I went to an upper body swing with all clubs, keeping a strong stable base. My drives are longer as well as my irons. My game is consistent in low 80s vs high 90s and low 100s. Shot 78, got an eagle and drove to a green on a short par 4. I have confidence every time I set up. My legs are set up wide like sitting in a chair.

Hi my name is Justin Kang from South Korea. Im also a golf instructor and teaching golf in Seoul. I learned golf from Mike Bender when i was in high school. (About 3~4years and my name was Ace Kang back then :) Anyway What a awsome instructor you are!! I totaly agree with your teaching method and golf philosophy!!! So many golf instructors and videos etc tells us that 'you have to swing the club with your left hand n arm + use ur body rotation hip rotation etc. Do not use ur hands.' I totally disagree with that but not many people understand that. I really wanna keep in touch with you and learn your golf philosophy. Please reply back. Thank you so much of ur work! Have a great day sir.

I believe what they needed to help convey is a quieter lower body creates a solid swing. Your legs are only going to increase your swing speed by only 12 percent. How much further will the ball go vs. One another. I like the video. It is a little miss leading if you don't fully understand the golf swing. The beauty of learning is you don't discard everything being taught but what can you take away from it.

Michael Kilcoin it wasn’t meant to be a comprehensive video so I get the statement. If we were to maximize distance, everything is being used in the right sequence.

Wow you need to look into what position that seated swing makes your hands and arms at addresses. That backswing was one of the best I've seen you make with no training aid.

How can we use the right arm and hand to the max without hurting the left hand? When I have practiced this, and got up to 120 mph, the back of my left hand gets really sore. What am I doing wrong?

Interesting video - thanks for making this. Personally I’ve found greater consistency and length when doing yoga twists for flexibility and lower leg strengthening than I’ve ever gotten doing upper body workouts. Yes the strength comes from twisting from the upper pelvis and obliques but none of that can happen well if the lower body isn’t providing a strong and athletic base. Even when he tries to isolate his upper body you can see his legs still support the swing. Another issue is I am naturally stronger with my upper body than lower, so I should be trying to balance that out with more legs than upper body workouts. I think what would be helpful is to show the balance of strength from upper body to lower body and how they are a pyramid that rely on each other for overall swing speed and consistency. There should be an whole body Strength measuring system tailored for golf that shows where the weaknesses are relative to each area and see if the recommended strengthening was effective in identifying the areas of improvement
@lbenigno
@lbenigno 6 жыл бұрын
Another workout that I find greatly enhances swing speed and consistency is cable pull down across the body but concentrate on using legs to twist and drive the cable down. That seems to hit everything from the toes to the obliques as far as twisting and also hits the upper body but more of an isometric since they are doing a static hold.

Good video and I want to compliment you on proving Homer Kelley, author of The Golfing Machine, correct. He calculated that the pivot, body momentum transfer, only added about 10% more distance to the shot. Your test showed it's around 12%. The power comes from the accumulators, 2 in the hands and 2 in the arms. Pivot thrust is over rated and causes pivot controlled hands. I've seen some of your other videos and you worked with instructors with some knowledge of The Golfing Machine so I'm sure you're aware of how important a hand controlled pivot is. As Homer said, the pivot should allow rather than cause things to happen.

I did TGM for years I really liked it but then hit a wall and got stuck, became obsessed with shaft lean and lag and wasn't getting better. Good stuff in there for sure tho.
@thelessontee638
@thelessontee638 6 жыл бұрын
That's why you hit a wall. I bet you were trying to get lag while having shaft lean at address. Here's a secret; you will have clubhead throwaway every time you try to achieve that impact position. No where in the book does Homer tell you to stop or slow the hands for impact. He broke the swing down into 3 stations; address, top and finish. Note that impact is not a station. If you try to achieve a "impact position" you stop or slow the hands causing clubhead throwaway. This is why Homer said take all strokes to the "finish", the 3rd station. This will cause you to keep the hands moving through impact with shaft lean every time. BTW, I'm an authorized instructor.

To achieve a passive club face through impact, you will need to use body rotation and to get speed with that you need to use your whole body. Tony's right arm driven swing promotes flippy action through impact, good for speed but nothing else really. I personally preferred this channel more when it was about playing golf.

