Fun animal fact: Spiders have very large brains for their size, some spiders have brains that take up 80% of their body. Spider brains can also take on very interesting shapes, existing not only in the spiders head, but spilling into other body cavities and legs. These large brains are important for spiders for executing activities like web building or hunting.

There's exactly two confirmed examples of a child dying from Halloween candy poisoning. One was targetted to try and claim insurance policies on his kids, the other was where a drug dealer had dropped a dose on the carpet and his kid accidentally ate it along with the candy he was eating.

Every confirmed case has been the parents drugging their kids to pull off a nefarious scheme, an accident(prank gone wrong between family/friends), or apparently leaving drugs in the floor (I had actually not heard about that one, but that has more to do with addiction/drug abuse than tampering with Halloween candy). It’s a complete myth that children have died from drugs, razor blades, or needles being given to them while trick or treating. Obviously children shouldn’t be harmed at all, but the point is “stranger danger” misses the fact that most crimes against children are committed by someone close to to them, not strangers.

Parents should NEVER sell their children's plushies. ESPECIALLY if that child is being bullied or has been through your divorce or was abused. When it comes to trauma, even a dirty old plushie is not just a best friend to a kid, it is their therapist when they need to talk about what's hurting them, it is the one who gives them hugs when they feel like the world is falling apart, that plushie is the one who stands beside them when they feel alone in life, the one person who NEVER judges them and who ALWAYS keeps their secrets. A plushie can help a child survive long enough to actually get help with their mental health and for their trauma. I'm 25 and I know I wouldn't have made it this far without my plushie, and now I'm finally getting the help I need, and I never have to be judged for my problems, my flaws, my identity. The world is hard and scary, let children keep something soft and comforting to help them through it.

As a Wiccan who worked at Joann's, I love the visibility of all the Ouija board items. So to that Karen I say, "If it bothers you so much, go shop at Hobby Lobby." I worked there too and it was REALLY weird for me. I kept real quiet about my religion at work. Not that they could technically do anything, but they were good at sneaky. One of my supervisors that was open about her relationship with her female partner just suddenly wasn't there anymore, despite being really good at her job.

Oh yea, Hobby Lobby is really bad about sneaky discrimination, especially for sexuality/gender identity and religion. We had an assistant manager who was extremely abusive towards the cashiers, rude to customers, and just all around horrible at her job, and she never even got written up. But they hired another assistant manager who was super sweet and really good at her job, but one day she casually mentioned that she had a girlfriend and a couple days later she was fired for “performance issues.” Needless to say I remained firmly inside the closet during my time working there.

Yeah... I totally agree about the gender identity/sexuality and religion discrimination. As a demi-pansexual semi-practicing pagan (I'm still learning a LOT) if my parents ever give me a gift card for Hobby Lobby (they're conservative Christians who are homophobic - even though I'm pretty sure my mother is closeted bi), I use it as my "eff you" and I usually buy bottles and things that I would use for things like moon water and cleansing sprays and ritual candles... Besides it was my parents' money that bought it, not mine. I personally only use my own money as a last resort and I only go to H.L. if it's an absolute last resort... The case about the disabled women, who is sued for exposing her airbnb guests to her disability is even worse, than you think. The guests didn't want to use her door bell, because it has a sign, saying she takes a bit longer, because of her disability. When you use the door bell, she has an alarm at hand, so she knows, someone is at the door. She contacted the guests, where they were. They were in front of her house, not using the bell. After she let them in, they began to complain, that they should have been warned, that she is disabled. They still checked in, because a hotel would have been much more expensive, she takes a pretty low amount per night. She didn't really feel save with them, so she contacted airbnb. Was told someone would contact her, but because she is disabled, she was not contacted right away, because that team wasn't available at that time. She was told, to stay away from the guests, so she basically spend her evening in her own kitchen, that's were she started her tiktok account and told the story. It took days for the airbnb team to contact her, but was told, she should just refund them. Then came the review. Basically a dozens of points long list of thing they claim to be disability aids and that triggered them! She was then supposed to argue with each complain. It were ridiculous things, like the size of the towel, the mini fridge in their room, some lights. After everything that happened, they decided to sue her, because they claim, because they were exposed to her disability, they have trauma , which needs extensive treatment. They claim, they couldn't work anymore because of that (the irony, that they claim, that they are now basically disabled, was lost on them). Oh and they insulted her even more, saying, as disabled person, she should not be able to have a house and run a business. The women has Huntington's disease. She will die young. But as long as she can do stuff, she will. Btw. this happened in Ireland, not the US!

