One word about these kinds of basslines: layering, layering and more layering. It's all about that, imho. There is always default sawtooth bassline with short ADSR, and a different mid-high freq synth-layers on top of that, to create that "punch" and precise attack. Also, while sub-and low-frequencies remain mono, i think mid and hi-freqs are treated with some stereo wideners (izotope strereo imager, polyverse wider & etc ). Plus some aggresive and fat multiband compression on top of that, to kinda...squeeze these layers into one massive and sharp sound
@MatanIzhak4 жыл бұрын
you are absolutely right, the layer the fuck out of that basses to get that exact fatness, with a little bit of bit crusher, layering the mid to high frequencies with stereo shit is what makes it sound so big

I watched a masterclass of Infected Mushroom yesterday and they showed their tricks and answered some questions. One of the questions was about kick and bass. So, basically they put tone of the kick and bass in the same way as here: tone of the kick should be on 3-4 semitones lower than bass, so together they perform as a chord. Should be useful with this trick if you put lower octave of the bass on the same with a kick! By the way, thanks a lot, really useful trick!

Champion tutorial man! super insightful and easy to follow. I had actually noticed this through analyzing several tracks (Yatzee mainly), and tried to replicate it with low cut EQing and layering a new fundamental, but like you said, incredibly difficult to get the phases to line up correctly. Very cool technique, many thanks for bestowing this knowledge unto us mere mortals

Cant believe i had been doing it so close but never thought of shifting the sine in semitones. thanks Dash. ps: you can add more click to you bass by adding a second filter envelop with just bringing in the smallest amount of Decay (Saves you using a env shaper)
@DashGlitch6 жыл бұрын
Yep I like to usually do that, especially when using synths with no curve settings on the ADSR, I was trying to keep this video concise, hence also not using the distortion etc like in the original track, just wanted to show the phase trick :) But thanks for the tip!

You can do this Serum with the following method. Set OscA to a saw wave then click on "edit" in the waveform window, then "Wave to FFT" box in the upper left of the oscillator table edit window that opens up, then drag the bin 1 box to bottom to give the fundamental zero volume. You can then use OscB set to sin wave to re-add the fundamental and apply the tuning.
@DashGlitch6 жыл бұрын
Yup after the tutorial I’ve been messing with a few VSTs, and I managed to get it with most of them through some method or other, I’ll hopefully release a follow up soon, but thanks for the tip 😃

I'll just say that a nice envelope shaping, a good distortion vst and a little bit of compression can make it all, also the kick is pretty important for a bass to sound good

Like I said in the description - "We're looking at the Vini Vici &. Astrix Style Bass Sound, i'm just discussing the basic concept, if you're looking for the sound that's used in Adhana for example there is further processing, a bit of multiband distortion like Quadrafuzz or Saturn, however I just wanted to showcase this technique as it can be applied to a lot more than just that style of bassline!"

No problem, this technique is also great for making these dark trap reese basses, without detuning the sub :D

In Serum you just need to go to Oscillator Table Edit and select from Singles the HPF Saw. It's a Sawtooth waveform without the fundamental. What I hear after at the end, as a final result, is not good at all and it's normal. You are shifting the fundamental independently of the harmonics and the result might be technically interesting but it's not musical at all. A simple trick is wherever kick and bass is overlapping to use a bass with no fundamentals avoiding either boosting or cancelling the fundamental. You can achieve that by either create another bass sound (duplicate) without the fundamental and on the first 16th note (when overlaps with tail of kick) to play that bass and then 2nd and 3rd 16th note to play the full frequency range bass since there is no kick tail. Another way is to sidechain a hp filter on the bass triggered by the kick so whenever kick is hitting it will move the hp filter and cut the lows of the bass.

