I'm 67 and I do all kinds of fishing and have lots of good rods and reels but I'm still getting back to this simple fishing technique from time to time. It's still my favorite way of fishing. The biggest fish I caught on a rod like yours without any reel was a 32 lb. Nothing gives you more satisfaction. Great video as always. Thanks for sharing.

I just used to go down to the river with some line and a few hooks. Find good limber limb on a tree. Cut it off. Tie my line and catch a few grasshoppers. It was on!! That's fishing!!! Now we have all these 100.00 rods and 200.00 reels. Nothing wrong with that. But I can catch fish with a stick!!! 😁

man you really got me waxing nostalgic...my great aunt Eunice is the one that marked me for life as a fisherman...cannot remember when I wasn't carrying an empty bucket and a coffee can full of dirt and worms from the lot as she carried the long cane poles...we would stop at a creek and catch the bait on the way to the pond...she used cloth fishing line and kale hooks (small but strong), and fished without any weight or cork. Just throw it out and let the line sit on the bottom...catching bream on the worms and bass on the creek perch...no one in my memory could out fish her (on the bank)...I do miss her and those times in my life...and we did not cull nothing...

I enjoyed that video. My step dad, born in 1937 on a farm in rural Weat Virginia, grew up fishing in creeks. They’d grab a long cane pile, tie some string and a hook on it, and catch catfish, bass and bluegill. It’s not that he really enjoyed fishing, or eating the fish, he was just hungry. And when you’re hungry, you’ll find food.

I love the old fashioned type of fishing like you’re doing. I like to rigg up a 12 foot bream buster and drift around in 4 to 8 foot flats dragging the red worm on the bottom putting my split shot about 6 inches above the worm on lake Eufaula. A lot of muscle beds are around the flats. Had good success with catfish and a few shellcracker.

Gene, you're exactly right and you've brought back to me, a flood of memories of the or my cane pole fishing days. No eyelets, just fishing line tied to the first two knots on the pole. Sun perch, catfish and needle nose garfish, I've had fun pulling out of a gully by my late but loved Gramma's house. And yeah, back in those days, big fish like these were definitely not released because we were fishing for food, having fun doing it but there was no release. It's off to cleaning and fish frying the variety that was caught.
