Fishing creeks and rivers for those extra strong bass is so fun but not using the right equipment can make it tough.
I really like a 6-10 med XF rod with a 2000 size reel, 15 lb braid and 10 lb flouro leader

Great video and info from you, and your friends, Brother John. I love, too, how you talked about your Father being a Pastor, and telling that, when he would get ready to close his message, that you still had a good twenty minutes! Kind of been there, done that. I had an Assemblies of God Pastor that would get ready to "Close", and still be a good 10 or so minutes, before he stopped. Another Preacher Friend of mine, that lives out in Texarkana, Arkansas,used to tell about a Pastor that, when this Pastor would say:"Finally, my Brethren", you still had a good half-hour! I understand, though. A Preacher is trying to tell his people everything that God told him to say, and, with that going on, it's hard to find a good stopping point! Kinda like this message that I'm texting to you!😁😁😁! Thanks again for all the info in this video. Like you, I can't stand those overly-long handles on some of the Rods that they have on the market nowadays. It's overkill, in my opinion! I'll just stick with the Shakespeare Ugly Stik that I have. It's a 6 1/2 long medium setup, and I've matched it with a Shakespeare Reel, and 10 lb. Power Pro Braided Line. I'm going to try a lo-visibility Florucarbon line .. probably 8-10 lbs., and I'll do mine, like you do yours, length-wise. Wish me luck! God bless you and yours!

I'm the odd man out, but I love creek fishing with my Zebco Bullet on a 5'-6" Basspro Tourney Rod (green ones). This setup is durable and affordable. The Bullet is a little heavy at 13oz, but it's as fast as a baitcaster with zero backlash issues. I use 10# monofilament and have had no trouble bringing in up to 3# smalleys and 5# largemouth bass. $175 out the door.

My combo has been a 6”6 medium fast action, with a 2500 spinning reel. I stick with a slightly shorter rod simply because there’s some heavy brush to get to a lot of the stretches I fish. Helps on the way in and out. Crazy how pretty much every setup is specific to a fisherman’s home waters.

6’6” M rod and 2500 reel is so versatile. Works well for lake largemouth too. I’ve downsized to ML rods and 2000 reels for creek fishing but I caught 100s of bass on a 6’6 Lightning Rod and a 2500 Shimano Sienna

@@smallfish6355 sometimes I’ll break out the 4”6 ultra light with a 500 size reel and throw smaller lures in the creeks as well. Caught some of my best smallies and walleye doing that. In general I think the more compact stuff is simply just the way to go if you’re creek wading or pond hopping

John this is a good video for a lot of people. I do agree with you on rod length and real size. I also like a lot of the lovers that you use. I have found that that the type of lure that is used will vary from Creek to Creek but but there are some constants. As I have grown up fishing all over the USI will state that that the helgramite that you use is the best. I know we all have our favorite little Creek lures. My favorite one that I use on a yearly basis has been a squirrel bill crank bait, I will use them in multiple colors but have found that the red fire crawl and the shed colors are the best to use.. The small mouth bass seemed to love it. Keep up the good work and God-bless.

When I started fishing, a creek fishing combo was a short(5 feet and under)ultralight rod with a tiny 500 series reel and 4-6 pound mono, and I have been going back that lately, even on bigger water. I have a little rod that I call the Magic Wand that I have been using for over 30 years, and I have probably caught more fish on it than all of my other rigs put together. Even though I have several other ultralight rigs, I still take the Magic Wand out to play sometimes.

10 lb flouro leader? I don't use "leaders", I just tie the lure to the end of the line? Don't know if I'm missing out or if it's not a big deal? Always something more to learn about fishing!
@tonyplaysbass
@tonyplaysbass 2 жыл бұрын
I started using a leader with the colored braid, actually think it may work better with lures, at least it was for me. Saves on the braid as well. I usually put about 3' leader on any tie and it lasts me most of the day.
@DropTheBunny
@DropTheBunny 2 жыл бұрын
you're not missing anything by not using a leader.
@AppalachianAnglingAdventures
@AppalachianAnglingAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
If you use thin braid, a leader is a MUST around rocks. Braid is not abrasion resistant at all, I learned my lesson after using 10lb Power Pro tied straight to the lure. Not fun to set the hook and the line cut on a rock, while you watch the hooked bass jump out of the water with your Senko in its mouth.

Thanks for the info. I wasn't sure how a medium fast rod worked. I think that's what I need for the way I fish.
@Tightt88
@Tightt88 2 жыл бұрын
Also, I love medium, light. Other factors you have to consider is your lure type. You do not want to use a medium, extra fast action rod with braid / flouro with jerk baits, cranks, spinners and in-line spinners. You will rip the hook right out of the fishes mouth. You will want moderate action or you can use mono line to allow some give / stretch. Extra fast action is great for finesse fishing though. Allows for a quick hook set.
@AppalachianAnglingAdventures
@AppalachianAnglingAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
I counteract that with fishing a loose drag to make up for the faster action and less stretch of braid. On cranks and stuff it’s loose enough to slip a lot on the hookset
@Tightt88
@Tightt88 2 жыл бұрын
@@AppalachianAnglingAdventures that is definitely an option. But the more the rod bends down the blank the more consistent pressure you will have on that fish. But loosening your drag definitely isn’t a bad idea.

