That whole "gay penguins adopt abandoned babies" argument is the one my Christian mother gives to other homophobes. She straight up has overpopulation and foster care statistics at the ready at all times to prove why "god creates gay people for a reason and his plan is always right."

Heck, that could even be why some of the genetic forms in humans persist so well. What mom doesn't want a gay brother to help. What dad doesn't want gay brother to help on the farm? Exactly, very helpful to household management.

@Wolf-dog Cat-dog 2.0 yes, it's foul. It stopped being a thing decades ago, but it WAS a thing. I mean, I guess if you apply the logic that women MUST NOT become pregnant out of wedlock and that it might be advantageous for at least one of you to know what you're doing on your wedding night, you can see why people might have approved at the time, but let's all be glad it's not that time any more.

@Wolf-dog Cat-dog 2.0 yep. It was not a good time for women. There are places in Africa now where men go to sex workers but refuse to use condoms, HIV is rife and the sex workers are outcasts when they get it, because of their "dirty" lifestyle. There is and was a lot of hypocrisy about women's sexuality. Think about the rhetoric around single mothers (bad, irresponsible people, even though they aren't the one who abandoned a child) and lesbians (not subject to the same aggressive criticism and disgust as gay men, because nobody cares what two women do together). I'm 45 and can see a lot of improvements just in my lifetime, but Ut's going to take a while for it all to stop.

It's not really creepy unless you make it so. An interesting thing to think about regarding the "rise of LGBTQ+ percentages" is, much like Click said, related to general acceptance. There's historical precedence for this too: take a look at the persecution of left-handedness and what happened to the percentage of people identifying as left-handed after humans stopped holding such a strong social stigma against it.

It's scary how my parents used the same argument against homosexuality at one point
@John_Weiss

The arguments against being trans _are_ the same arguments against being gay or lesbian, just with a couple of the words changed. And those same arguments are themselves recycled from other past attacks on minority groups. Back in the 1990s, when I was in grad school, I once said to my roommate at the time, "If you took everything they were saying about us gay people and replaced, 'ho-mo-sekshal' with 'black', they'd never get away with it." My roommate replied, "Where do you think they got all of it from? It's actually the same racist language they were saying back in the 1960s, but they've done what you said: replaced 'black' with 'gay'." That particular roommate was about 10 years older than me and grew up in/escaped from North Carolina. So he was around to hear that very language. That's the thing with bigots: They're not original, and will reuse the same tired old tropes and slurs and hate-propaganda that they used with their previous target when they go after a new victim.

@@wesleytheshepherd3217 as a fellow north Carolinian I agree.... Most of the people who are bashed for their own personal beliefs and opinions on the PRIVATE lives of others are usually the same bigots who complain about everything else.... Agreeing with book burning And cancel culture and extremely vocal & judgemental on most subjects where personal private lives aren't hurting anyone including themselves but they have problems with change.... Again the only people who are being treated poorly are those miniscule groups of people who are speaking of how the Bible says something is wrong while actively being terrible horrible people who expect to be forgiven for any discretion they make no matter how small or large or how miserable others are directly from the consequences of these people while also screeching About how much God hates some people & totally twisting perverting & making up scripture and scripture message meanings as a way to further insult shame and call out others while also changing up what they say to mask and allow all of their own faults.... There's nothing we are supposed to be judging others against outside of the laws of our specific states and countries And we are all supposed to be showing grace to ourselves and our own shortcomings as well as applying the same grace we allow ourselves unto others..... Any changes or alterations of the Bible is wrong. Twisting perverting rearranging and remixing the Bible and then knowingly spreading incorrect scriptures messages verses and commandments in order to uplift yourself while putting down others in any way is clearly going against everything that it teaches & I can only pray that the future continues to have the people who are going to drag me down & the people who are happily coming into my life only to take me away from the path I work hard to walk with the Lord are as obviously you untrustworthy sneaky liars whom I saw Immediately were not people who I should have allowed to enter my world in any way and I pray that I can have the same discernment and see what they are without having any time wasted on them and they not have any other ideas for how to drag me or any of my family down A path they can't come back from.

the little bump is actually a layer of fat that both acts as a protection around your organs but also is just typically caused by hormones or diet. Majority of the time though you can’t always fix it . It appears during puberty and is absolutely natural, if a woman tries hard enough to get rid of it she could literally die. The sheer amount of people who don't know this scares me so much, i had an eating disorder and nearly died trying to get rid of that little bump only to find out years later that it’s normal and even healthy to be there smh.

