Cree Summer unfortunately ain’t the only VA to deal with tokenism. It’s been a thing for veterans like Phil LaMarr and Kevin Michael Richardson and on the anime side of things, it’s unfortunately been happening for newer actors like Zeno Robinson and Anairis Quiñones. We talked about it a while ago but yeah, ⚪️ people are the default no matter the industry. Also your hair is fine, girl!!! Hope you’re doing okay! 🩵

I hate it when people are discussing racism in the voice acting industry and then people use Cree, Phil, and Kevin as gotchas/tokens, not realizing the irony in that those are the only three black VAs they can name

It's how black actors get viewed for specific roles only while white people can be anything. Confused as to why the best person for the role for a black character wouldn't be a black person. Frustrating how black actors are rarely considered for their talent outside of black communities. It's either "Yeah I know so and so from *laundry list of media*" or "So and so is really funny" with rarely anything between. It could be a show full of sentient trains and somebody would have an issue if there was more than one black VA. Also, your tone is fine. You're a sweetheart. Nothing to apologize for. Talk how you talk

That weird double standard should never exist in the first place. No matter what kind of person they are, they deserve to be anything they wanna be regardless of background! And I mean, everyone!

It’s also weird that for black and POC actors, They have to resort to code switching when voicing white characters but white voice actors are allowed to put on accents when voicing black or other POC characters. I’m glad that there’s a new policy that has voice actors of color voicing characters of color in animation.

You hit the nail with this video. After watching your video about the lack of black female characters in animation, I instantly thought the reason why Cree Summer was the main black female VA is because of tokenism. They could have had plenty of black female VAs, why was it only cree summer?

Crystal Scales is another black voice actress who was Daisy in Oswald and Libby in Jimmy Neutron. Fun Fact: if I'm not mistaken she was this random background character in Moesha who didn't like her.

Great Video. I think the bigger issue is that society see's black people in certain avenues. In sports and music black people dominate, and this is because talent is pushed to the forefront over systematics and politics. Therefore people only see black people in those spaces. But with acting including voice acting, that's normally seen for white people as they were allowed to thrive and pursue those areas, while black people never got the chance. Society needs to see that black people like various things and are in all spaces, people are still shocked to see black people liking cartoons/anime or wanting to be a VA. Cree summer talent is incredible because for her to be a legend VA and a biracial person is not easy. I see the same thing is happening now in Anime with black VA's but I do hope we get more coming up and not the same 3 black people.

This was both informative as well as concerning. As much as I enjoy animation, hearing and seeing someone that is similar to me was the cherry on top. I have massive respect for Cree Summer. But I do wish there were more POCS at that time. But it's is a bit better today but that is no excuse for the Industry. Ps. Has anyone else heard of Supa Team 4? If so reply.

Oh the shit with Bleach is absolutely ridiculous. Anairis Quinones is literally a wonderful voice actor so to see how Wendee Lee handled that entire situation with Viz and her being recasted back as Yoruichi was so dissapointing. She literally did not need to say shit.

I wholeheartedly understand you aren't hating here, or even in most of your videos. This is important to talk about especially since I surprisingly hadn't considered the burden of tokenism on Cree Summers herself until now. Inclusivity and diversity needs to expand not just within characters in media but BEHIND THE SCENES TOO! Thank you for sharing, I hope you and everyone reading this are doing well

I love Cree Summers, she is a voice of my childhood, but it is weird how she was basically everywhere there was a black girl, looking back on it it's weird how it was only her. Like they couldn't even asked her if she knew any other black voice actresses? They had her literally work everything? Appreciate the only example where she wasn't any of the black girls, Static Shock, which is shocking (no pun intended) considering that show. I'm sure if they could have they would have, but I think they'll lose me getting this cuz they had Phil LaMarr and those two are basically the two biggest black names in voice acting, both then & now still.

Kimberly Brooks has been around for a while, at least since (afaik) No More Heroes as Shinobu, and more recently as fan-favorite Rebecca in the Cyberpunk 2077 anime. I love her voice, a very unique sorta nasally voice, it's nice.

I've tried having this conversation with some people before, and they would attempt to bring up The Proud Family as a counterpoint, not realizing that aside from (surlrise surprise) Cree Summer, every other black woman in the cast was either a screen actor (Paula Jai Parker, Karen Molina White, etc,) or a celebrity guests. There were few, if any black women on the show that were known PRIMARILY for voice acting. And that's not to say that it's an inherently bad thing for a screen actor to do voice acting, but bringing Proud Family up as a counterpoint to the lack of visible black voice actresses in the industry comes off as a disingenuous refusal to engage with the point.

seeing cree summers treatment voicing more than one character in KND is very similar to the boondocks treatment of regina king which i dont think was a inherent wrong choice due to the great performance, but was definitely problematic because there is enough talent in the usa to find another black voice actress. also despite being a fan of the offensive shock humor when done with nuance of course. i disliked how cree was made to portray many offensive situations and tasteless jokes on drawn together. that was a very straight and white writers room cree is a strong woman and has more than paid her dues. thank you captain for the great quality video, you're looking great as usual i can't wait for the next vid. i even messaged my local library and asked them to order your book "um dont call me sis" stay elevated peace and good vibes from indiana, usa

It is common for professional voice actors to voice multiple characters in obe show or movie. [Only famous non-voice-actors and guest stars tend to voice only one character in a show or movie.] Even then, it still doesn't excuse why white people keep using only cree summers to voice every black female character. [I get that cree is very talented and that she has to do that many roles to maintain her voice-acting career. But geez, let her voice act with other poc and give other voice actors of color a chance so cree's vocal chords can rest. It shouldn't have taken several decades for her to finally be in a show where she isn't the only poc voice-acting - netflix spirit rangers in case anybody was wondering. And if cree keeps being the only person they turn to to voice black female characters, her vocal chords will get damaged to the point that she has to retire from voice-acting like tom kenny. And the only non-black show i can think of that doesn't automatically use cree for every black female character is steven universe. Can't count adventure time, owl house, or the north something show made by the people who made bob's burger since those shows only have one main female character that is a poc.]
