Crayola brings out more of the shade and color, but copic blends in better and looks a bit more professional. Copics are also nicer to use. Overall, both look good though. It depends on the artist.

The picture is so cute! The main thing I figured from watching this video is that Copics are much smoother and easier to blend, while crayola has bolder colour but is splotchy and wet when layered.

Very good point! I try never to comment on a photographer's work "oh that looks so good! What camera do you use?!" because it's just rude. Like, tools do not equal results! Even if I actually want to know about their camera, markers, oven, etc, I make sure they know I'm impressed with their TALENT first and foremost, THEN politely ask like "I'm just getting started in this medium. What brand do you recommend I purchase?" Great talent can make great things with pretty crappy supplies. Buying great tools is never a good replacement for practice or talent.

It's probably just the skin tone taking away from the copics, she definitely should have used a more saturated color like the crayola skin tone. Look at the side by side and compare the contrast and smoothness instead of the vibrancy of the tones. It's very clear that the copics gave a much more polished look when you ignore the grayness of the skin tone. Specifically compare the ball on the pokemon's head in the middle, the copic one looks far more shiny, smooth, and round than the other.

To blend with Crayloa, use water (sparingly) and a soft, soft brush. Try watercolor paper or bristol board. This can be done two ways: deposit color on a plastic bag and paint it onto the image, or use the marker on the image and use the damp paintbrush to gradate, blend and smooth. The crayloa products are actually great for student and commercial work. They won't have the staying power of professional materials, but are really the flagship choice of children's creative materials, imho. Baylee Jae, love your videos. :D

Something I'd suggest if you're open to multiple people answering is try investing in watercolor pencils. You can get them for relatively cheap and they're a lot easier to blend than normal colored pencil even if you don't add a touch of water. Crayola sells a pack of them for about $7. They're totally worth it, and are great started tools!

I used to teach a high school art class, not elective, everyone had to take it. They liked their art better when their supplies were not found on the kiddy art isle at Walmart. The student prisma pencils that some Walmarts carry and you can order from their site are good beginning pencils. Sakura oil pastels, not too pricey, look decent. We didn't use markers a lot, and most got Sharpies or I brought my older prismas. (I personally never cared for Copics, just not as vibrant as the prismas I used for so long) Watercolors... I told them they could get cakes or tubes, but not to get cheap cheap ones. If you are getting 30 colors for $3, you likely won't like the results. They were happiest with tube sets or some cakes that averaged a dollar each. Stick and vine charcoal, those are normally pretty standard no matter the brand. And some nice drawing pencils. =) That should cover things for a beginner. You may tweak your list depending on what you want to draw. But anyway, these were students that liked their assignments to look nice, but they cared less about art in their spare time. Think Hobby Lobby supplies from the drawing section. ;)

Yeah it is definely was a lot more vibrant, but I think a big part of that is just the difference in the tones as she mentions. I do think the punchy, vubrant colors which I think compliment Baylee's style more and that the character's skin color looks less ashen in the crayola one makes it look better from afar at least vs the copics.

Art tip- crayolas are water based. Cut the marker open and harvest the ink, transport it to a sealable palette and use it as watercolor! OR you can just scribble on a piece of clear plastic (some ink should be left on the surface) and you can mix it with water. It is way WAY easier and smoother looking than just using it straight from the marker.

BreAuna Love I'll check it out, thanks !!! I don't get to draw much anymore BUT with Bob Ross on Netflix and stumbling across this channel it reignited me to pick it back up. I was never very knowledgeable to what pros use for illustrations and always envied those perfect, solid, streak free colors. I always thought Crayola was some high-tech stuff lol Anyway, I ordered a set of Copic markers that should arrive tomorrow and look forward to a two week staycation and draw like a freak. Just a tip, though you seemed to get it fairly well, when coloring darker skin tones it doesn't exactly work like lighter ones do. There isn't a pink undertone in dark skin, we have either olive tones or warm gold tones. Pink tones always make it look grey. While yes, you don't want it as warm as the Crayola was, it's almost better to be a bit on the warm side than too cool, which is almost opposite of what you'd expect from learning how to do skin from lighter tones. With light skin, if you go too good it looks like a bad fake tan, but dark skin doesn't do that because it's already dark. While it can get a bit tomato-y if you go too orange, going too neutral just looks dead. it also depends on the colors around the skin, of course, but I do think the palette you used might have been a tad bit too grey, as you said yourself. (not trying to hate, just trying to help a bit since I know you aren't used to doing darker skin and obviously you don't have dark skin yourself to reference)

It's cool to be able to see a comparison between the two brands. I personally like the final effect of the crayola markers the best. They are so vibrant!! I haven't used them before, but I see the at the shops a lot so maybe I could give them a try. Both markers have beautiful and unique colouring finishes.

Do you move up and down/back and forth? If so try coloring in a circular motion instead. It sometimes helps with getting rid of that streaky look.

I like using crayola markers in my watercolor paintings, so they work nicely for that. Being water based is good for something. I can blend it or leave it as is.

This just shows that you don't need amazing materials to create amazing work. Even if you get a set of $20 markers (because they'd be a little better than crayolas 😉) you could still make incredible pictures. It's all about the quality of the artist, not the medium. 😊

I think the brightness makes it look a bit fake but this is a picture about creatures getting trapped in tiny balls with weird stickers on so I think the bright colours work on that front. :P

No way. You can't do anything but childish or cartoonish pictures with Crayola markers. They're water-based and like *all* water-based markers no matter how expensive and high-end, they will leave streaks and start destroying the surface of the paper if you even attempt to get a blend or gradient. This has nothing to do with crappy design or shoddy nibs or bad inks - it's the WATER content that does this to paper. There's a reason that professionals prefer alcohol-based markers for stuff like this and this is it. The Crayola picture might look appealing at a distance and on video, but trust me, in person and close up, that picture looks like crap next to the Copic, especially in the areas with shading and transition to different colors.

I bought other cheaper alcohol based markers on a cheap Chinese website (lol) and they aren't as good as copics but are still amazing to use so maybe try finding a cheaper brand of alcohol-based markers if money is your problem.
