@@DeyanStrikes The thing we care about here isn't the fact that it's breaking, it's _how_ it breaks. Shattering and breaking aren't synonymous. When something shatters it breaks into hundreds of sharp little pieces; which is why ruler manufacturers make a point of it being shatterproof, because little children could swallow the shards or try to stab other children as a joke. Think of how glass almost _explodes_ into thousands of razor-sharp little shards, and how the ruler only broke into a few- fairly large and blunt- pieces.

I also know it is a British television show with the title character being a detective by that name. They are having fun with the fact that with the Scots accent murder sounds like Mordor (LOTR reference). The Frankie Boyle joke just makes the connection more explicit.
