Thanks Matt, really appreciated! It's a great tool if you need/want MIDI in on the module, been great fun! And yeah, you could totally use the TD-11 out to the Strike with just a midi cable, no extras required. Without extra sounds to access on the Strike over the amount of inputs, the uses might be limited, but if you were having trouble with any triggers on the Strike that work well on the Roland or anything like that it could come in handy. Or even for splitting pad zones without splitter cables - I did that on the TD-17 - used cymbal pads on the TD-50 to trigger splashes I had on the tom rims on the TD-17. Even let me choke them which you wouldn't be able to do with the rim of a tom pad!

The eDrum Workshop when I first bought my strike module I had to use my td-11 midi out to trigger the strike. In my excitement of buying the strike module I forgot/overlooked buying TRS stereo cables. I order a set from pintech and because of virus it took them 2 1/2 months to send them to me. It worked pretty good, however I couldn’t get cymbal choke to work. And I could never get the midi messages working for hihat right. I just ran my only stereo cable to my hi hat cymbal and mono for the HH ft controller. Will be hopefully buying td-27 module in September. Will be keeping my strike for live shows, and Roland Td-27 for home recording. I played it for an hour at GC when they first came out, was immediately sold on it, the sounds, 28 channels of usb audio, digital snare/ride, MIDI I/O, mute groups. I play more electronic music so I dig the “Roland sound” I know not everyone loves it. When I need/want the more realistic sounds the Roland equipment works very good with SSD/SD3. I have the program to help import the multi layer VST sounds to strike module but haven’t gotten that deep yet. 200mb kit limit on strike so it has limitations but can be implemented

Does that mean that I could plug two more cymbals pad in a Roland TM-2 and then the TM2- would be plugged midi out to midi of the Kenton which would be plugged with the USB cable to my TD17 modules ? I bought some pads and cymbals in second hand and then, i had the Idea to build the same drumset that i use in my local. For doing that, i decided to add an external module that i had alrady to my TD17. I'v seen your video and i bought the Kenton. Problem : when i hit pads connected to my older module (yamaha dtxplorer), they are not all responsive. While when i connect one by one all my pads in my td17, they all works.(i precise that all my pads are roland pads) Secondly, i can't edit my drum set with my external pads connected to my older module because they are connected with the same trigger of the td17. On my yamaha module, the input triggers are connected to "tom1, tom2, tom3, snare". When i hit them, they respond, but they are connected with my other pads on the td17 wich are also connected with th inputs "tom1, tom2,tom3,snare" In consequences, if i change for exemple the sound of one pad, an other pad will change also in the same way because they are connected. It's like the td17module doesn't reconized the distinction between both. The two pads are like one pad for the td17 Question : how can i connect my modules together without thiss missing issue ? I tried a lot of possibilities but its always disfunctionnal.. I hope you'll can help me.. ! Sorry for my english i'm french🍷

@TheeDrumWorkshop
@TheeDrumWorkshop 4 жыл бұрын
It will only allow you to create a MIDI in on a module that has MIDI over USB - I don't believe the TD-4 module has a USB port for such a function? It would allow you to do the reverse - use the TD-4's MIDI out to trigger the TD-25. The problem with trying to use something like this for "expansion" is that you don't just gain magic inputs from MIDI connections on most modules - there will only be as many assignable MIDI notes as there are pads on a lot of modules, which is why I specified layering over expansions. It's annoying as they used to feature a "percussion set"on some Roland modules - extra sounds you could access only via MIDI - but they took it out after the TD-30 and it was only on some modules, not all. The best bet in your situation is just plugging extra pads into the TD-4 as "auxiliary" sounds and combining the audio from both modules. Cheers!

F..king interesting... Do you know if you can get positional sensing in Superior drummer connecting the Digital snare directly via USB? If not, then the Roland modules must have some kind of Driver that converst the class compliant into a more specialized USB device. If yes, Then I wonder if the Digital to USB to Roland module To USB to MIDI adds some latency to the path, it would be interesting to know how much.
@TheeDrumWorkshop
@TheeDrumWorkshop 4 жыл бұрын
When I connected the digital pad straight to my PC, it appeared that the positional data wasn't being sent. My assumption is that the calculations for position must be carried out in the module rather than the pad. It's also not quite as sensitive for some reason and the head/rim separation isn't as good either. Some of these things are clearly also helped by the module interpreting the signal - which makes sense, I suppose. The pad won't be able to do all of the work without more processing power in it. I would imagine that the module would add a little latency in this situation then, yeah. I've not tested that so can't confirm but it wouldn't make sense for it not to if its having to process the signal before passing it on through the MIDI port.

