Crazy Flexible 3D Printed T-shirt Design

I start off in Adobe Illustrator and export a random image as a SVG file. The file is later imported
to a CAD software (Fusion 360), we are now able to extrude our object in the photo. The extrusion
basically means we just gave the object depth, and is now possible to be 3D printed. I exported the extruded
object to my slicer (Simplify3D) in order to prepare it to be printed.
A t-shirt is placed on the bed of the 3D printer and by adjusting the settings for the printer it is
able to print a flexible plastic, also called filament, onto the t-shirt. The flexible filament survived the
washing machine, something PLA did not! This is great news because it means I can basically print any picture or
any object onto a t-shirt and it will last for quite a while. I will update you of the durability as time passes.

I think the fabric the t-shirt is made out of may be quite important. I suspect you will get better adhesion with a synthetic blend with cotton. Since the synthetic part is essentially plastic and maybe they will melt slightly and bond to the filament. Some experimentation with different fabric blends, giving them several cycles through the wash to see which adheres the best, bed temperatures, extrusion temperatures is in order.

Slic3r has an option "Avoid crossing perimeters", which stops the print-head from travelling over your clean lines and leaving goop everywhere. You may be able to find similar options in your slicer of choice.

Neat. I used to print t-shirts, golf shirts, caps with plastisol transfers and later, direct screen printing so I could expand into small signs. IIRC plastisol requires 325 degrees F, while Ninjaflex is 235 F. But if you could 3D print on to heat transfer paper, you could examine it for defects and jumps and pick them off with a blade and forceps. But then you'd still need to iron the transfer down into the shirt - which is good because part of the bonding into the fabric is the pressure the iron applies to the ink/plastic while it's in the fluid state.

It might be worth looking into spraying the shirt with a little bit of diluted acetone or alcohol, that way the filament dissolves a little bit and slightly absorbs/fuses into the material better.

I wonder how much stronger it would be if you were to iron the plastic into the shirt through a sheet of parchment paper. That might help prevent the very slight peeling of the edges on the lion's mane after the wash.

If it has not already been covered, I believe the thin white layer at the end turned gray due to "bleeding" or dye migration from your shirt. I bet your shirt has some % of polyester in it which is a typical culprit in dye migration.

Seems like a case for someone making specialty filament just for textile printing. Or possibly a specialty chemical prep that helps the fabric accept the print. If you can get a really aggressive penetration it presents possibilities for more of a 3D design printed on the fabric. Otherwise what you're doing isn't a lot different than screen printing.

for the thin designs try to enable the setting to prevent crossing the outline of the model and set the value really high like 1000. that should keep it from crossing the empty spaces and leaving crap all over the design.

Try getting parchment paper in the baking section...then lay over the printed part and iron it to get the print inside the fabric...thin layer then redo...maybe reprint another layer ontop of it...maybe will survive long time..

I have an idea, print the design on a wooden or glass surface, clean it up if you need to, after that put the shirt over it and iron it with an iron hot enough to melt the filament.

Nah, I've done similar stuff before. If you tighten and place the shirt correctly, everything should be fine.

Rihards Rožāns I was thinking similar, but with using an iron. Print it on a shirt, then use the paper for pearler beads to between the shirt one iron. Start with the lowest heat setting. But it all depends in if it is not well fused into the fabric already.

Try using the "Avoid crossing perimeters" settings, and completely disabling retraction to solve any stringing issue. BTW I really love the style of your video. I'm sure other people noticed the efforts as well. The transitions are awesome. Keep up the good work!

Der bessere Spieler Look under Travel for "Combing Mode". I set it on "All". Not really sure what the No Skin option does. Setting on All seems to work fine. This is available in Cura 2.6.2. Not sure about older versions. Also, if you don't see the option you might have to click the little gear icon to enable the option (if you've used Cura much, you should know this).

very interesting and a great idea ! (reminds me of the old 3D printer days when new things would be found every week!). you might get different results with different tshirts, as you get 100% cotton shirts then you get polyester shirts which have a % of plastic in them. this would get better results i dare say. but very interested might have a go my self at some point

Hey Simon - thanks for responding to those of us with the torches and pitchforks regarding the flex filament. You blew my mind using a STOCK CR-10 to do this...please share the machine settings to get Ninjaflex successfully through a CR-10 extruder. Also love the lion design....either sell it (Ninjaflex, of course) or share the design please. Nice vid production, by the way.