No, it's a variable hormonal response. Yes, it's a fat distribution thing, but it's hormonal, people born without a uterus who have higher estrogen/progesterone and lower testosterone frequently develop it, but those who don't do not die. Trans women often gain it when they transition hormonally, trans men often lose it when they transition hormonally even if the trans man still has a uterus (that is not even remotely fatal). And some cis women who aren't intersex just don't have it either, they also don't die, it's just the way the body is built and how it responds to hormones has a lot of variety. It's more equivalent to whether or not you grow large breasts (though that's not reversible from hormonal changes once they've grown), trying to exercise/diet away large breasts isn't going to work and can cause harm if done to excess, but people who naturally have small breasts aren't going to die from that either. Common and universally necessary aren't the same thing.

simple actually, 2 people having consensual fun, and marrying each other of their own free will, harms no one; not themselves, not each other, and no one else. murder hurts someone other than yourself, and drugs theoretically are illegal because they are dangerous to your own health. of course, there's other underlying sociopolitical reasons as to why certain drugs are legal and others aren't, which don't actually correspond to relative health risk, but that's more complicated than the explanation requires.

I have to tell students that it's fine to not know because that's why you take the class. You're there so you can know what you don't already.

About the 16yo thing: even if you had the most mature 16 years old to ever exist and a childish adult, there’s still a power imbalance. An adult has access to alcohol, driving (depending on the country a 16yo can’t), total financial independence, has more “respect” socially, and so much more that holds him in a position of power over a teenager. Besides, maturity in behavior isn’t the only development level to count, a 16 years old is still going through puberty, hormones are changing, self esteem is mostly the worst it could be (based on my 16 yo memories and every 16 yo I’ve talked to at the time), the emotions are a train wreck and overall it’s just a very VERY vulnerable stage of life to be. A 16 year old isn’t “mature” for not playing with toys or idk what, she’s still a developing child in what probably the most vulnerable age to be (again, based on what I’ve lived back then)
@t1ff4nyall3n
@t1ff4nyall3n Жыл бұрын
There is also a difference of circumstances, such as abuse. I matured mentally super fast because I strove to perfect my siblings from abusive people in power above us (step-father, some uncles, teachers of select schools, etc.), and had to grow up so fast, I lost my childhood. By the time I was 18, I didn't feel excited to be an adult, because I was already doing many things that were considered adult, just to survive.
@RiveroftheWither
@RiveroftheWither Жыл бұрын
I would agree that 14-16 year olds are some of the most vulnerable to sexual abuse by adults. Mostly because of the awkward crossroads stage of development and life that they're at. Yes, they mature a little faster than boys but they are mentally still a child regardless of what they physically look like. However the thirst for independence, the chemical cocktail that is puberty and how they're raised and treated by the adults around them can make them prone to the manipulations and grooming of an older man that treats them like an adult, that makes them feel more mature than they are. Assuming the poster was a woman, judging from the icon pic, she was either a victim herself and in denial or a man pretending to try and normalize p3døs (spelt weird because KZbin sometimes deletes comments with the real word)

The only adults who are attracted to teenagers are mentally behind and social rejects of the ones their own age. No sane grown adult wants a kid, even a mature one. If they’re in to you, no one else their own age is in to them, and that’s a huge red flag. They will most likely be abusive in some way. It’s not cute, you’re not “special”. It’s gross and completely inappropriate. They are a predator. Do not ever believe them or their love bombing, run away. Public humiliation also helps keep them away from others
@John_Weiss
@John_Weiss Жыл бұрын
@@RiveroftheWither There's also the problem of a lack of what I would call, "the opposite of grooming": teaching kids how to protect themselves from sexual abuse & manipulation _before the hormones hit._ One thing I always point out: For all of human history prior to the 19th Century, childhood _was OVER_ the moment you hit 13-14, which is when all of the traditional coming-of-age-ceremonies in every last culture and religion are. The moment you hit puberty, you were expected to be pulling your weight _as an adult._ And every person was raised with that in mind. You see, brains don't "mature" with clocks or calendars, but with _experience._ Research with zebrafish from a year ago observed changes in their brain-structure _as they learned._ So I now see those "studies" that claim, "ThE bRaIn IsN't MaTuRe UnTiL 27," as _an indictment of widespread bad-parenting_ that is failing to prepare kids for adulthood.   Also remember: Prior to the 20th Century, _if you made it to 13,_ you were _very unlikely to live past 50-60._ [Unless you were an aristocrat or wealthy.] So spending _half of your lifespan_ with a brain that's not "fully mature" is a major biological drawback, and certainly would never have survived natural selection. Question: What's 13*4? Compare that to the pre-Industrial-Era life expectency of 50-60. Now, what's 21*4, compared to _current_ life expectency? Notice the similarity: We seem to have always devoted 25% of our expected lifespans [if we survived childhood] to education and preparation for life as an independent adult. The noted sex- and relationship-advice columnist, Dan Savage, has said this: "We tell kids that they'll have sex when they grow up. What we _should_ be telling them is, 'When you grow up, sex will _have _*_you.'"_* And we really should. That really should be part of comprehensive sex-education and should be done _before_ the hormones hit at puberty. We're really doing a great disservice to future generations and leaving them vulnerable to sexual predators by leaving them ignorant and in the dark.