Hey Luke, I just would like to confirm before invest some money in the MIDI host. Can I use a TD-6V as slave with a TD-15? I'm familiar with this process using the percussion sets from a TD-9 instead of the TD-15 (which doesn't have the MIDI input) but still not clear for me how would be possible to assign in the TD-15 the sounds I want to specific midi notes from the TD-6V. Thanks a lot! Cheers.
@TheeDrumWorkshop
@TheeDrumWorkshop 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Rodrigo! Just want to clarify exactly what you want to do with this setup. If you're aiming to hook the TD-6V's MIDI out into the TD-15 (via the USB host to create a MIDI in) to trigger the TD-15's sounds with padsfrom the TD-6V, there's not really any benefit to doing this. There are no extra sounds on the TD-15 that can be assigned to incoming MIDI notes like a percussion set, there are only the sounds that are assigned to the trigger inputs. So you can't "expand" a TD-15 by attaching something else via MIDI. There is a "percussion part" feature on the TD-6V which can be triggered via MIDI like the percussion set on the TD-9. I think it's a bit more limited than on other modules, but I only really know this by reading the manual, not from experience. I did another video recently about MIDI capabilities of different modules and covered this on there (hence the manual diving). If you wanted to trigger the "percussion part" of the TD-6V, you wouldn't need a MIDI host for this as the 6V has a MIDI inport. You could send MIDI out of the TD-15 into the 6V to trigger its additional sounds. But of course that would mean the 6V is the main "sound engine" for this setup. There's ways to use sounds from both (have the audio merged but turn down any pads on one module that you only want to send MIDI from) but obviously this adds complexity to the whole situation. Check out my other video if you think it'll help! And hopefully this helps too! Cheers.

Luke, thank you for the lucid explanation of how to use MIDI, the TM-2, and other devices with Roland e-drums. I recently purchased the TD-25 and TM-2; the former for practicing quietly at home so as not to bother my wife, the latter for expanding/layering sounds of the TD-25 as well as triggering my acoustic kit when performing live. Question, just to be clear, I can use my TM-2 with my TD-25 via their MIDI ports for layering, instead of connecting the TM-2 via its audio output into the TD-25 trigger in/auxiliary or crash 2 port? (If this is true I can use the two TD-25 trigger in ports for a crash and additional tom.) Thank you.
@TheeDrumWorkshop
@TheeDrumWorkshop 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! You wouldn't send the TM-2 into the trigger inputs on the TD-25. Trigger inputs aren't audio inputs so you can continue using those two inputs for pads. If you want to use the TM-2 to add layers to your TD-25's sounds, you would connect somewhat like this - TD-25 MIDI out > TM-2 MIDI in TM-2 audio output (either the L&R master or the phones jack) > TD-25 mix in OR both module's audio outputs into to a mixer to combine the audio. You will then need to configure the MIDI notes inside the TM-2 to be the same MIDI notes as those of the pads you wish to layer on the TD-25. So if you wanted to add a layer from the TM-2 to snare head and rim of your TD-25, you would set two of the MIDI notes on your TM-2 to "38" (usually the snare on Roland modules) and "40" (snare rim). You get a total of 4 samples (therefore MIDI notes) per kit on the TM-2 so can only layer up to 4 zones. This sends the MIDI data from what you play on the TD-25 into the TM-2 to trigger it's sounds at the same time as the 25, and combining the audio together (via the mix in or a mixer) is what allows you to "layer" the sounds. Sometimes the "mix in" is referred to as the aux in (as in, the auxiliary audio input), but it's not to be confused with the AUX trigger input. Hope that helps.