In Serum with wave to FFT button you can easly convert saw for additive table editing, then with removing the first bar you can do the same thing you did with A2 OSC in Sylenth even more accurately. So you can have your other OSC with static phase. That phase cancellation technique is cool thou. never thought of it. :]

im sure if you use the sub oscilator in serum you can do the same trick???
@MrKrummelumme6 жыл бұрын
Rieyaad Ismail excatly, you use the sub osc the same way dash uses the a2 osc, and you use the BD analog sine in serum in osc 2 because its an inverted sine wave , so you use That like dash uses the b1 osc

how do you use the invert feature of sylenth1 on operator????
@DashGlitch6 жыл бұрын
operator's oscillators function like an additive synthesizer, you don't need to use cancellation for it, just pull down the first harmonic of the oscillator section once in saw mode and then add the second sine wave, I will make a followup video soon :)

I have a question, what would you use as the tonic of your track? the bass with the pitch difference of the standard key you're playing in?
@DashGlitch6 жыл бұрын
The root note would be the one that your ears are perceiving in the bass, ei the pitch of the saw wave. But just a side fact, the added sine is +3 which makes up the second degree in the minor scale or chord :) that's why it works well with that number, i found -5 also works if you're going with a higher bass sound and wan't a lower "rumble"
@rieyaadismail8306 жыл бұрын
damn, problem is, im mostly making music in the phrygian mode which doesnt have a +3 but a +1 or +4. Hey Dash, thanks for the tutorial! Another similar technique one can do with Sylenth1: Load a Pulse wave in part A + an inverted Pulse wave in Part B which will result in no sound. Then modulate "Phase B" with an LFO and you should get an interesting PWM type sound. Play around with Osc B Phase untill you get something nice. Sylenth FTW lol

so going for the same reason, if I use a Kick on a key and the bass on another key as long as they are inside the key of the song, always respecting the initial scale of the track ... that is, if you know a little harmonic field and scales and only choose the right notes even using only samples (no synths) .... it will also work ..... !!!??? I do this for years and I always thought I was crazy ...rs

Why do you exactly have to put the stereo knob down on each of the oscillators?
@DashGlitch6 жыл бұрын
It was to make sure that all the oscillators are sounding-off in Mono but in retrospect with only a single voice per oscillator its probably not necessary, I'm not so familiar with the internals of Sylenth, so I figured just reduce stereo just in case :)

you dont have to, but bass sound is better in mono so all the channels are playing the exact same sound.

Weak af. Good one shot samples are a million times better. Halion 6 would make a better and more thick and warm sound with most basic Presets. People do this with layering anyway by sweeping cuts in the highs and lows with each layer and tune them by ear. Awesome though it made me think about the theory more rather than using my ears and just doing it.
@DashGlitch5 жыл бұрын
hmm, anywhere I can hear your "better" bass, or see your theory om action?
@nigelneptune78645 жыл бұрын
@@DashGlitch I have only just realised the sheer power of one shot bass samples (VEC for example) and the simple 'sampler track' on nunedo/cubase. This made me realise that I had been 'tuning' layers now with Fabfilter Q3 and the 96db high cut and lowcut. Also the 'end point' of the oneshots is super important in particular. The 'start' point also allows you to change the entire tone and sound/atmposhere/power of a Track with each minute change in its position of just a single bass layer. One shots seem to give an aggressive sharp and solid bouncy feel to my new Tracks I am saving for my Album and I cant believe I seen them as totally unacceptable as a technique! As for Halion 6. It's on 30 day trial with the Steinberg E-Licenser which is around $20 (I have bought 2 now to get trials haha). You might have already witnessed it's power ? It puts Serum to shame for depth... And puts refx Nexus to shame for simplicity if needed. You in particular would make good use out of it. I can't believe I always thought it was some poor Steinberg stock plugin. One last thing I want to share with you before I go to sleep is.... I have recently found that syncing Compressors attack/release times in milliseconds but in direct relation to the specific Tracks BPM is one of the most profound skills I ever figured out. Works like a dream for Mastering and also for just about everything else. Example at 140bpm 1 full beat is 428 milliseconds. SO either that or exactly half that would be an awesome mathematical Comp release time... 53ms or 106ms would mathematically be great attack times allowing through the pop of the kick etc. It seems to be working wonders for me. Also works for figuring out Reverb pre-delay times and decays it's actually great for lots of things. I seemed to have either profoundly enlightened people with the news that I set my Compressors like that or made them very angry at me lol. Anyway I don't know how I ended up rabbiting on but you teach me awesome stuff so thought I would share. I always wonder do you figure all these lessons out yourself by Ear?
