Carbon rod from AA battery helps, but shielding gas to prevent oxidation during 'welding' would be a plus.

Really cool idea. This could be very useful in tack welding very thin sheet metal, if one didn't have a tack welder. I would recommend a larger 12 volt battery to power it that can handle the short circuit amperage without risk of damaging the battery.

Please use Carbon-Zinc Cells. They have a Carbon rod. (Anode). Alkaline cells do not have them. Anyhow it's not a good idea to short circuit a battery via a carbon rod (very low resistance), which will lead to premature failure of the Source (Battery). Regards, Engineer from India.
@NSilver8323 жыл бұрын
Yep, yep, yep. Your comment was earlier than mine. Don't do that unless you want to get rid of your battery pretty soon otherwise your battery will degrade and die even if it's new.

@@senpaiseiichi3645 No! The electrode requires quite a high current to heat up. Instead you can use a 12V/5A (60W or ~72VA) transformer as the source. The higher the current rating the better. Regards, BTG TIGER 1997.

Could you explain shielding gas? Do you think this would seal a small crack in a catylitic converter or do I need like a filler metal?
@21gioni2 жыл бұрын
@@spycat917 shielding gas displaces the atmosphere in and around the area being welded. Even if you are fixing a tiny crack. The other method is to use a welding flux. In the process of producing a metal Argon or some other method is used to prevent oxygen from entering the molten pool.

Without flux or shielding gas it's not welding. The oxygen in the air is getting to the molten metal and you're just gluing things together with brittle slag.
@donaldcampbell78943 жыл бұрын
Exactly right the same thing happens when I short things out with my extension cord. That's not welding. The very definition is joining two metals as if they were never separated. Spot welding works because no air is between the two weldments.
@LionelAchari3 жыл бұрын
@@donaldcampbell7894 I guess in a rare case were you need to spot weld a battery temporally in an emergency in the middle of nowhere then it mite be a good idea.

@troubleshooter19753 жыл бұрын
SalemikTUBE I up-voted you, but: Actually, upon consideration, there might be some CO2 shielding present due to the hot carbon rod absorbing the free oxygen in the vicinity, albeit the oxygen has to already be there to be absorbed. I might have to give him that... Also, the carbon rod might cause some surface hardening and brittleness. All in all I agree it is not a very good method.
@jonathanfinger7122 жыл бұрын

if you guys want to do this with welding gas for more quality professional results, you need argon gas. Buying a tank is $200+ and this is a budget build so taht is out. I recommend buying wine preservation argon which comes in a spray paint can size at 80psi for around $9 per can if you buy 2 cans. It will buy you about 2 minutes of welding time and you can send it through a tube and blow it onto your weld when you begin welding. you will need to make a finger switch to activate it and get it blowing just when you are about to engage the weld. These cans will enable you to do some decent small welds for a while.

Does it work with the adaptor ( transformer ) for the power supply?
@DrAgan_tortojed2 жыл бұрын
But of course. Only, it has to be powerful - able to deliver constant high current (30 - 50A or more - the more, the better) without a drop of voltage during a long intervals. Practically, it would need to be a stabilized PSU of at least 500 Watt (say, 12 VDC/40 ADC). That being said, traditional PSU would require a transformer with a soft iron core as powerful as 1000VA, massive "graetz" (bridge rectifier) and a lot of "filtration" (capacitors with huge capacity). The more current and more voltage in a battery (or PSU), the tool would be able to weld thicker pieces of metal in less time...
