In Early February 2000, when the Ivory Coast unexpectedly tumbled out of the African Nations Cup at the first hurdle, the military junta took the extraordinary step of detaining the entire squad at a military training camp.
Since staging this West African country's first military coup last Dec. 24, the army has not shied away from trying on new roles besides politics. In this case it decided to meddle into footballing affairs to teach the players “a civic lesson” because they had shown “indicipline,”.
This is the bizarre story of the Ivorian National Football team who were detained by the Junta after their dismall performance at the 2000 AFCON tournament.

They way we love football in Africa, it's almost self-abuse sometimes.

If only we would give that same energy towards fighting corruption and poverty maybe things would be better 🤷🏿‍♂️

Although I understand that losing a match is terrible and having a low-effort performance is unacceptable, I think that was a bit much. Thankfully, no other national leaders in Africa got any ideas from that… right? But, hey, at least nobody was seriously injured. And at least that it wasn’t the craziest involvement of politics in football matches. That title goes to the Football War of 1969.

Incredible and insane story. It shows how much political 'leaders'' in Africa are behaving like children in the face of the world, even worse, like the monsters that they are. How can football be a national priority when the majority of your population suffers on many fronts and the country performance indicators are amongst the lowest of the planet, year after year ??? What a damn shame. And I say this as a football fan.

I totally can't believe this actually happened 😮! I think the problem is that people conflate loss of national football team with "loss of country pride" and that is not at all the case! A country loses it's pride when there's corruption, poor governance, unnecessary war driven by ethnic tension, etc...I have no problem with funny banter after a team loses (some of the AFCON2023 memes have been hilarious!😂), but football is supposed to be fun and unifying...and players dedicate their lives to the game with African players often facing so much abuse overseas...we need to remember that football players are just people too❤

Irony : The same said Bagbo refused to leave power when he lost and had to be dragged out of presidential palace wearing undergarments. He never wanted to changed the lifes of his people , but wanted to enjoy the same priviledges as his predecessor.

😮 I still remember it like it was yesterday,I was 16 yrs of age,I Heard it on our national radio, but I didn't take it seriously, because the DJ just narrated it jokingly saying they were taken from the flight then made to jogg after getting off the plane from afcon 2000,as they were told that the military junta noticed that during Afcon they were unfit,I had no idea in the world that it was this serious, shame to the players,I feel sorry for them 🙆

Well done officers signs of seroiusnes. Because as being cynotgd know what machines are on the field and any decptoconvrhat call the self a football player wanting to represent the nation must be prepared yo fir on the field of heot she must got the team otherwise sign a of poor effort or continues error or failure is a sign of betrayal and reception. If Sierra Leone police or military decide to do this to our national team who are big ubdenderperfirmers I am sure Sierra Leone citizens would whole heartedly support the mood an may even demand the rest of civil servants government ministera and even other deceptive members of the public. Don't they know we live live by death before betrayal principles..we should make this African culture all over africa and beyond. Football is a much loved sport in africa and footballers deception is an international be betrayal of the state and citizens they claim to represent bri vest agreable elephants cest super. Magnifier ce tees bon

All this story tells me is that we are too afraid of addressing the elephant in the room in our respective countries. This said elephant is happy to kill you which is the main reason for the fear. If you live in a functioning African country this post is not for you.