@@John_Weiss The human brain does not fully mature until about an individual's early to mid 20's (there seems to be some disagreement between researchers). Notice I said brain, not person. Think of the brain like a building. If you are constructing a building so that it can provide shelter, you can build it section by section (otherwise it sits empty until complete). With each section complete, more residents can move in. When the building is completely constructed, the maximum amount of room for residents is reached; no more rooms are added from this point on. The number of residents cannot exceed the space available, but it can have less than maximum capacity. That building can even become damaged, reducing the amount of residential space available. This is similar to the brain and its growth. As a human brain doesn't wait till it reaches full maturity to start use, it clearly begins storing information from the beginning. As the brain grows it allows more room for information to be stored. The brain eventually reaches a point where it can no longer be built up any more (skulls are stingy on real estate), and is thus fully physically mature. The level of emotional/psychological maturity is a different matter entirely, as it grows as the individual gains experience (at least it should). But this mental maturity is always limited by the physical limits of the brain, as a brain not in its most mature state is not operating at its full potential. The physical status of the brain is a hard limit to how much one can be psychologically mature. That is why a toddler can never be considered mature enough for society, as their immature brain simply isn't ready for it. A teen is closer to mental maturity, but their brain is still hard limited. Yes, there is some variance between individuals, as some are more mentally mature than others, but adolescents are still not physically capable of being at full mental maturity. This physical issue is why those who haven't reached full brain maturity should refrain from using cannabis. Cannabis has been shown in laboratory tests to inhibit brain growth. Ever met somebody who "smoked themselves stupid"? This was because they slowed down their brain's rate of growth and development due to habitual cannabis use, thusly resulting in their brain becoming overall less physically mature by the time they reached the stop point in their 20's. It isn't a matter of experience that screws them over from that point on; they just locked themselbed out of being able to achieve full psychological maturity. Your assertion that a brain grows because of experience is the reverse of what is observed, as it is the growth of the brain that allows for the individual to understand and incorporate their experiences, and thereby move towards a state of mental maturity. A middle-aged adult can be mentally mature or immature, while a child is always immature. This supports that physiology is the limiter, not personal experience. And for the (metaphorical) record, this does not mean that an adolescent is unintelligent simply because they are not fully mature mentally or physically. Intellectual capacity is not the same as maturity, as there are many intelligent people that act childish, while some act prudently but have less than average intellect. TL:DR- The human brain is complex, and simply having experiences does not automatically make you mentally mature.

The scribophile one made me internally rant a little since that and "philia" are 2 suffixes I had to learn multiple terms for in the "Sexuality and Society" and "Deviant Behavior" courses I took as part of my Sociology major and Criminology minor in college. In case anyone actually doesn't know this, "phile" is just the suffix used to describe someone who loves whatever the prefix is and "philia" is just the suffix for the act of devoting love to whatever the prefix of the word is. Doesn't even necessarily need to be sexual love. It can just mean that you have a strong love for something. It can be short lived or a lifelong obsession.

Same thing goes for humans, humans only need to get pregnant once and then the will consistently produce breast milk until they stop feeding consistently. That's why you sometimes hear stories of kids in their teens still being breastfed, because mammals can still produce milk as long as needed as long as they keep being milked. Let me get this correct, most of the world has an educational system for their populations. In some places the required length of time to attend these educational systems is shorter and in some longer. However, Click has convinced me with these strolls through various subreddits that are apparently pointing out that no matter how long people went to school of any type, little if anything was learned. I think I'm going to definitely look into that private island and just go hide.
@zakosist
@zakosist Жыл бұрын
But I do think it is a problem that education systems often don't focus enough on what it takes to genuinely learn and remember (as well as what would be actually useful to learn) and its normal to forget or not understand a good amount of it, even for students who try to do well (and I was among them). Its not enough to just throw a bunch of information. It for one needs to be explained in ways that are easily understandable and preferably memorable. And you cant do way too much at once, then some will inevitably be forgotten. And students need to be in a focused state while learning, and its really not always by choice when you cant focus. It takes something we can get there. Eg. focus may be helped by some exercise, enough sleep, proper nutrition so your brain doesn't lack nutrients it needs to work properly, its part of your body like everything else. Getting enough breaks and actual spare time to actually recover in between. As well as taking students mental health problems seriously and try to help. And related to that, also take bullying seriously and make sure you punish the actual bully, not the victim. School is important, but that doesn't mean school is flawless

@@zakosist You have great points across the board. I teach at the collegiate level and during my time there I can state that one of the things students don't really comprehend until they develop the ability to see connections, is that every class they take applies to other areas. Composition is a great example. I can't count how many students I've had who think just because they aren't in a dedicated Composition or other English class their writing won't be critiqued. I know I never realized how my classes intertwined and reinforced each other until I was getting my MA at 25. Learning is hard work and unfortunately, I think sometimes we forget how much work it is. I don't know how many times I've come up for air after writing a seminar paper or after a major test and was starving because using our brains takes energy. So, yes, students need good nutrition, and recognition of any and all hurdles they face when learning (everything from ADHD to dysgraphia, dyscalculia, dyslexia, and other challenges including mental health issues). It's a complex issue and there are no simple answers.