People's pets are sadly shot for even less reasons far more often than one realizes. 😞 I worked at an animal hospital. The worst non-fatal case that comes to mind was a baby kitten, about half grown only, who had taken to scaling the backyard fence and walking up and down the top rail of it. She just liked climbing and having a good view of the whole backyard. The next door neighbor shot her for it. He didn't have pets, she never actually went over the fence into his yard, he just saw her prancing back and forth on the fence and shot her. Thankfully her parents saw her fall, knew she was injured immediately, and brought her in clinging to life wrapped in a blood soaked towel. She was rushed into surgery and hospitalized for a week or two, and she survived. She did, however, lose her front left leg all the way up at the shoulder and went home as a tripod kitty. Last I heard, she'd taught herself to balance on her three legs on the bottom rung of the barstools in their kitchen, meaning she hadn't lost her passion for climbing and was working her way up to a higher tightrope again. I wish I knew what happened to the neighbor; all I know is that they did have him arrested. It's ridiculous the things people do out of sheer cruelty. I'm glad my husky (pictured) has a nub instead of a tail, specifically so people won't accuse her of being a wolf. Lots of people claim they have wolf hybrids that are really just Huskies lol, out of my entire patient population, only one of them was an ACTUAL Timberwolf mix, and it was VERY obvious. 😳 once you met him, it was easy to see that the others were not hybrids haha. He was a sweetie though!

Had a lady who's room hadn't been cleaned before she checked in, and was kicked out for complaining. When she spoke to me, she was very polite, and even though she was clearly agitated about the situation, she made sure not to take it out on me. She even expressed concern because she didn't want me to feel like she was yelling at me, and I told her I understood. From what she told me, it sounded like the person at the front desk was treating her like a typical Karen, but the way she described the room to me made it clear she was being a Karen. No-one at the time was keeping an exact count. The best estimate we have is that it killed around 40-50% of the population of Europe. However, there were wide regional variations. Yes, some places experienced mortality rates of up to 80%; other places were less effected. Poland and Milan were two regions that were impacted relatively "lightly." There has been much debate about why. The best guess about Poland is that at the time it was heavily forested and sparsely populated, meaning that it was harder for the virus to spread. Also, Poland had a lower-than-average rat population for some reason. In the case of Milan, it was due to extreme preventative measures by its absolute ruler, Luchino Visconti. He pretty much closed the city to outsiders, and was not above walling up infected houses form the outside. Had he been alive today, he would've had anti-vaxxers shot on sight.

Dude, when I lived in Ohio there was a little old man at the farmer's market that would sell the best damn apples I ever had. They were pink with a delicately sweet, slightly starchy taste and had the most wonderfully crisp flesh. My only regret was never learning what kind of heritage apple it was to try to get a tree for myself one day. Having an orchard to just walk to with your kids to share that experience with would be amazing. What would be more amazing is for people to actually understand and respect where the hell their food comes from. Dirty apples, indeed!

The one about the mom selling her kid's plushies actually managed to fill me with rage. I have some plushies that I have had since I was as young as 3, I am turning 37 in January. I did not get to own much that truly felt like mine as a kid. So, those plushies mean a lot to me. I have a massive mountain of plushies in my home office that act as a part of a sensory corner I have for when I get overwhelmed due to my mental health conditions and neurodivergence. My boyfriend sometimes gets irked when I buy stuff that he doesn't think is necessary, but he leaves my plushies alone because he knows they help me a lot. Also, I would totally leave him if I came home and found out he'd sold them behind my back.

I was honestly flabbergasted. To be so nonchalant about the death of a person is baffling to me. Regardless if I know them or not they were living and breathing and had a life and family. We shouldnt have to correlate things like this back to our own families just to make people see that others shouldn't die from a virus that is mostly preventable.

I've had a very similar discussion with my dad, with him being pissed off about how they ruined the economy for no reason and didn't need to shut stuff down and everyone he knows that's had COVID didn't have it that bad and he doesn't know anyone that died of it. First off, my mom had it, it lasted two full weeks, and she had it pretty bad. Not hospitalization bad, but still. My sister had it and, while not as bad, it was still the worst she's dealt with. I had it and got lucky, it was more like allergies for me. Same with when he got it (surprisingly it hit everyone but him, then a month later only hit him). Not to mention I lost a friend to COVID. Not someone I was very close to, but a friend nonetheless, and the brother of a different friend. He's just pissed off because a "two week lockdown" lasted longer than that and he doesn't see the point. The lockdown lasted longer than stated because, on top of it being underestimated how long it should have been in the first place, people refused to listen to it. I'm just glad he isn't an anti-masker or anti-vaxx.

