you beyond words.

A goddamn amazing return to form. I was one of those guys that waited for YEARS for something like this to come along(and pledged 150 bucks for this slice of awesome) and Weezer delivered. Glad to have been along for such a wild and touching ride through nostalgia lane. Can't wait to see what you pull off next. Maybe short little "Mini docs" that sum up a band(like, say, Talk Talk, The Hip, Rush) in one video, rather than something on such a grand scale. I don't think I've Had It Up To Here is trying to apologize to fans and the public. It's almost the inverse of what Back To The Shack is saying. Riviola is fed up with being written off as a "nostalgia" band act. Everything they've done and will ever do is going to be compared to Blue and Pink. And as an artist that must get frustrating. I wish this would've been the lead single. It's sassy, snarky, and so so so so good. Also, I think The British Are Coming could be about going against those who are in a higher position of power trying to keep you from reaching your goals and dreams. Possibly about their label(s)? It could be either Geffen or Republic Records, but they're both owned by Universal Music Group so they're practically the same thing.

Regarding Cleopatra, don't get creeped out at the 5, 10, 15. Think of years together, not a girl's age. Think of a guy getting divorced after 40 years of marriage because somebody really weak fell for her spell; she's getting herself born again, and you are like "good riddance".

I just finished this series for the third time. Man, the passion laced throughout is very much appreciated! I have always liked Weezer, but never really dug into their discography until watching these videos for the first time around. I was SO thankful I did, and it seemed to be the perfect time because they were putting out some brilliant albums such as this one, then suddenly I had the White Album which I listened to non-stop for at least a few months. I really considered that one to be even better than EWBAITE, but I absolutely love both of them. Pacific Daydream is one I haven't really listened to much of yet, but I'm sure I'll get around to it. Mostly, I just really appreciate this series and the obvious effort that went into it which helped pull me into the fold as a hardcore Weezer fan!

Fun story: I was at the show (St. Louis) that you got the "I've Had It Up To Here" footage from. In that video it was taken from the balcony and Rivers didn't even realize there was a balcony until like halfway through the set and in the middle of one of the songs, he started looking up at the balcony and had this "oh crap" look on his face (and he mentioned that he had no idea there was a balcony when the song was done). I was personally on the floor for the show, but I figured mentioning the balcony story would be an interesting footnote. Awesome review (and series).

Great job as always, Crash. I found the album on KZbin a few days before it came out and gave it a skeptical listen...and boy was I surprised. I already knew I loved "Cleopatra," but the rest of the album floored me. Even "Back to the Shack" (which I was lukewarm on) sounded much better in context. I felt like I had finally gotten my band back...the Weezer that was my favorite band all through my high school and college years. (I was 17 when the blue album came out.) THIS is the kind of album I had been hoping for when the green album came out. I'm in agreement with most of what you said. I personally like "Da Vinci" a lot, although I agree with you that the whistling is slightly annoying. I wish Ric had gotten his way with that one. I actually think the lyrics in the chorus are quite clever (and nerdy), and I'm someone who thinks pop culture references in songs are very hit and miss. They have to be done just right and I think "Da Vinci" hits the mark. Also, I disagree slightly about "Futurescope." I think the whole damn thing is easily one of the best pieces of music they've ever laid down. Back when the red album came out, I heard a lot of people compare "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived" to Queen, which I thought was ridiculous. To me, "Futurescope" is where the Queen comparisons feel apt. It sounds like it flew in straight from side two of "Queen II." No joke...I got choked up the first time I heard it and I have done so every time since. I feel like, with EWBAITE, Weezer rediscovered their charm and their innocence. You nailed it when you said it feels like they remembered it's okay to be nerdy again. That's why I fell in love with their music in the first place! Oh, and nice shirt! I came so close to buying that so many times back in the late '90s but never got the chance to pick it up. I do, however, have a Mykel & Carli benefit t-shirt. Still one of the five best concerts I've ever seen. Again, great job on ALL of these videos. I can't wait to see what you've got in store for us in the future.

