I have used this recipe as well. It does make a really fine chalk paint. Just make sure that you don't wash the paint residue, if you use glass measuring cups, in your indoor sink. Plaster of Paris is bad for your plumbing. I use old plastic jugs that can be thrown away or rinse the residue off the glass cup outside.

I thought this recipe was a great idea, and I'm sure it works well for most, but I wanted to add my experience for anyone who might be doing a similar project to save them from the hassle. My husband has also met another sign maker who ran into the exact same issues. I used this recipe to white wash the background on a bunch of my wood signs, and I applied the paint to the surface using this exact recipe and scraping the excess paint off the wood according to another Upcycled video to get that washed look. I don't know what I did wrong because I made this recipe according to the instructions several times. If ANY moisture touches this paint after it has dried and cured, it fades horribly and comes right off. So definitely seal it! I even hot glued some twine around the edges of a few signs and after about a week, it looked like there was grease all around the sides of the twine. So I tried sealing it. I did some research and found that water-based spar urethane works great for painted wood surfaces because it won't cause white paint to yellow. I tried that in both spray cans and brush on, interior and exterior. Spray worked great and did the trick wonderfully! However, the brush on urethane caused the white wash to thin so bad that I wanted to quit white washing anything altogether. But, it is water based spar urethane after all, so I'm sure the "water base" is what caused it to thin out. I've since stopped using this recipe in favor of the more expensive store bought chalk paints and there is a world of difference. We were recently advised by a professional wood worker to switch away from the spar urethane and spray on a crystal clear lacquer instead. He swore by it and said that is the only thing he ever uses, so we'll see. Maybe that will help seal this homemade chalk paint better. The other issue I've noticed is if you are using this chalk paint over pine wood, the knots tend to bleed quicker and heavier through this paint. Sometimes the cheap solutions end up causing long term headaches, and I feel like my product quality with this cheap paint has cheapened my work considerably.

Plaster of Paris added to acrylic paint as a slurry will begin to cure (harden) as soon as the dry form is hydrated. The reaction is mildly exothermic. IOW if the goal is to paint a large area best to mix the paint and PoP in small amounts and washing the brush or other applicator ASAP. Once set ecpecially in an acrylic or waterbourne medium at hard brush is only then good for mashing cockroaches or other creepy crawlers. A more forgiving home brew mix would be adding chalk (calcium carbonate) to the waterbourne medium (s) Be aware that adding either or both additives to aklyd (sometimes called oil base paints) is not going to work except a a filler. As of this date, the prices for "chalk paint" are dropping. Amazon has a name brand for nearly a US quart for $11.95 (30oz) This is much less than even the big box stores plus this same paintmaker has a flat or matte topcoat formulated for the protective coating over the fragile and very porous "chalk" paints. "Chalk" paints can also be tinted with UTC's (universal tinting colors) inexpensive artiists acylics, Inks and name brand fabric dyes. Paint recyclers generate many thousands of gallons of paint in limited colors from "old" acrylic base paints, Generally repackaged and sold in sometime gallon and many more time if 5 gallon lots. We might,i f tasked painting a whole exterior of a house, could add a sack full of chalk to some of this paint have house flipping as the new thing for chalk paint.

This sounds wonderful and of course the added bonus of your inkjet transfer video has me smiling!! I would like to know if you have used "chalk powder" as an alternative to PofP? I have quite a large container of chalk powder leftover from a homemade gesso recipe and thought to use it up. Thoughts? 😁😋
