If you MUST carry out this dangerous repair, at least offset the two joins so that they are not alongside one another and cannot short across. Secondly, don't do this.

And double, triple the heatshrink tubing, and use bigger ones to cover everything instead of using cotton and tape. Filling larger heatshrink tube with hot glue can be used to help with strain relief too.

It may look safe and probably it even is save, but when you have a fire in the house, the insurance will not pay a penny when this is found in your house. even when it was not the real course of the fire. A replacement is so cheap, you do not want to take the risk.

No. It isn't. Replacement plugs not only suck, they are designed for 14-gauge wires, ideally non-stranded, not the fine wires of what looks like a low-current LED light string to me, having just replaced a plug on one. Also, in much of the world, like small villages in Mexico, such things are not available at all. The replacement plugs are expensive, non-waterproof and provide no method to protect fine wire connections from mechanical stress. You are therefore left with binding the insulation to the plug with electrical tape and praying nobody pulls on the cord. This method is superior to that, but it's actually better to splice on an old lamp or appliance cord rather than deal with the short wires. Then you can fold the wires back on themselves and bind the whole thing together with tape, protecting the relatively weak splice from the tension inherent in most string-light installations.

@@bebopalooblog2877 because the waterproofing is ensured with chaterton? Up to the fabric wire it was fine. The glue of the chaterton will flow over time, and you have to use non-flammable wire. you should have reused the rubber that was removed to strip the wires, which you would have melted beforehand, or remodeled the socket with sticky, elastic and UV-resistant silicone among other things. but above all... never use a flame, it degrades the properties of the plastic coating the copper wires.

It is an excellent video recording, but the whole point on safety is missing. If someone follows the instructions perfectly, they end up with a very dangerous setup. No, unless this is an emergency requirement, it should never be done. Buy a replacement plug that was designed to work better and last longer. If someone repairs an electrical cord in this fashion, they end up having an electrical failure and possibly a fire hazard.

Hey kids you can use your playstation now. Tug on the cord like you usually do (how it broke in the first place). Reach around the back of the cabinet to plug it in with your wet hands. I have done this (remote location not near stores) with offset joins and heavy shrink over the top and still didn't trust it so got rid of it. I only watched this to the end to see how bad it really was. I noticed slight nick in the insulation for starters - prone to break/shortcircuit even if not conductive just yet.

My grampa would be so proud of you. We used to fix everything, whereas now we usually just buy a new one. Grampa is rolling in his grave... but in the factory they stamp out a new cord in exactly 2.5 seconds, and this took 5 minutes to repair, not counting 3 hours for trips to the electronics store for soldering iron, solder, and shrink-wrap; to the hardware store for electrical tape; the fabric store for thread; the department store for superglue... It really doesn't make sense to fix a lot of broken junk unless you're stuck in some remote location and need that lamp in a hurry. And have all that stuff on hand.

I never had any luck with off the shelf plug ends. Even when I paid $200 to get a bunch of my cords fixed. I do a similar method as this with more reinforcement than the video shows. Nothing you buy off the shelf is engineered to work flawlessly. Everything is engineered to be just good enough to sell at the price people are willing to pay. Moreover, even the plug ends they sell that do not really work, are often as expensive as getting a new cord.
@dennisgarber

I use several extension cords for work each day and use about 250 feet of them on the weekends to mow my 75 feet by 400 feet deep lawn, since I have so many cords, and a corded lawn mower doesn't stall on long grass like my riding and push gas mowers, and the electric cuts the lawn shorter and the lawn looks better. My lawn grows an inch per day and I need to cut it 2 times a week with my gas mowers and once with the electric. Also, the thinker the copper wire, the more brittle and more quickly we get cord breaks. The thick wire is nearly impossible to get a good plug replacement. So slicing and soldering has been the only practical solution. It seems like a good thick cord does not take very long before needing a repair, more so than the thin. The wife and son refuse to mow rationally, from the outlet outwards, so the cord cannot get run over. I think they also purposely run over the cord with the lawn mower as an excuse not to mow, just as they use the excuse that they can't get the fas mowers started. Thus a seemingly constant cord repair is the norm.