Wow Wow Wow, Your demonstration supports my recent theory 100 percent that professional golfers primarily use their upper two quadrants of their torso that includes the shoulders; arms;hands; as well as the right and left rib cage; which extends all the way to the back muscles of their body. The sternum is what separates the left upper quadrant from the right upper quadrant. Any of us must chose which of our upper quadrant we wish to use for our take away, On the down swing we can also choose either right upper quadrant or left upper quadrant or better still more power is generated by the using both. This recent theory of mine has made a better golf swinger out of me at age71; and having undergone a recent open heart surgery; I know it works. So I know in my heart it will work for all. Hope I made myself clear. Believe me the lower body will respond to the upper.

G'day Brendon!! Enjoy your video content!! You want to watch your video replay of your seat and knee swings carefully! They are really good and better than your normal swing!! Not trying too be smart but they eradicate a lot of extra curricular movements in your swing!! If it were me I would be doing a LOT of this!! Ist Class! The modern teaching philosophy has had it wrong for years! You only have to know your ABC"s!! Arms Body then Club!! Too Simple!!

10 mph difference with a driver is about 30 yards. Not sure about a 6 iron, but not chump change. Clearly, percentage of total is not huge, but still significant.

I think this is a great test and instructive for how you generate speed in your swing. I think I'd get about the same relative results as I'm a very upper body golfer. I think that the percentage of lower body use will be way different for many women golfers who clearly have way more lower body action and could outdrive me by many yards yet don't have nearly the same upper body strength. Maybe you could repeat the test with a woman and show the results. Thank you.

Aren't you using the ground forces to generate the arm speed though? If you were to be levitating off of the ground and swing with just your arms, it would be terrible would it not? I'm all about using your arms, just as you would to throw a ball, but to imply that arms can do the swing without a good lower body seems hard to grasp. With great lower body fundamentals, maybe then you can focus on just arms, but people need a strong and solid base to swing from and that shouldn't be ignored.
@BEBETTERGOLF
@BEBETTERGOLF 6 жыл бұрын
You got it. The lower bodies main role (IMO) is to be a strong solid base, it's secondary role is to add some power. We don't want to focus on just arms but we do think they have a dominant role. Lower body is very important still. IMO when you use your lower body to try to generate most of the speed you out of sync up and it needs a lot of timing work to make it good.

@BEBETTERGOLF

I don't think so. IMO sequence creates a better plane but bad sequence makes being on plane really tough. SO I think sequence has to be a first priority then plane but when they work together, boom, beautiful results.

I'm sure Tony could beat me by over 10 strokes and he has a lot of knowledge, but his only claim to fame is coaching Jeff Flagg a long drive champ. Somehow someone who is 6 ft 6 saying just whip the club with your right arm/hand kind of raises red flags to me. Nowadays you have to hit the ball far and solid but pure club head speed is not the sole answer.

Tommy Armour used to say you hold on with the left hand and hit the hell out of the ball with the right hand. (or the left like me, a lefty) so I find some legitimacy here. When I think it, it makes the impact intuitive for me.

I'm never sure if you need to think about this or not. But there's a kind of "moment of high tension", at that split second when you try to hold the club close to your body when starting to rotate back during end of backswing / start of downswing. I mean, yeah... blah, blah, blah. I think your thought should simply be "try to throw the damm ball with your right arm as far as possible". The other stuff should work on it's on.

You don’t really believe this do you Brendan ? The only thing your doing is perfectly timed and better rotation of your upper body and your arms they are in sync , your normal swing your hips move laterally more than they rotate and you over swing everything an it gets all out of sync and sequence . Shorten your back swing and slow your arms down to match your rotation speed and you will be done , your already a good golfer your swing is sound already you need to forget all this rubbish about perfect impact position hands way forward and trying to find some magical fix to be perfect , you are already doing well practice makes perfect , practicing one thing that is not a head full of every swing you can possibly find , I’m surprised you can hit the ball at all with all the swing ideas running around in your head . Your making your swing worse because you keep changing it , too many golf coaches , look what happened to tiger and he was the most dominant for how long , he’s getting it back under control again now , if you slowed down an practiced your short game and putting you’d be playing some amazing golf . For lack of a better comparison your like the guy trying To come up with the million dollar idea to get rich , when really you just have to put your head down and work for it , there is no such thing as the perfect swing just prefect for you , every swing we learn is someone else’s and was perfect for them and they became successful on tour , you want perfect contact perfect arc on plane hit the ball with your eyes closed and you will feel smooth fast swing effortless with amazing contact, take that feel and incorporate those feels into your swing . You have zero swing thoughts eyes closed , no confusion , no thoughts of trying to get it out of the center of the face nothing , it happens naturally because the ball doesn’t move , it’s in the road of your swing path ,plane . Try it . 👍🏻