@TheeDrumWorkshop
@TheeDrumWorkshop 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! You can't "expand" your TD-17 with another module via MIDI because the TD-17 can only play back sounds that are assigned to the pad zones. MIDI expansion only works when a module is capable of playing additional sounds via MIDI that aren't assigned to a pad. So you can technically connect up the modules the way you explained, but you aren't going to gain anything from doing so. You'd get better results by just connecting extra pads to the TD-11 to trigger its sounds and merging the audio together to hear both modules at once (either by connecting the output of one module to the mix in socket of the other, or by using a small mixer). I made a video about MIDI a while ago that explains why some modules can do MIDI expansion and others can't - kzbin.info/www/bejne/gInJo6SgoLuWgck

@TheeDrumWorkshop
@TheeDrumWorkshop 2 жыл бұрын
Hey! Sorry, I'm not completely clear on exactly what you mean by "expand" in this instance. If your pad sends MIDI out and you connect up to a USB MIDI Host, you can configure one of the TD-17's inputs or pad zones to receive that MIDI number and then the pad will trigger that assigned sound from your TD-17. However, the TD-17 can only trigger sounds that are assigned to a pad zone. So if you've already used up all of the available inputs on your module, you're not going to get any "extra" sounds out of this MIDI pad - you'll only be able to trigger sounds that are already assigned on one of your physical inputs. If you've got a spare input though then you could trigger that.

Hi, very interesting topic! Can I do something similar with a Roland TD-07 and an Spd sx? I know there is no possibility to import custom sounds on this module TD-07, but maybe here is another way to layer sound from the TD-07 without losing dynamics? I've tried with Ableton drum rack but the result is kind of "Machinegun". I don't like the snare drum build-in sounds in the TD-07. Thank u and great content btw.
@TheeDrumWorkshop
@TheeDrumWorkshop 2 жыл бұрын
Hey! You could use the Kenton USB MIDI Host to create a MIDI out port for your TD-07 like the TD-17, yes. Do you mean that you'd want to send MIDI out from the 07 to trigger the SPD-SX then combine the audio of both to create a "layered sound" effect? You can do it, but because you don't have any options to use things like sample fades (like you can on a TD-17 with imported samples) and there is still only one single sample on an SPD-SX per pad, you're still likely to encounter bad dynamics and possible machine gunning, especially at the lower end of the dynamic range. My guess is that you'd get a similar result to the drum rack, unless the drum rack isn't giving you a good volume difference between quiet and loud dynamics.

New guy to the whole electronic drum world. So this is a complicated question, well to me atleast. I have a roland td11 module. Id like to expand this kit by at least 4 inputs. I was thinking of trying to use this Kenton module to allow something like the edrumin 4 to send my trigger signal into the Td11 and use the sound samples inside the td11. Is this even possible? I just didnt want to invest in another module to try and daisy chain inputs into my td11 on top of having to purchase this as well. I hope that wasnt too confusing. Thanks in advance.

@TheeDrumWorkshop 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Unfortunately you won't be able to do this - in order to "expand" a module, it needs to have the inbuilt functionality to allow you to trigger sounds that aren't assigned to pads. The TD-11 doesn't have that function (and neither do most modules these days). It can only trigger sounds that are assigned to the pad zones of the physical inputs. I made a video about MIDI with eDrums a while back that explains this in a fair amount of depth if you're interested in learning more about it - kzbin.info/www/bejne/gInJo6SgoLuWgck

I’ve been trying to figure out what I can do with my td27 module with digital snare and ride and vh10 hihat and my Alesis strike pro SE MODULE and kit. I like the sounds on my Alesis module but I like my Roland td27 with dig. Snare and ride also. Right now I using EzDrummer because don’t like the sounds on my Alesis drum pads from the Roland module which a lot of just could be me not knowing compression and equalizer and room and sfx very well plus I always end up going down that dang rabbit hole and having to reset factory. I’ve think I’ve got my triggers down pretty good though. I did buy me 2 roland cy12c cymbals xtra. Do you think this would work for me and if so, would it do better with a mixer so I can control volume better for one thing? Don’t know much about mixers but I’ve doing some research lately just because of this. Any advice would be so appreciated. You seem to be the only one I’ve found that can relate and talks about all this in more depth.

