When you mentioned the stories about fictional characters being inserted into historical events, it reminded of a book series that used to be popular when I was in elementary school called “I Survived”. Those books focused on the main character (different in each book) being in tragic events that happened throughout history such as 9/11, the sinking of the Titanic, and major natural disasters.

I’ve never heard of the book you’ve mentioned, but have heard of the incident that happened in Alabama…Also, I agree that romanticizing tragic events (such as Titanic and such) is incredibly disrespectful to those who have lost their lives during that time. I’m all for writing/ creating stories (with one’s favorite characters and such) but to just romanticize such events is not okay

@@Darkstalker1012 I asked because you used Titanic as an example. I think you might be confusing romanticizing with depicting. Like Selma depicted the church bombing and how horrific it was. Romanticizing would be like a more hopeful portrayal.

Yeah I remember reading The Watsons Go to Birmingham as a class book and I really good and funny! Like when the older brother got his tongue stuck to the light pole and by the end of the first chapter the whole family was crying out of fear, pain or laughter. Or that part where the little sister kept stopping the mama from burning the older brother with matches because he kept lighting them in the house. Or Rufus! I saw the movie on Netflix and it severely lacked! It didn't have any of the charm the book had, they cut out the best friend. Like the book had sad parts but there's some fun. Historical fiction shows and movies can be good depending on the execution. The difference between the 1997 Titanic and those bad animated Titanic movies is the live action portrayed as a tragic event, with happy moments before people died horribly. In The Watsons Go to Birmingham the church bombing is a tragic event. The main character thought his little sister died because he found her shoe in the rubble, it traumatized him. Like some kids probably read the book, probably felt the same way as the main character and they learned about those 4 Little Girls.

I almost forgot about Selma. Sorry people it’s been awhile since I watched it. I definitely need to rewatch it just not sure when?! Ps: I do see your point that historical fan-fiction/historical fiction could be a bad thing. However I do like historical fiction because it helps explain the history like as if I’m right there. Most recently I read Luck of the Titanic by Stacey Lee which was enlightening and bittersweet!

I did watch Teen Titians Trouble in Tokyo, but oddly enough I don't remember much from it rewatching it as an adult it just did not stick into my mind much, maybe that tells about the movie or maybe it just wasn't very memorable to me. When people write fictional characters inserted into historical events, it can be good when done right, cause there is a fine line of where it starts to get romanticized to a certain degree if that makes sense, or starts to get into basically fanfiction-esque. The shows I still like are Totally Spies, I like the spies and comedic aspect of it, even though I recognize problems within it, I still like things like Bratz, Hey Arnold, I still enjoy going back to The Wild Thornberries sometimes just as a few examples. Shows I really can't eff with no more though are shows like I Carly, cause when I go back and watch it...idk why I found it entertaining as a child, well I do but as I grew up I was like...ummm this is a no for me, Freddie has a cery toxic relationship with his mother, Sam is toxic as hell with too many anger issues, and I used to like Sam and I go back and look and wonder tf why. Victorious, if I list this comment will be longer than intended, the songs were great but seeing it as an adult idk why I managed to really watch tf outta this, the only unproblematic character is Andre, Cat is just confused, and as the show went on they decided to make her stupider and stupider for whatever reason.

I do still have a soft spot for FOP, but the way the kids are treated on it is hard to sit through as an adult (and now an aunt). And it's not even like Matilda, wherein she gets the better of the adults a lot and eventually the ab*sers are gotten rid of; it's just that the world of FOP is filled with adults who just kind of suck and don't care about their kids, and there's no real escape from it.

I feel similar about Martin, The Fresh Prince and even Girlfriends to a certain extent, Girlfriends does hold up a bit better today. But Martin and the Fresh Prince are very much of that era of the 90's, which A LOT of 90's era comedy just isn't that funny to me as an adult like it was when I was a teen in the 90's. I am a huge Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fan, even now as an adult, played all the games, had the toys, comics, movies various animated shows etc. Having said that; the 1980's cartoon is unwatchable today, after the second season it's nothing but a poorly animated toy commercial. I actually like the "red sky" era of the last 3 seasons, which back in the 90's people hated, because it tried to make the show more serious with an over arching plot instead of the episodic silly toy commercial shit that was the show up until then. Is the "red sky" era the best storytelling? No, but I can at least watch that now over the vast majority of the show. I also have a hard time with the CGI 2012 Nickelodeon show, at least binging it. Watching that show back to back is frustrating because NOTHING changes, until after about 10 episodes, then they leave the door open for a reversal of anything status quo changing, takes another series of episodes for the ACTUAL change to set in, then something happens that snaps everything back, it's infuriating to watch. The biggest moments of the show are undone, then redone over and over (Splinter and Karai are the worst examples). In contrast, the 2003 cartoon is best watched as binging, because for five seasons you get an overarching plot, where there's actual arcs, the Turtles actually improve as both characters and in their abilities, 2012 Turtles are still getting their asses kicked by Shredder 4 seasons later, he was dead by the 4th season of the 2003 show. I still enjoy the 2012 show, but it's best watched at maybe 4 episodes a sitting, not binged

When it comes to making a story that includes real events that impacts many people, especially resulting in high death tolls, there's a fine line you must tow. I think there is space for these stories to exist and written properly. Writers that are worth their dollars will be very cautious and selective about how they present their stories as to not romanticize a real tradegy and gloss over it. For instance, if you write a love story set during the Vietnam War, it can work if you take into consideration the sociopolitical landscapes of the time. And for the love of god, do NOT do a Madama Butterfly story because it's not only overdone and unoriginal, but offensively orientalist as hell.

16:44 I’m 37 and we used to pass around Zane books and others in high school! Lol I remember there was this series of books by a black male author I can’t remember his name but all of his main characters would be bi black men or closeted bi black men. I think the author might have been gay, not sure but I read them when I was like late teens I found them in the attic of my step great grandmother’s house. Looking back on them it was biphobic and homophobic just a tad but I think these books were also written in the 90s or even 80s because AIDS is big part of some of the books.

25:28 Yeah, and Vicky being the reason why Timmy has fairies. I mean, Chester could use fairies. Why doesn't he have any since he and his dad are laughingstocks in Dimmsdale? Timmy's parents in later seasons just dismissed all of the abuse Timmy went through because they rather find anyway to get out of parenting their own kid. Mr. and Mrs. Turner's negligent parenting just got too flanderized as the series dragged on.