I make repairs like this frequently. Though I use an air tool instead of a lighter for my shrink tube and I Use a third piece of shrink tube over the whole repair. I flux the wires as well to make tinning easier and more reliable. Never had a problem with a repair. I dont use thread as I dont see a benefit to it and that looks time consuming. A properly soldered joint can not be pulled apart and once wrapped by a properly rated material like tube or tape is an accepted standard of repair worldwide. IF I were going to make that repair and I had the option I would have bought and installed a replacement end but this works too.

When the sign of My new beginning is revealed to the masses, how will humanity react? I now walk in the midst of My people, I dwell in the midst of My people. Now, those who have true love for Me, such a person is blessed; blessed are those who submit to Me, they will surely remain in My kingdom; blessed are those who know Me, they will surely hold power in My kingdom; blessed are those who desirewith Me, they will surely be saved from the chains of Satan and they will enjoy the blessing of Me; blessed are those who can renounce themselves, they will surely enter My possession, and inherit the reward of My kingdom. I will bless those who are satisfied with My words; surely they will be the pillars that will raise the top of My kingdom, surely they will have an incomparable reward in My house, and no one will be like them. Have you accepted the blessings given to you? In the midst of darkness, you will certainly not lose the light that guides you. Surely you will be the master of all beings. Almighty God said The KINGDOM expands in the midst of mankind, it is formed in the midst of mankind, it stands in the midst of mankind; NO FORCE can DESTROY My KINGDOM. Among My people who are in the kingdom of the present, who among you is not a person who mingles with people? Who among you lies outside the human condition? WHEN the SIGN of My NEW BEGINNING is REVEALED to the MASSES, HOW will HUMANITY REACT? You have SEEN with your OWN EYES the STATE of MANKIND; SURELY you NO LONGER HOPE to ENDURE forever in this WORLD? Z zawodu jestem elektronikiem i automatykiem.

Pozdrawiam serdecznie Kreatywnego Mistrza!

I've done this with small appliances that have unique plugs. I think like a hair trimmer, but also a lamp. But I already had wire stripper (instead of using lighter), solder and iron, shrink tubing, etc. Instead of using electrical tape put another piece of shrink tubing on before the repair and slide it over the wires. Not safe for anything that draws a lot of current or heavy use.

A repair that will work, but it is not safe and requires extra tools & parts. Much better option is a Leviton replacement plug at Home Depot for $2.47

I like the way you show us to repair a broken connection. There is always someone to critic to make negative comment. Really boring.

This would be an excellent solution after The Apocalypse, when replacement power cords are scarce (but superglue, soldering irons, solder, shrink tubing and electricity are abundant).

Cable? Its a cord. Hardwired to an appliance. So, bin a $50 heater because of the plug??

I'm assuming this was not an extension cord. Go to the home store like America's Lowe's or Home Depot or even a little Ace Hardware. Buy a replacement plug. While I learned something new with the use of a lighter and tough finger to remove insulation buy a cheap wire stripper at the warehouse sized stores or a little hardware store. Heck, I've seen a wire stripper at a Dollar Tree. Then slide off the rubber cover of the replacement plug and slide it up the wire. There will be a couple terminals inside with big ugly screws. Loosen the screws. As inconvenient as it may be, wrap the exposed wire around the screw in the clockwise direction. That way as the screw tightens it will wrap the wire tighter. Slide the rubber cover down onto it. It will also have a small hose clamp. Tighten that down on the cable so flexing will not pull on the wires on their terminals. The result will be big and ugly but safe.

Assuming one has a soldering iron and solder... otherwise its cheaper to buy a new plug end. And by the way heating the insulation with a lighter is fine except you'll burn your fingers if you gab the insulating right after you light it on fire! A little note stating that fact would have been a thoughtful addition to your video.... mister master!