Hey! I'm not quite sure what you'd need a MIDI Host for in your situation - both the Alesis Strike and TD-27 modules have MIDI in and out ports. A MIDI Host is designed for the purpose "bridging" between a MIDI device with DIN sockets and one that can normally only accept USB MIDI. If you like the sounds on your Alesis Strike but want you keep running the TD-27's pads, you could MIDI link them together (TD-27 MIDI Out to Alesis Strike MIDI In) and only listen to the audio coming from the Alesis Strike. You would need to check that all the MIDI notes on each module line up with each other though, otherwise some pads might be triggering sounds you're not expecting or nothing at all if the notes are different. You would need to spend time going through the modules and the manuals to familiarise yourself with this - I also have a general "MIDI & eDrums" video on the channel that could help. I'm unsure of why you'd need a mixer for this too. If you're not a fan of the Alesis Strike sounds either, it might be best just using the TD-27 with EZ Drummer as you are or having a look into some third party sound packs for the TD-27 like those on my store or the stores of other vendors. This can take the work out of tweaking, or if you're willing to learn but aren't sure where to start, looking through the settings tweaks on these kits can help you understand what is being done with things like EQ, compression, layering etc. Hope that helps in some way.

No, unfortunately not. You can't "add extra pads" to the TD-17 because you can only trigger sounds that are assigned to the pad inputs. I have another video about MIDI that explains why you can do this on some modules but not others if you'd like to know more.

hi there - i'm trying to figure out the best way to capture isolated drum components from the td-17 into my daw (ableton) individually and in time as one simultaneous take, for flexibility in mixing later on. i don't have superior drummer or anything of the sort, so the multi-layered and velocity sensitive onboard sounds would be great to use. the issue though is that there are no individual outputs for each drum on the td-17 and you only get the master mix out or midi out. any ideas on how to route the midi data that was captured in my daw from my initial performance back into the module (in order to trigger the td-17's onboard sounds), and then back out again into my daw to be captured in isolated simultaneous drum tracks ? i hope that's clear. my goal is to be able to record my initial live performance in one take, assumedly as midi data. then i would like it to trigger the td-17 and record the master output audio. i don't mind sitting post-recording and manually playing back and recording each drum take at a time (eg only snare, then only kick, etc.,..) on separate tracks. this usb midi host seems like it could work somehow in this scenario. do you see any issues with a daw being able to capture the velocity data and anything else necessary in order to correctly retrigger the td-17 so i would get my true performance? i know one could make the argument for starting with a good mix outright, but the issue is that these drum recordings will go to someone who is mixing the full band and would want individual drum tracks. thank you for any ideas. i just discovered your great channel and videos, so my apologies if you've covered this elsewhere. thank you!

Apologies for the late reply! You won't need a USB Host for the use you're describing here - the TD-17 can communicate with your computer via its own USB cable. The USB Host is used to take a computer out of the equation altogether, I think you've misunderstood its usage. To do what you want, there's no way to capture the multi tracks "simultaneously" - it's just not a feature the 17 offers, as you've found. What you would need to do is hook up the TD-17 to your computer via the USB cable and use your DAW to record a full MIDI take of the performance. Then, you'd want to split that MIDI into individual MIDI tracks - some DAWs might have the ability to "split" or "explode" MIDI tracks into new tracks that contain only one MIDI note's data, or you might have to it manually. If you have to do it manually, what I'd do is duplicate the MIDI track as many times as needed for the final amount of drums. For example, duplicate it into 8 new tracks if you want kick, snare, tom 1, tom 2, tom 3, hi-hat, ride, crashes/other cymbals on one track, keeping the "original" track in the project muted so you've always got a "master" to pull from if need be. Then go through each track and delete everything but one instrument on each MIDI track (so everything but the kick on the first track, everything but the snare on the second, etc). Then you'll need to route the MIDI back into the TD-17 module (this can also be done over the USB connection) and capture the audio of each individual drum/cymbal in real time. As long as you keep the tracks perfectly aligned, they should all record in sync. You can capture the audio through the USB cable too if you've installed the 17 drivers and use it in VENDOR mode, or through an interface using the master outputs. It's a time-consuming process, but it's entirely possible. If it gets you the results you want, then it'll be worth it. People usually use VSTs because you get the ability to separate each drum natively and the sounds are more acoustically believable, but if you're happy with the sounds and are willing to invest the time, you should get better results from this than just using the stereo track. Hope that helps.