I could only stare. Sure, using the same tap water to make ice cubes will then cause that ice to develop some new kind of chemical/substance that then does some more magic in the water that changes the molecules to something else. Sounds legit. I think he had come to this conclusion simply because cold water tastes better. I just can't fathom the mentality of these people, so confidently spouting nonsense. To be fair I think (and know from experience) most of the time diseases don't really require hospital visits or medication to get well. Sometimes they do, if its serious or long lasting, but most of the time you recover on your own in a relatively short time-span and medicine is more to minimize discomfort if anything. And maybe there is benefit in letting your body recover on its own making it stronger over time (that's not saying Im against healthcare, but maybe its something that shouldn't be overused. And I am for vaccines). I also think its best to generally not burden hospitals unnecessary, so other patients (that may need it more) dont have to wait too long and hospital staff dont get too overwhelmed. Im not really sure at what level of fever you really need to treat it with medication versus letting it pass on its own, and maybe the child itself should be the one to choose (if neither option would endanger them)

@@zakosist Fever over 101F has the potential to do damage (high enough and brain damage ensues). If fever is accompanied by things like sore throat and/or rash that could also be a sign of an infection that could use treatment. Medical treatment also helps reduce long-term complications, recovery from a lot of illnesses without medical intervention is often partial or results in long-term issues. For example, you can survive a streptococcus infection even if it progresses to untreated scarlet fever...but that can lead to heart damage. I had a relative that passed away in their 50s from long-term complications of an infection they recovered from in their teens. It's useful to remember that humans in the wild had a lifespan of maybe 50-60 years, with the vast majority dying long before that (death in infancy is rather common in humans without medical care, like in many other animals). Medical professionals know better than anyone that their resources are limited, best to at least call and talk to a nurse about symptoms and let them decide if the symptoms warrant devoting some of those resources.

While two male penguins cannot reproduce, by raising a chick related to one of them, they effectively pass on a portion of their genetics. For instance, if a male penguin adopts the child of his deceased sister, that child carries about 25% of his DNA. Inclusive fitness is a hell of a thing, and it is central to very important things like social groups and pack behaviour. Herd behaviour benefits a herbivore by reducing the threat to themselves from predators, but pack behaviour theoretically reduces the reproductive fitness of an individual by sharing food. 30:44 I would also think that the Nurse would be wondering, if there's nothing wrong, _then why the hell did you go to the bloody hospital?_

Funnily enough, that may actually be true. I think MinuteEarth or Kurzgesagt did a video on that a while ago, but basically, if we chart out the increasing complexity of life, and trace it back, then life would have had to begin before Earth was formed. If we compare that time frame with the expansion and cooling of the universe after the Big Bang, that point is within the time where the entire universe was a single Goldilocks Zone, allowing for liquid water just about everywhere.

I remember one time I was watching one of your videos (I can’t remember which) and you explained a math problem that was the exact thing I had a test on the next day and still couldn’t figure out. When you explained it I understood it practically immediately. I got a 98%

I hate moon conspiracy people so much. My father-in-law worked on the lunar lander for Apollo 11. And people saying he is a liar is just too much. Especially when you consider how many times over the years he had to prove to some jackass that he did. But after we would get out NASA patches, and photos, and everything else the government let him keep, then they would believe him. So, now that he is 81 years old, paralyzed on one side, and dying of cancer, the thing that hurts him the most are people saying that we didn't even accomplish it. As Hamilton put it: "He was in the room when it happened."

Two can play that game, Clicky! _Ahem..._ The Emotional Support Demon provides no support and actually siphons away your stability! Okay, that hurt to say, I will apologize to my trio of demons once they arrive and buy an extra two Mangos to keep things balanced, so I'll have three of each! Anyways, have a lovely day, you fantastic fellas who fancy this fabulous Swedish boi!

I grew up at the same time Madonna's career exploded and thanks to MTv it was almost impossible for me not to be a fan. As such, I can vouch, yes, that is absolutely her real full name.

@@db_524 I still remember all that noise thost got raised over that live performance. People wanted to be offended so easily back then. I fell for her when Papa Don't Preach came out. I definitely didn't really understand the meaning, but I loved it anyway.
