Adam, we just helped rescue two German Shorthair pointer males in an emergency situation. We live in Northern New England. They are healthy, but really need new homes. The owner was homeless and surrendered his boys for their sake. Because of the owner's situation we don't have enough info to give to a German Shorthair Pointer rescue group and we're a bit at an impasse. Any ideas?

We have an 8 year old pointer/lab mix and he really is the best dog ever. He's a little lower energy than a typical GSP but still much higher energy than a lab. He points, he loves to chase the ball, and he's very silly. He has the big chest of a GSP but the hind end of a lab, so he walks a little funny. Overall he's very sweet and protective. We would strongly consider getting a GSP or another mix in the future, they're excellent dogs. One thing nobody ever talks about is how much personality GSP and mixes have. Booker is very attached to his toys and won't sleep unless he has his 'lizard', which he's had since he was a puppy and has never destroyed. He also loves to cuddle and thinks he's much smaller than he is when it comes to lap time. He's around 70ish pounds.

For instance, I had an elderly lab mix that could no longer get into the bathtub. At that point, I started taking him to the groomer for a bath during the winter. During the summer, I hosed him off in the backyard, which he absolutely loved. Same principle goes for older or injured owners: sometimes a pro has the equipment to help bathe a dog when the owner can't.

I grew up with several german shorthairs- each and every one was basically a sausage full of energy! They were definitely ones to get into trouble if you didn't give them enough stimulation and exercise, and they had an absolutely ridiculous amount of energy. Even as they got older, they kept that same energy. I miss the first two we had (Sadie and Emma), but that just means I'll have to give more love to the newest puppy, Tia : )

We had a German Shorthair in the past. We are not hunters, but we got her because she had nowhere else to go. She was a great dog, but I will tell you all now. She was by far the most strong willed dog I have ever had, and I have Bulldogs now. So that's saying something. If there was something she wanted, she was going to find a way to get it. Once, she even found out how to unlatch the smoker so she could steal all the fish inside. They are a very intelligent, and energetic breed. But I always thought that will of hers was part of her charm.

“Crazy” is as synonymous with GSPs as “Stubborn” is to huskies

Then you haven't met a German Jagdterrier. They're completely mental, but really fun. Just count all your fingers after you met one..

Fun fact. In french, they're called Braque Allemand and there's an old french expression that says "fou braque" to designate extra crazy.

Hell yeah... the German hunting dog breeds are just as "crazy" as we Germans :))

I have a gsp, she has basically no energy, she doesn’t play fetch, she just lays around, but she is the most loving and caring dog I’ve ever met

I had a Pointer and he was wonderful. So well trained and willing to put up with anything. Did enjoy taking walks with me, the big baby.

My sister has a lab mixed with a pointer and let me tell you she is the most fabulous girl ever. She knows many commands and it so well behaved, you don’t even have to tell her to leave it, she won’t take it until you say she can. She is super energetic and her favourite thing in the whole world is her ball. She loves it to death. She could go on forever she has such endless energy and is very good with the other kids in our house. She is protective but friendly and she is such a gorgeous dog. She has the body type of a pointer but with more of a labish face, she’s dark brown and has these stunning and bright butterscotch coloured eyes. She is very attached to her mom and follows her everywhere but she loves the rest of us too. Her name is Piper and she is the best girl. ( okay I’m done ranting for now, just wanted to appreciate our special pup ).

I loved my GSP. So much energy. She always made me laugh. Never off duty. At 2 am, she'd be standing under a tree, staring at the birds who went to bed lol. I miss her

I love that she goes in depth describing each breed. I'm not a dog owner, but if I decide to get one, I want to make sure I get the exact right breed for me and my family, and this helps! I don't want to choose based on which ones I think are the cutest, but the one that will be happiest with my family's personality.

What a handsome man and a beautiful breed! I am mentally applauding the owners for being such amazing role models. RIP to their 3 munchkins.

Another reason for the name Pointer comes from their extremely pointy elbows that they are not afraid to use if you are taking too long to wake up in the morning. One of those to the ribs and you are not going back to sleep anytime soon.

😄Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise; your Pointer knows that 😂

My childhood dog was a GSP, an absolute lunatic (first of her litter, of course)! Had the biggest personality, needed 3 long off-leash walks a day, and loved us more than anything. I’ll always see GSP’s fondly because of Cali 🥺💕
@M3thodbombz Жыл бұрын
Little late to the party but that’s our GSP. 3 off leash walks a day. And they’re not walks to be honest. He runs through the desert in the morning, fetch for 1 hour at the park, and then his nightly walk at another park. He’ll sleep for 2 hours in between each of those exercise routines. Some days he’ll be mellow, other days he won’t let up.

My brother was 'gifted' with an unwanted Pointer. This was during the Off Hunting season, and brother actually had to give that dog A STEEL BELTED RADIAL TIRE TO DESTROY. And they dog did destroy that tire.

I also use the Zoom Groom on our shorthair. I find it’s best to do this at least once a week since those little hairs stick to everything! Great video! Thanks for highlighting this wonderful breed!

I'm not a dog owner, but your comments regarding this breed needing adequate exercise resonates. Having bought the house of friends and owners of a pointer, the entire irrigation system needed replacing and every accessible timber door and window was chewed into near oblivion. Gave me two years worth of repair.

my 10 year old dog, ruby, is a GSP. she’s the sweetest thing ever, a little ball of energy (they do mellow out a little eventually), and is all muscle. that dog is so fast and all she ever wants to do is run. one revision, however-“mild shedding” is putting it lightly
@namariie31842 жыл бұрын
I have a pointer mix as a service dog, and can definitely agree with the energy! Keeping up with her is how I got into running and hiking as frequently as I do. She points, tries to play with anything dog-sized (including groundhogs and feral cats), and tends to adopt anyone who spends more than 5 minutes in her presence. She loves working and if she didn't have a job I think she'd find one! I love her to pieces.
