What is the difference between a sane ascetic and a crazy ascetic? Bhante Jason explains...

- • Ep12: Meeting A Wander...
37-year old Bhante Jason is an Australian monk who left a career in law to wander the countryside as an ascetic Buddhist monk. Ordained in the Theravanda tradition in Sri Lanka over eight years ago, he lives outdoors without possessions except for his robes and begging bowl.
Seeing hypocrisy in much of modern Buddhism’s approach, Bhante Jason describes his approach to Buddhist practice as ‘Classic’ and chooses to live as closely as he can to the strict monastic rules of the historical Buddha.
In the full interview, I travel out to his rain season retreat cave in the Blue Mountains to meet this unusual and charismatic wanderer.

Maybe they are crazy from our perspective, but dealing with an unseen reality in a perfectly sane manner.

Just a little correction, sadhu aren't what you said they are, the one that you are referring are called as "NAGA" who are the devoties of lord shiva. The rest all the sadhus are philosophers

Saying that you have to develop humility while generalizing an entire country of ascetics to be “crazy” is pretty “crazy” if you ask me

Try taking that asceticism to india and do as they do for the rest of your life. And then start judging who is crazy or not. And btw in hinduism at least renunciates dont want to be anyone's guru... Some have been family men(usually men) who after meeting their duties and reach a certain age, leave all their posessions and become ascetics for their own spiritual fulfillment. Not to start a cult following

"...their own spiritual fulfillment." That sounds utterly narcissistic.

Don’t be offended. There’s a lot of truth in what he is saying and you shouldn’t be offended to hear the truth. There are many misguided sadhus in india that are smoking hash, cannibalizing dead bodies and living like a mad man instead of being a sane ascetic.

I would rather be with the crazy. I think they are just on a deeper journey that you are unaware of. How could you know that they are crazy until you go to their side.

You can be an ascetic & live in a city, you can go for a job or do a business, there's no need to leave your family, or to adopt a clothing style or to beg someone for food. That's where the craziness stands. If you're an ascetic, then you wouldn't have ego, that envelopes all qualities like competing attitude, hatred, vindictive mindset, envy, cynicism, promiscuity. Next after ego, an ascetic wouldn't indulge in s3x, or seek a s3xual partner in his life, will not eat food that involves suffering of animals. Ascetic would always keep in mind that there is "karma"- in simple words "DO EVIL, FACE EVIL". His life decisions & actions will be solely based on this regard. An ascetic would respect the world, beings those inhabits it, comprehend their value & appreciate their existence. An ascetic can be a hard working person who works not only for himself, but for his family, community, country or the world. An ascetic can work for the benefit of others. Praying or living in a jungle won't do anything.

asceticism defines a rather strict renunciation of the world. It's not a metaphorical term that's used for living the common sense good life. "Asceticism" comes from the recognition That practically All human suffering is created from the materialistic, envious, and greedy society we live in; Thus requiring the man/ascetic to refuse to participate/contribute Into a system keeping his fellow man locked in chains.

But you made the mistake of discarding this world, instead of serving your community with all the good that you have to offer. I think the Muslims understand it very well, and they call it "zuhd." Asceticism isn't abandoning everything and living in a cave or temple, it is reaching a point where nothing of this world owns you. Your hunger, sexuality, and greed have no power to negatively influence you.

I've spent some lives (seemingly wasted to the inexperienced) where I would focus on one limb, the next life another limb and so on, which is just one example of an individual consciousness learning control over body as well as mind. Some lives I've spent purposefully "crazy" so as to acquire insight into realities unknown to the timid. All awarenesses are as rays of light from a star in possession of their own rail to "salvation," though they may know it not. Personally, I choose not to ride the rails of false prophets and/or Gurus. These character-types feed off of the ignorant to satiate illusory ego's, like Alan Watts, Yogananda, and so many others that are unknown to "modern minds." If you can't verify your "past" lives with family members that are still living today, you really have no business dispensing your distorted brand of "wisdom." Also, beware of an awareness going by the initials "J.C.," it's not what you think it is!