A 5% mortality rate is huge when a disease has such a high r rate! There's a surgery mum went through when she was younger, with a 50% chance she'd lose her hearing (which she did), but the modern day equivalent has a 15% rate of a second surgery being needed, and the chance of going deaf is so small it isn't counted as a % risk anymore. To me, a 15% chance of needing a second surgery is too high, but to most people it isn't. That is, until you put it into the context that this is a cancer removal surgery. Context matters. You can't just say 5% death is low without giving a context to how many people are infected per unit time, and how many people would die per day. 5% mortality in a case where only 100 people are infected per year is good, but 5% mortality in a case where millions are? Less good

This cultural meme of poisoned and tampered with Halloween candy has been going around forever. But the truth is that there's never been any good evidence of it being a problem. The one notable documented time it actually happened was a father who poisoned his own child's Halloween candy for insurance. It's similar to the paranoia about strangers abducting kids even though the vast majority of child abductions are done by someone the child knows, usually a non-custodial parent.

There were several cases of deaths that were thought to be from poisoned Candy due to the child having eaten candy earlier or candy being found near the body. There was also one case that did involve poisoned candy, though it was only tangentially related to Halloween. At a Halloween party, a young woman and a popular man were voted to be or played a role as “Halloween Queen and King”/“Mr. and Mrs. Halloween”/some other similar title. Apparently, some admirer of the man became jealous of the young woman, and tried to kill her by sending her a box of Christmas chocolates with some rather unappetizing soft centers- namely, poison. Luckily, the young woman noticed that there was suspicious goo oozing out of the treats, and did not consume any.

While there have been cases of people accidentally handing out marijuana edibles and lots of cases of parents either trying to harm their own children or faking something for attention, there are no known actual cases of someone trying to poison random kids on Halloween.

Uhm, there is a very broad definition of disability. That way you can include there literally any person with non-ideal health. Which means literally any person. In reality disability in most countries has to be legally established, and most health problems are not disabilities per se. In regards of sight, full disability is established when sight measure is less than 0.04, and partial disability when it's less than 0.1

Not all but most people who need glasses can't properly function without their medical equipment. As a former AYSO referee (I was 14), parents are WILD about this stuff. I literally had to throw a kid out of a game because his dad was egging him on to do league illegal moves (like slide tackles). He started screaming at me until the coaches made him leave me alone. This was on a US military institution and I was a teenager reffing for an under 8 game. This kid was literally like 7 years old. The example this dad was setting was just terrible. The coaches actually thanked me after the game for carding the kid because they had tried repeatedly to get the dad to stop coaching his kid to break the rules, but no one had straight up tossed the kid out of the game for it.

The Burger Karen actually reminded me of the time i worked at this workshop for young unemployed people In their kitchen. We made breakfast, lunch and sandwiches. One Day, one of the adults that worked there wanted a meatfree sandwich. We did make those as well as the ones that had meat, because we knew that not everyone eats meat. We had them both available on the counter but she took the onlyone with meat and complained that she doesn't want meat. We did tell her that there is one next to it without meat. She could clearly see it but she demanded that we take the meat of of her sandwich. We could have said no and given her one without meat, but there was a line of hungry teenagers behind her so we took the sandwich and removed the meat. Since that day we started to hate working there. Teenagers were all cool with us.

One of our professors was the local EMS (a governmental position, been held by a medical dr.), he took a few of us on public meetings with citizens to get to know the system we may work in. One time there was a neighbourhood meeting about a new firestation beeing built closer to a main road - which allwed for a larger beeing serviced in the same time (better driving routes). A few people complained about it beeing to noisy should there be the exit of the station and the sirens. He, just pulled out a piece of paper and aked everybody who did not want the change of the firestation. A few actually signed (those poos sobs). After they signed he declared, that with the addresses and the name, he'd put them in the dispatch computer as not wanting propt services (somethign which doesn't exist and legaly could not stand - but it was funny nontheless). My own experience with a Karen was in a sushi restaurant. She was a friend of a friend, and we were there having dinner. She never had eaten sushi before and decided to order the "sampling menu", a bit of every kind of sushi they served, without really knowing what she was getting into. I don't have a problem with that, if one is adventurous and wants to try something new, as long as they know that maybe they're not going to like it, and it would be nobody's fault. But when her order arrived she started complaining that some of the food was undercooked (because, you know, sushi), and demanding the waiter to take it away and "get it done" (as if the sashimi were raw because the cooks neglected to cook it properly). She made such a fuss that the manager let her choose a dish from the fried rice menu for free. I understand that decision, they preferred to lose a bit of money, than risk losing the business of the repeat customers that made up the rest of the table by making a worse scene, but she made the rest of us feel embarassed by association and the fact that she got away with and was even rewarded for her ignorance and obnoxiousness didn't sit right with me.
