I guess in the movie this was never clear. I know that in the book the coach was Dracula disguised because in the book Jonathan is impressed about how strong the coach is and that Dracula had the same strenght. Fun fact: In the book, the coach was early because the coach driver was driving the horses really hard, trying to avoid having Jonathan Harker meet up with the carriage to Dracula’s castle. Gary Oldman's talent was impressive and I think he necessarily needed to fill a void that Keanu couldn't to maintain the quality of the movie. I found it very romantic. Oldman brought a humanity to Dracula that made me see him more as a real person than a monster but also a monster.
