Jake i appreciate you posting this video it shows that no matter how well trained you can be in any martial art the best self defense, in the right situation, knowing that it will not leave any one else in harm is to stay away and call for help... You are truly admired Jake.

Either way, it's good to hear that you're safe, as a BJJ practitioner, we learn how to do self defense techniques which is great but in reality do I wanna take that chance and use it? In my opinion it would be a last resort. Much respect jake 👍

I believe you did the right thing for the situation you were in.. You had the opportunity to stay away from a potential deadly situation and were able to call the cops.. I wold of done the same except for one part i would of done differently.. Be it that you drove 25 min around area, caution the people around there to be careful. I had a similar situation many years back and the first thing that came to mind was stay away call for help..

It's the police job to take care of this sort of situation. As a good citizen you did the most you could do.

U should throw the guy something like a rock or brick A simple intimidation could make the guy runaway If he doesnt bait him to a brighter more crowded place and fight with him there, get ur own weapon too, anything u can find Guys like that cant be let loose man

I'm honestly surprised by the fact that police didn't respond to the call for help from civilian. Even if it's a lie. This almost never happens in Japan. They go no matter what, even when they know that its a troll.

Jake, the problem are the laws. The other guy brandished a weapon other than a firearm in a rude or threatening manner. This is a violation of California Penal Code 417(a). This is a misdemeanor. There are only about a dozen misdemeanors in the state of California in which a law enforcement officer can make an arrest without actually witnessing the crime (Example: Domestic Violence, DUI, etc). The only other way to make an arrest for 417, is for you to be a victim and advise the police that you would like to essentially make a citizens arrest for the misdemeanor that occurred in YOUR presence. If you're on the phone with 911 saying, yeah there is a guy with a knife, but I don't want to be a victim. Then the police are essentially going to treat it like a routine call and queue it in line with all the other pending calls. If anything, dispatchers should have clarified with you if you wanted to actually be the victim of a crime, or if your just reporting this as a good citizen.

#1. I think you did the right thing. #2. Based on 911 and PD response...just reinforces that YOU are your first responder.

you should have said the guy was black. they would have shown up... but probably would have shot the guy. the slow response time and possible no show are what's to be expected from state services, there's no reason for them to show up. they get paid regardless of the outcome. very very unfortunate situation you found yourself in. good to hear that you're safe. take care
