On another note, after binge listening to their early albums and looking up their chart history, I just realized that Taking Back Sunday technically qualifies for a OHW episode, I wonder if Todd would be Up for that

See, I don't think they count. This probably didn't get high enough to count as a hit and they had other minor "hits" outside of this. Granted I don't think anyone would mind seeing that episode... But like I said in this video, I wouldn't encourage a lot of y'all to dig into these guys back catalog. :S

Crash Thompson this was a big hit here in the U.K. Song still gets played out in bars and clubs as far as I know. Not surprising it was top ten all over Europe considering its a massive pastiche of 80s euro-dance. I reckon it owes a specific debt to “boys” by Sabrina. Also There’s one hell of a weird through-line as I mostly know that sampled pet shop boys song as the theme tune to the BBC’s “The Clothes Show” - clips on YT of that should show you why it’s weird to go from that to BHG in 2 steps 🤣

@@CrashThompson He just covered "I Melt With You" which did even worse than this did on the charts, as well as "Mexican Radio" which was comparable to this in terms of chart success. And he covered bands that had minor hits after the first one that just aren't very well remembered, like Falco and Men Without Hats. He probably would count this, but it does technically break a lot of his rules, although he's broken those rules before, and he has refused to cover acts like Modest Mouse and Dropkick Murphys that technically meet his rules but that he doesn't feel are one hit wonders in spirit (and I'm pretty sure that he wouldn't do an episode on Jimmy Hendrix despite the fact that Jimmy Hendrix technically meets his general rules). I think that he would be willing to do it especially if he became broke again and did Patreon requests, but who knows.

One thing worth noting about The Ballad of Chasey Lain - it's immediately followed by an interlude where Chasey Lain herself quips about how she'd rather do all sorts of horrible things to herself than take the guy up on his offer. So, I'm fairly certain she was in on the joke. Great video, BTW.

"Mope" might be their most pro-ironic post-modern meme shitpost of a song, and an expensive one at that. Sampling "Rock Me Amadeus," Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Metallica, the Pac-Man theme, and a Simpsons quote, I'm sure their label wasn't too pleased with those royalty payouts. This is the end result of a brief deep dive into... whatever this band is. And I've heard this song on the rock radio station here where I live for about 15 years, never knew who did it or the name of the song until this video. That's when I went "OHHHHHHHHHhhhhh that's who did it" so thank you Crash. I think?

Mope is literally nothing but samples. Metallica's For Whom the Bell Tolls main riff, "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and even a Homer Simpson sample of him yelling HOLY MACARONI ...which it something that, I must admit, they were REALLY years ahead of their time, it wouldn't sound too far off from what music mashups usually are on our internet age nowadays

I'm going to say this as a 99 HS Grad... Never did I listen to the boy or girl bands, I was at Warped Tour and listen to my Ska, Swing, Punk and Pop Punk music. The only thing I remember about this song is a fun, personal story... I want to say it was later 00's when a group of friends went to an open mic local karaoke run at a Chinese bar, maybe had about 80-90 patrons. My best friend requested this song, 20 minutes later went on stage, began singing this song, and then started humping the wall, then humping a speaker, doing something wrong with the mic, then doing a fully clothed Chippendale's hump of the ground with full-on cheering and laughing. That is when the owner ran out with a second mic going "Too sexy, too sexy... no more." Stopped the music and then said, "You are no longer allowed to sing this song." We were regulars at the time... but the first time he sang this song. I'll remember this song for that.

It’s almost-certainly true. Stan is a carbon copy of Chasey Lane, somehow taken even further. I mean, it just seems so unlikely that two Whiteboy rappers would suddenly choose to do obsessive fan picaresque narratives at the same time. And you gotta realize that, strange as it may seem, before Eminem hit, Bloodhound Gang probably represented the Commerical high watermark of Whiteboy rap. This was all juuuuust before Limp Bizkit and Kid Rock. (You could throw ICP into the mix, but I don’t think They count, even though Eminem fairly-famously was obsessed with them too). Plus, go check out Real Slim Shady, he’s aping Bloodhound Gang’s sense of humor and ratatat-pop-culture-references-over-euro-beats formula to a tee.