@@TheeDrumWorkshop Heyyy thank you so much! Super informative and detailed breakdown, I really appreciate this. Thank you for the clarification on the midi host as well. Do you think I will run into any problems with correctly capturing the velocity sensitive midi data into my DAW because the TD 17 puts out velocity sensitive and multi-layered samples? As long as I have the TD 17 driver installed to my computer, should my DAW automatically be set up midi-wise in regards to capturing the depth of the midi performance? For example, let's say I am only performing and recording a snare (for ease of explanation here). If I record the initial midi performance into my DAW from the TD 17, will the DAW capture multiple and varied midi notes per single instrument/drum/cymbal that correspond to the velocity of the hit, and thus be able to correctly replay the velocity sensitive and correct part of the multi-layered sample (upon rerouting as you described above)? I assume my DAW could easily capture changes in volume, but would the data that was initially captured into my DAW be able to tell my TD 17 what layer of the multi-layer sample to play? Hope this makes sense. My concern is that the initial recording of the midi data from the TD 17 into my DAW will only capture basic notes that vary in volume, but may not be able to transmit the information regarding what part of the multi-layer sample to play. I could be missing something and maybe this is the point of the driver download. Thank you for the time you've taken to answer this.
@TheeDrumWorkshop
@TheeDrumWorkshop 3 жыл бұрын
You're welcome! For the other question - in short, yes. MIDI velocities range from 0 - 127 and Roland's sounds probably have about 4 or 5 sample layers in total, so there's no issue there. The DAW doesn't need to "tell" the module which sample layer to play back, it will just send back the same data it received from the module and the module will interpret the incoming MIDI data the same way it sent it. So you'll have no discrepancies between what you initially heard when playing and what comes back out when you record with this method. MIDI is a standardised protocol for this reason and you don't even need the full driver install for this - the TD-17 is a "class compliant" device so can actually just be plugged into a computer and be recognised for MIDI in/out. You only need the full driver to allow for audio over USB. Do a bit of reading up on MIDI if you can, it'll help you understand more of the intricacies. But for this purpose, knowing how to hook up the module and use the DAW for recording, splitting and outputting MIDI is the only real technical "challenge".

So I'm totally confused by this... why can't you just connect two modules via USB midi and set one to send on a certain channel and one to receive on that same channel? Could you at least do that for pass thru without triggering? Why do you need a 3rd device?
@TheeDrumWorkshop
@TheeDrumWorkshop 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure exactly why, but USB MIDI requires something to host it in order to interface with it. Basically, something that can act as the "receiver" of the generic MIDI device information. Most USB MIDI devices like instruments only send data to a host, they aren't hosts themselves, and that applies to pretty much every standard drum module I've seen with the function (bar outliers like the eDRUMin which is more of an interface than conventional "module".) If you see any instruments around that can be hooked up to other USB MIDI devices, it's likely they've got a USB Host built in (pretty sure some of the more advanced AKAI stuff does for instance, but I guess they're more like mobile DAWs or workstations rather than just standard MIDI instruments).

Hey! No, I don't believe so. The only way to create a MIDI In over USB on a module is by using a USB Host. The USB Host acts as if it's a computer to the device, letting them interface. If I remember rightly, the UM One is just a USB to MIDI cable for use with a computer.

I think that should work, if I remember rightly the eDRUMin has MIDI Thru, but probably best to double check the manual. You wouldn't get extra trigger inputs on the eDRUMin software though, they would just be sent through it from the module and you would need to adjust trigger settings etc in there.

Oh, and the only slightly cheaper USB MIDI Host I used was a Miditech one and it wasn't very good. The MIDI stream would sometimes jam up and it would miss notes when you played them, then they'd all play together moments later. I think it was only about £10 cheaper, so not much of a saving for much worse performance. If you actually need a USB host, it's probably better to spend the extra cash to buy one that works well.

Sorry, I didn't see the edit. If you're using internal sounds, there isn't a way to use extra sounds from the TD-17 with the TD-3. The only sounds available are those that are assigned to a pad zone. So the TD-3 can only trigger sounds that are already on the pads hooked up to the TD-17, nothing extra. MIDI "expansion" like that is only possible on certain modules. Roland removed the "percussion set" feature that enabled MIDI expansion after the TD-30.

It would probably be better to choose a different option since the VH-13 is expensive and you won't get the "proper" functionality from it.

It's technically possible by doing the USB MIDI Host workaround, but there are no real benefits to doing it. The Strata Prime will probably work best with Alesis' own pads. If you were keeping both modules, you could send MIDI from the TD-27 module into the Prime. But again, there's not a huge benefit to doing this because the Prime module doesn't support features like positional sensing etc.
