Hey sweetie ! Currently I've completed my bachelor's on the basis of computer science. But I'm passionate about fashion, design,modelling and stuff since childhood. I'm motivated by turning my love of fashion into a career. I've always been fascinated with every aspect of the fashion industry. Working in a fashion environment is my top career objective. A job in fashion would be a dream come true for me. So is there any career for me as a computer graduate ? Like Let's say animation design, filming and video, graphic design.. I mean it can be anything on design..
@383design
@383design 2 жыл бұрын
Any of those are possible, and now that fashion is moving in a more tech driven direction, your computer science degree may really come in handy. 3d fashion is a growing category, and there is a need for more 3d designers (both fashion and technical). The animation could come into play with people wanted the 360 view of their designs or even virtual shows with an avatar. And video has definitely become an important part of most businesses, not just fashion. So you definitely have options!

If you want to work in corporate, check out some of the job listings on LinkedIn to see what they're asking for. And even if you don't want to work in corporate. those listing are helpful to see what people are looking for. Many indie companies are looking for similar skills.

what degree should I get/ what should I study to have a career in fashion other than being a designer?
@383design
@383design 2 жыл бұрын
The video gives you a look at some other options, and many of them have specific degrees in schools. I know FIT has a styling program (of you want to go into styling), textile design (if you want to be a textile artist), and I believe they also have a program for color theory and trend. I would also suggest just calling a school you're interested in and talking to someone about what other creative programs they have other than design. Also, if you're more interested in the business side, you can go into merchandising, buying, planning, sales. There's a lot of players in fashion so you have quite a few options.

Yes, you can! If you decide to use Browzwear, they have their own online "university" that will teach you how to use the program. CLO has a KZbin channel. There aren't many online courses right now, but there's an organization called MOTIF that has an online course for both:) Also, the woman who teaches the Browzwear one is out of Portland, and she has her own more in-depth course that I believe she teaches live (virtually).

Hi, Marie. Thanks for watching and commenting. From what I've seen, getting into styling is all about networking. It's definitely a who you know game. I would suggest you find a stylist you're interested in working with and intern with them. Stylists almost always need help, and if they don't need it now, they will so leave your name with them and keep following up. It's not an easy field to break into but it can be done if you're willing to work for it and network your butt off!

@383design

It is harder to get into a company as a fashion designer without a degree, but not impossible. Most people who want to work in the industry but don't have formal training look for internships or apprenticeships first. You also want to make sure you put together a great portfolio that includes your illustrations as well as pictures of things you've created, technical illustrations and have a tech pack or two handy. (You don't necessarily need to put the TP in your portfolio, but you want to show that you can do one.) Some people will also try to get into a company as admins or assistants so they can just get their foot in the door, and then work their way up, making it known regularly that they want to move into design and are willing to start at the bottom (as an assistant) and work their way up. When you don't have a diploma and you want to work in the industry, you have to get a little creative with getting in. Unlike other industries, fashion is still a little stuck on having a diploma and don't regard as highly those adjacent skills that other industries take into consideration (unless their hiring for really high up positions, like CEO or COO.) One other thing: get on LinkedIn and start connecting with industry people. Talk to and network with as many people that will speak to you. Start following companies you think you want to work for. Immerse yourself as much as possible in fashion industry and business culture there.

Hey! Is there any jobs in Fashion industry for language speaker. Like I will do my degree in French language. Are there any career opportunities for languages in this industry. Please reply
@383design
@383design 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure about just language. The language skills are often tied to something else, and it's usually a "nice to have" not a "need to have". Like they'll ask for a Production Manager and then say "knowing or speaking Spanish is a plus." I've seen a few jobs where a 2nd language is required, but most list it as optional. And I've only seen it tied to another industry job like designer, Sourcing Manager, Product Manager, etc. The majority of those jobs are also usually not tied to something creative, at least not in the US.

@383design 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, Arathy. Thanks for watching and commenting, and sorry I missed this and didn't respond sooner. Do you like Chemistry? Have you ever thought about Textile Science or working to develop new fabrics or dyes? There are a lot more companies now trying to develop more sustainable raw materials for apparel, and your chemistry background could really be useful for that. You'd probably be best talking to your adviser and telling him or her what you're thinking and they'd be best to guide you towards what classes you should start looking into. Every college and university offers different things, and if what you want to do isn't offered at your university, it's best you know now so you can start looking at other schools. Or perhaps the school can help you customize something. (I had a friend who was able to do that.) Hope that helped. Good luck!

@@dilucs.servant1961 Thanks for watching and commenting! Designers who work with teams for brands are just that: in-house designers that work for a brand . And if you want to be a factory seamstress, it's traditionally not the most highly paid job. Most US workers at least get paid minimum wage, maybe more depending on who they work for and where the job is located in the country. However, there aren't a lot of factory seamstress jobs in the US (though it's an industry that is slowly being revived;)

Hi, Nisa. You may want to look into being a stylist's assistant, and see if you can do find someone who is looking for a part time assistant. Maybe just on the weekends or something like that. You might also be able to work with some indie brands part time. It's a little more challenging (but not impossible) to find part time work in corporate unless you're saying you're a freelancer, which is a little different.

Most people work their way up to director so if you're willing to start from the bottom, it's very possible. And with stylists, they take apprentices all the time, so if that's something you're interested in, you should definitely go for it! Styling seems to be less focused on whether you have a degree in fashion that design, too, so it might be an easier switch:)

Hello! Thank you for watching and commenting! I appreciate you:) Commerce and design are pretty different, but it's not impossible for you to make the switch. I would suggest you try to fit in a class on color theory or trends (some schools do have those). And if your school doesn't have that (and you can't find a good online course), look into taking a general/intro design class. Also, see if you can intern or do some projects for some indie designers or companies that need trend boards. Particularly if you want to go into corporate but certainly after you graduate, your work and even a portfolio is going to be real important since your degree won't be in design. You may even want to have a separate IG page or Pinterest page with trend boards you create so you have some work to show to people once you start looking for jobs.

@383design Жыл бұрын
There are lots of industries including fashion adjacent ones that will buy fashion illustration. You just need to find them. And people in fashion will still use Illustrators, just not the way they once did. Many Illustrators are creating a lane for themselves and getting partnerships to make a business of fashion illustration. You might want to check out some of the Illustrators that are making fashion Illustration their livelihood like Holly Nichols, Hayden Williams or Megan Hess. Holly sells her Illustrations (and products with her Illustrations on them) on Etsy and her own website, custom digital brushes for Procreate, and I think she has a partnership with Copic (the marker company). I know Hayden has done partnerships with Bratz dolls and has gotten to design a few of the dolls based on his illustrations. Megan does a lot. You can look her up on IG or on her website. Hope that helps!

I don't. I mentioned in the video that you don't really see jobs for illustrators, at least not like you would for other jobs in fashion industry. And definitely not on LinkedIn. A lot of what's out there are freelance or short term projects. You can try doing a google search for fashion illustrator jobs. There's one curretly in NYC at Marc Jacobs and there's quite a few on Upwork. In addition, f there are companies that incorporate Illustration within their services (like trend forecasting companies--WGSN, Promostyl, etc.), you may want to inquire directly with them.