I’m not saying that it’s better than anything they made, Hell no, but I personally get way more enjoyment out of this song than anything that Tool has ever done, I’ll admit that they’re talented but god I can’t stand them, with their ridiculous pretentiousness, a fanbase that fits that band perfectly, and the main thing that really gets under my skin about these guys, prioritizing song length and lyrics that try to be as “deep” as possible over creating compelling melodies and hooks

When somebody takes a sample and uses it like the way you described, by changing it, I think it shouldn't be called sample, it should be called adaptation. The best example that's always on my mind is Coldplay's Talk, which takes that sample from Kraftwerk's Computer Love, reworks it and makes it their own. What do you think?
@crazydud3380

To some extent, I definitely agree. The sam thing is generally true in Hollywood for good remakes versus bad remakes. The bad ones either just make the same movie again, or change it so much that they clear just used the name to sell tickets. The good ones, rare as they may be, still honor and respect the original, without attempting to replace it, while reinterpreting it into something unique. Remakes such as Carpenter's The Thing or Cronenberg's The Fly are excellent examples of this. A musical example could be Butterfly by Crazy Town. Come to think of it, they are similar to the Bloodhound Gang. Both are terrible, with one huge exception of a track where they absolutely rip!

I'd say Foxtrot Uniform Charlie Kilo is another example of a song that's better than it has any business being considering the actual lyrical content.

I am unashamed to say that I have been a fan of the BHG since OFBC came out. Yes, they're crass and stupid and puerile and intentionally offensive. I still find a decent chunk of their bits make me and my friends laugh, even if it's our inner 12-year-old that's laughing. If you want to hear another song of theirs that has a great beat, bass line and lyrical flow, check out "Boom", the last track on One Fierce Beer Coaster. Even has a Vanilla Ice cameo on the first verse.

Bloodhound Gang was the worst dudebro frat comedy music possible, but yeah, I adore Bad Touch. It's the right kind of dumb, as opposed to the rest of their catalog which is very much the wrong kind. And you're right, the flow and internal rhyming are actually shockingly good.

I personally like they’re stuff I understand if you don’t like it that’s totally understandable this is for sureeee an aquired taste , witch is an understatement but the reason they went into obscurity cuz they didn’t make anything from 2005 til 2015 and didn’t promote it . They had a decent following they had solid minor hits that got them on MTV they’re downfall is them not making music for years and they were kicked out of Russia in 2013 where they almost got back together

This was a rad video! The whole thing about the bands with talent having some sort of shtick, reminded me of another band that kinda fits the Primus/Butthole Surfers vibe: Ween. I feel like they’ve been able to last because of a combination of being excellent songwriters, and being off-the-walls bizarre. (Check out their early tapes from the really wacko stuff.) I actually discovered this song and the Bloodhound Gang through that Rock Coliseum, and...yeah, I agree that they’re not all that great. It’s all just kinda the same, in terms of humor and stuff.

The only other Bloodhound Gang songs I regularly return to are "Mope" for being borderline plunderphonics with all its samples, and "Altogether Ooky" for despite awful lyrics being a pretty good alt rock song with a great hook.

Did I like The Bloodhound Gang? Yes...still do, actually. Did I _respect_ The Bloodhound Gang? Nope, never. I mean, as you pointed out Jimmy Pop has a distinctive and borderline great flow, and his lyrics often contained some absolute gems. The thing is, he/they definitely went for quantity over quality on the jokes; some of them fell flat even back then and *many* of them do not stand the test of time (for numerous reasons, most of which you mentioned). All that being said, they were indeed a fun band back in the day *if* you happened to fall into their target demographic, which I and most of my friends at the time did. The lyrics were quotable (not in all company), many of the songs were actually pretty catchy, and in the same way you might tune into a Howard Stern or a Bill O'Reilly just to see what kind of crap they're going to say next, we looked forward to their next release. I think what killed the band was neither a lack of talent nor even the changing of the times, it was the fact that they (like most of us) got older. It's one thing for a bunch of guys in their teens and twenties to be doing these kinds of songs, but it's an entirely different feel when they hit their thirties and forties. That's yet another way that their music aged poorly--mid twenties Jimmy Pop singing "please turn me on I'm Mr. Coffee with an automatic drip" is a damn sight different than late forties Jimmy Pop doing it. For anybody who *is* considering delving into their back catalog, some relatively safe tunes to check out are "Boom" (a collab with Rob Van Winkle aka Vanilla Ice), "Ralph Wiggum" (with lyrics made up entirely of Simpsons quotes from or about said character), and their cover of RUN-DMC's "It's Tricky". The rest of their songs mainly fall under the "depends on your sense of humor & how easily offended you are" category.

I remember being 12 or 13 when this came out and yeah the vocals were a big hook for me. Also in my young naive brain with the 80s vibe I was comparing him to Suggs as a singer (when they are leagues apart from each other) as this was the 1st song I heard by them. They really were an objectively perfect carefree band for young 90s adolescents though.