Thank you very much. You make some very valid points yourself. Especially the comparison of "Futurscope" to "Greatest Man..." On "Futurescope" everything flows SO much better. "Greatest Man..." always felt really disjointed and mishmashed, but "Futurscope" is much more rich and vibrant and explosive in it's delivery. It's a technical GORGEOUS composition and THIS feels way more apt to lay beside Queen than GM. Yeah... it's nice to have them back. Like I said in the review, nothing makes me feel better than to be able to end this series on a high note. (And yeah, side 2 of Queen II... that is no joke. Love that album.)

Honestly, and I'm not just saying this, if it weren't for this series of reviews, I wouldn't be the die-hard Weezer fan I am now. Back in September of this year, Crash, I watched the first one of the videos in the series from 2012, and watching it introduced me to the band. I had HEARD of Weezer before, but most of what I had heard was that they're some rock band that act silly and makes sucky music. You see, I'm only 19, so I didn't grow up with Weezer back in the late 90s when I was unborn and one of age when their first two albums dropped. Immediately after watching that review, I started listening to The Blue Album, Pinkerton, and even the unreleased Songs from the Black Hole. I listened to these albums over and over again all that same week. Imagine how shocked I was that right when I started getting into this band it turns out they would be releasing a brand new album, built up as their act of redemption, so quickly after first exploring their work. I'm just so glad how things turned out, and that I guess the rock gods answered your and all of our prayers by allowing EWBAITE to actually exist. Thanks for this series! I plan on re-watching it many times in the future.

Discovered this series while going through my own personal re-visiting of Weezer's history (inspired very much by EWBAITE) and I gotta say- excellent work, man. Weezer has such an interesting discography and it's always great to hear other passionate fan's personal journeys with it. Man, I loved this album! I don't think I've seen a much more solid release that I've anticipated in forever! My favorites are Cleopatra, Ain't Got Nobody, Foolish Father and I've Had it Up To Here. And I also don't think there's a bad track! I think Sonic Highways by Foo Fighters is #1 in 2014 for me but #2 is definitely this. Great video once again!

Maybe to you, but it's pretty much 50/50. Some fans aren't in to the concept and the new sounds, others are glad to hear something new. My only disappointment is that it was only 8 songs. I didn't expect a lot out of the band because they're all in their mid 40s and they all have kids so I can see why they may not be the same as The Colour and The Shape or There is Nothing Left to Lose. I mean I don't expect a scream fest, or weird quirky lyrics that they used to do on the first album. All I expect from Foo Fighters when they say they're going to make a new album, is a new album because every album Foo Fighters have released is unique in its own way and I don't think they have a bad album. But you do have to watch the HBO series for the lyrics to really hit you. I don't blame Foo Fighters for having fun for themselves with this one. I'm sure Dave is tired of writing love songs and songs that people will assume are about Kurt Cobain

I can see your points and I do watch the HBO Series....but let me defend myself and have a nice debate with other Foo Fighter fans, that way I don't seem like an ignorant person. First off, I know the band isn't the same as back then. I understand if Dave doesn't want to write lyrics about love if he doesn't want to. But my problem with the lyrics is that they seem forced. They seem like they are trying to tell a story about the city they were in when writing the song, but they're jumbled and make almost no sense. Also the whole point of the album was to go to a city and get influences from there, but it's just the same typical Foo Fighters sound. Secondly, each song has a different contributor but I can hardly tell. It makes it seem useless and kind of a waste. Thirdly, IT DOESN'T FEEL LIKE AN ALBUM AT ALL! The tracks feel like B-Sides that were thrown into a pot and strewn together to make stew that has no flavor. The songs don't have a cohesive flow to them and the song's structures are so jumbled and battered that the tracks themselves don't stand on their own really well either. Not to mention the songs are super long, longer than they needed to be. In the end, I don't see this as Foo Fighters album. I see it as a special project, not a album. I wish they would have changed up the formula a little and experimented. They always play it safe. I'm sorry if this makes you mad, but I was just really disappointed with this release.