Makes a difference in bass fishing or around any picky fish. Might not need it for panfishing but pan fish can see line and sometimes peck at it. A good floro is hard to see
@jimking2299
@jimking2299 2 жыл бұрын
Seems to me it's like reinventing the wheel, but making it square. Spinning was invented for small, light lures that baitcasters could not handle because of inherent design disadvantages. It's nice that BFS copes with the drawbacks with ultralight materials and extreme precision. But maybe it solves a problem that didn't exist.

Truly appreciate the tutorial today ! The one thing I didn't see was a rod with a cork handle. What's your opinion on cork over man-made materials ? I'm an OLD guy with old ways, but I've always loved cork handles. I (like a lot of people) started with neighborhood creeks. I let 20+ years of my life slide by me without fishing, but I'm hoping to retire this year. Getting back into fishing is one of my goals. I have several combos, but I just found a great deal on a Pflueger Supreme XT from Cabelas . I paired it up with a Ugly Stik 6' 6" Medium. Because of you and advice from other friends, I spooled it with 15 lb. braid and a 8 lb. fluorocarbon leader. casts very smoothly. First time braid user. Getting used to the different feel. Loved the music and always love the verse. Always be safe. Randy B.

Excellent information here from all 3 of you guys and the comments reflect that. So much info shared on rod length and action/power for the non junkies. I have been fishing the creeks with a 6 foot light power moderate action St Croix Premier spinning rod and 500 series Abu Garcia Ultra cast reel that I upgraded now to the Tournament series. It's 20 years old but I'm a zealot about maintenance. I use 10# Power Pro braided line and no leader and its strictly topwater lures and small crankbaits. The jig rod is a 6 foot light power fast action Falcon with a 2500 series Shimano Sedona with 6 or 8# copolymer line P Line and McCoy's. I miss Cabela's house brand copolymer in 6/8# camo, casualty of the merge. But craws and neg rigs cast a mile. The topwater Poppers, walking baits and small Whopper Ploppers fly out on the cast. The 6'6 spinning and longer are for pond hopping, bigger rivers and the boat trips. Thanks for sharing brother and the crew. Blessings

I always check for rods and reels from the last or beforelast year. They are often 30-50% off and you get high quality for much less money. Since I mostly fish rivers for pike, I am much more used to 8-9 ft rods with a fast tip and a long handle. But that is a very personal thing and fishing in europe is totally different to fishing in the USA. When fishing for perch I use light 7 ft rods, but still with a fast tip. Dont worry about starting to "preach", this is a thing you can really have a big discussion about. Greets from germany

Not just Pastors, but all Preachers, lol. I resemble that remark, hahaha. Thanks for the video. I'm trying to decide whether I can get a light power rod that will cast some of the smaller light lures for panfish, as well as smallmouth up to about 3lb (Shenandoah River).

I just bought my first over 100 dollar combo. The rod is so light and can not believe how sensitive it is. The reel is a baitcaster and the reel speed is extremely sensitive too. You can set your reel speed faster than usual without it birds nesting when you drop the line. It has both braking systems and it’s light weight as well. I never thought it would be much difference between a more expensive set up vs a normal every day set up. It’s a real pleasure just to fish with it. My next combo I think I’m just gonna select the rod separately from the reel and really fine tune that set up. My next reel is gonna be a Shimano curado dc or a SLX dc.

For spinning I love a few rods that fit the criteria in this vid. On the cheaper side, the Fenwick Eagle or HMX. In that $100 range it’s the St Croix Triumph and Bass X (2021 version)

If there was a HMX in med 6-10 I would definitely get it.

The timing on this video was perfect for me. I've been looking at a 6'8" medium extra fast for creek fishing and jerk baits, but haven't pulled the trigger yet. Looks like that's changing later today.

Have you heard of Limit Creek Rods? Out of Spring Valley, MN. Make a creek smallie specific rod.

Hi John…. Great video as usual…. May i suggest a giveaway of any unused combos, or just rods to your subscribers. Maybe even with some new, or used lures. Just a thought…. We will watch you either way for sure! I use Okuma reels.

I use a St. Croix 6’8” medium x-fast with a pflueger 2500 president. I use flukes a lot in creeks/rivers and a ML doesn’t have enough backbone for good hook sets to me. I do use a ML for drop shots and Ned rigs.

I use a similar setup but prefer a shorter rod. The creeks around me have so much foliage that a short rod helps make a little space.

I've moved up to Medium Heavy. I just got a 13 Fishing 7' 1" Medium Heavy Kayak rod. It has a really short handle. 13". Cashion Rods makes good short handled kayak rods too.

Hey thanks for the info. I have been a pond fisherman for a long time. Your videos are helping me explore more areas. Thanks brother. Oh also... lol I'm a pastor myself and must confess I too go 20+ after the closing announcement 😆. Love seeing scripture at the end of your videos too!

Do they make a rod that’s a 6ft medium extra fast? I love my current setup but a shorter rod would be nice.

I go 5’9” is best, fast tip, too long a rod makes for difficult creek fishing. Reel is just my “funnest” reel, loud drag, big spool, old vintage DAM Quick micro lite, straight Berkley Vanish (6lb) ,,,casts anything for a creek.. great video, cuz we see how we evolve and fine tune things cuz we wanna carry ONE setup to fish everything.
