Crest 34 Fork Noise Update

I ordered one in November 2020 it came today .. it was supposed to come with crest forks and it came with a decent pair of rockshox (giant fathom 1 27) so maybe they changing them up . Maybe there on recall for this problem .. I was abit annoyed at first but after seeing these videos I'm kind of happy now 😊

Sorry for the late update. It took me 6 months to get a warranty claim fork. I got a new crest 34 about 4 months ago. It performs really well and doesn't make the noise anymore.

Sooooooooooo Crest is known for this issue. I FOUND THE PROBLEM!!!! It is definitely not the cartridges, although that could be one of the other issues. That creaking noise is coming from the bottom of the stem where it is press fitted into the ark where the 2 shocks join. I got back from the shop today and I had a gut feeling they did not fix the problem when they said you’re bike is all done. They didn’t listen and were confident that it was the cartridges. If you put your finger at the bottom of the stem, with the front brake on move the bike forward and you will feel the cracking sound. You will also feel it move around. That small movement is no good. I requested that the shop ask Giant to replace it with a different brand of fork. They said they will put that request in. We’ll see what happens.

A friend of mine has the same bike and I asked about the noise and he said, he had it but he went to the store where he bought it and under the warranty, they were able to change the air cartridge and the noise is gone since then (5 weeks back, Toronto) It might give you some ideas to double-check yours. same. 2021 fathom 2 27.5. Giant sent my lbs new damper and it fixed it, for now. took prob 5 weeks. know of many diff fixes and resolutions, ranging from deflating forks, adjusting rebound and then reinflating. others got upwards of $255 from giant to buy diff fork from lbs. (wish i got that) Giant sent some new suntour forks but those are now out of stock. and other fixes. frustrating to say the least b/c otherwise a great bike!

My shop said that the fork was shipped dry Once it was oiled It’s been great - no clanking noise

I spent a little time looking at mine (I took it off the bike). I thought it was a top out clunk at first. it’s not, it’s when the fork changed direction/extends. Gets worse the more compression you add. So it’s whatever bushing or slider contacts the inner fork tube or maybe the compression damper mechanism. Local bike shop hasn’t had much luck with Giant since I’m not the original owner but they’re still trying. Little less worried about riding it though.

Someone else on KZbin was complaining about the same issue and chain drops. They said Giant wasn’t even paying the bike stores labor and would have to start paying out of pocket. I wanted one of these bikes but after seeing so many complaints on the same issues I’ll look elsewhere.

I have 50 miles on this fork and the clicking finally stopped. Also the firm adjust stopped working. It’s the same firmness no matter what position I have the switch in. Giant told me to continue riding it until they come up with a solution to the problem

I have had my stance 2 with this fork for about 3 months and put about 200 miles on it. It has had an intermittent creaking noise for the past two months and it went out on me a few days ago. Once I got to the bottom of a small hill it sunk a little more than normal and and stayed there. As I was slowly making my way back to my vehicle it forcefully extended back out and slammed the top with a very loud bang. Now it is extremely stiff and if I can get it to compress it slams back and sounds like somebody is hitting the front of my bike with a hammer. The bike shop told they never heard of problems with this fork although I reading a lot of the same stories. They are going to try and get giant to warranty this but I worry replacement forks doing the same

My replacement fork has been great and probably has 1500miles on it by now. I think they have been able to resolve the issues mostly.

It took 6 months, but they did warranty the fork on my bike. That solved the issue. It actually is a pretty well performing fork.

Most of the reports were relatively early in the forks release. I got my bike in Feb and experienced zero issues, most of the issues seemed to be solved late 2021

Funny thing, I went to my lbs yesterday tried 3 different Fathoms, all 3 made that noise. I'm really surprised why GIANT hasn't done anything about this and keeps shipping this forks.

It's shocking how little Giant has done in way of customer relations here. They just keep selling these bikes. They aren't communicating, and they aren't getting them fixed at all. Several guys in the fathom group on facebook have already had to put in 2 warranty claims on this fork. I'll never buy another Giant the way that it is going.

My crest makes the same noise but it's on and off. Not as bad as this one. I guess it's expected since it's the first fork they've ever done so there will be issues. I'll probably just sell the crest and upgrade the fork in the future.

My 2021 Fathom has same fork no noise but the fork stuck in rebound but slowly released 2 hours later.??? Lbs has no idea

I just bought what may be the last Giant Fathom 2 29er in size M in the US. Had to order it through my local Giant shop to another one out of state. I'm just crossing my fingers that it has a functioning and non-clicking fork.

Check if anything is stuck between the seals and the stanchion maybe an anti bottom out system that failed as a prototype?

It's only two weeks old. I'm not gonna start pulling things apart. I will let Giant deal with it. I found a bike shop that didn't treat me like I was being petty, and am gonna they put in a warranty claim for me

I started a thread on this bike on the mtbr forums under the Giant forum. I too have the clicking. Did you change the stock chainring to 3mm offset? That seems to be another issue with this bike.

@@Olrac987 I'm pretty sure it's the damper cartridge on mine as well. When I open it all the way the up, it doesn't click, but after closing it just two or 3 clicks it starts.

@@MrRefreshinglygood I think you won't have a problem with the crest 34. This was the first year they had 130mm of travel on the crest 34 fork. I think they worked out the issues. I'm guessing that a z2 will outperform the crest, but it's not bad at all

I tried mine and it stops clicking only when the compression adjuster is at the weakest setting

When I open the rebound all the way, it doesn't make noise. If I go more than 2 clicks in it starts, so I thing it is related to the damper cartridge.

I had the same sound with my Fathom 2. Took it to the bike shop and they said my headset was loose. They tightened it up and there's no more noise.

My lbs finally heard back from giant. The fork is under warranty for clicking sound and giant will send a replacement fork whenever they get them back in stock, Which who knows how long that will be with how crazy the bike industry is right now. Also after a few long rides my fork is now permanently compressed to like a 80mm fork. Checked air pressure in fork and it was reading the correct amount so just a heads up be careful if still riding the faulty fork on trails. I had to go ahead and order a different new fork and will sell the fork giant sends whenever it comes in.

My fathom 2 has that same problem. The dealer said they where talking to giant about it. Other than that I’ve ridden the heck out of them and they feel alright.

It kept bothering me, so I called a couple more Giant shops and finally talked to a mechanic who took me seriously. Village Bike Shop in Grand Rapids, MI. I emailed him the bikes info and included the video. He submitted a warranty claim a couple days ago, so I'm just waiting to hear back. I'll update the description when I find out what Giant is gonna do.

Well I mean it seems normal for this fork model. Mine started doing this on the first ride today. Annoying, but still impressed with the fork for the price point.

@@calvincollander9681 if I knew it wasn't an issue that would affect the life and durability of the fork, I could live with the noise. The problem is that I can't seem to get an answer from Giant on whether it's a real problem or not. I've read several guys reviews saying that this fork performs almost as well as a fox 34 rhythm. I wouldnt mind a little noise if that's true.