It's not going to be easy for people to digest but it is kind of artistic, and yeah I can see how some of the lyrics don't fall in place but then again the lyrics on their first album are a disaster and Dave said it himself. Though I can say the weird hooks on that album are so fun "fingernails are pretty, fingernails are good" kind of like "oh sweet ignition be my fuse"

If I were to pick 2 songs on Sonic Highways that suck out. It would be SFN because it's just a really well constructed song aside from what people say about the Holy Diver thing and Outside. Joe Walsh was probably the best contributor along with the preservation hall on In The Clear. And Outside is just so fun with the bass and the crazy jam after the second chorus when they're playing in what sounds like a 13 beat pattern

Love these videos man, and this one did not disappoint. Know you probably want to stop dwelling on the song, but have you heard the rock version of Can't Stop Partying and if so what do you think of it? For reference, it's called the "Coconut Teaser Mix" There was also a full band version performed on the Weezer Cruise that's very similar to the Alone II version and that I think would be the definitive version if we had a better quality recording.

This review was AWESOME, dude. English is not my first language, so I haven't really paid attention to the "Foolish Father" lyrics until now. And you nailed it. Also, yeah, I think you overcomplicated Cleopatra, but lol whatever. I always have chills when that beautiful solo comes up. Weezer has been in my life for some really long time and Pinkerton is one of the albums that helped me go through bad stuff. So it was so nice when I heard "Back to the Sack" for the first time. What's your take on Weezer's Songs From The Black Hole? At least from what there is currently of it between b-sides and Rivers demos. Even one of the arrangements someone has created for the album (soniclovenoize's is my fave). It has an overall feel I oddly enough appreciate slightly above Pinkerton (eventhough I LOVE that album) just the concept brings out this emotion in a pronounced way through the demos that is unique from their actual studio records to me. But i digress, what is your take? (Idk if you may have discussed this in your Pinkerton or Blue album videos but I have just subbed to your channel so i haven't seen em yet)

so rock critic, i was thinking, perhaps the 15 years bit in eulogy for a rock band is about weezer, but it isnt meant as an end, so much as a new beginning. for instance, towards the end of this review you say this is weezer's most mature album so far. perhaps, the 15 years they are referring to is from blue album to hurley. the rock band that they are eulogizing is the old weezer, the immature yet endearing weezer we grew up with, as they become a new weezer, a more mature weezer. what do you think?

That was a very interesting review. I am 17 and never had to wait for a Weezer album to come out. I would just go to my older brother who had everything through The Red Album. The first song I heard was Undone and it was awesome! (I was like 8) but I never had to go through the pain of hearing a bad album after years of waiting. I can see how that would affect your opinion of raditude, my personal favorite. It had this lovey-duvey fell to it and I was in middle school at that time and really into this one girl and it was what I listened to. Also, for the longest time Hurley was the only album I could listen to because my brother got robbed and I loved that one too. Don't get me wrong Blue and the older ones are great but those are the ones that made me love Weezer.Thank you for all of that helpful insight on the bands past and how it has made them less known.

The Rock Critic Would your opinion on the song change if I told you that the "Love Songs" all told a continuous story? Think about it. Ain't Got Nobody is the protagonist searching for somebody to love. And in Lonely Girl, he finds the one person in the world who is his exact equal. Da Vinci is him feeling the giddiness of first love and he proclaims his feelings for her. Go Away is the new couple, after years of being together, they fight. Which is typical in every relationship. The protagonist is much more confident because of her, that is why he goes away with other women. But she's had enough of this. Cleopatra is the angry ex-boyfriend. But he's not angry in your typical sense, he doesn't say he hated all the moments he's had with her. He says that he should have quit sooner as to avoid the pain of her being how she is now.
