I have a similar ficus tree in a bonsai pot. I forgot to water it for almost 2 months. The soil was totally dry and hard to the touch. The branches shrivelled and lost all its leaves, which curled to a crisp and fell off when I shook the pot. I thought it was dead for sure. After a few weeks of watering it regularly, it amazingly started to sprout new leaves from the ends of its branches. It survived. I’m really hoping that this magnificent tree will make a similar comeback.

I lived in Venice, Florida for 20 years and there are large Banyon trees on the Main Street (Venice Avenue) park and I always felt that those trees had souls. Second, I cried over your comment about this is a tree and there's hundreds of people that have lost their lives and I absolutely agree that the lives would take priority over the tree. Don't get me wrong, I've been there many times. That tree was one of my very favorite places in Maui. But I'm really liking to see the focus on identifying people, finding people housing, people taking care of people. For instance, *Hawai'ian Princess Kawananakoa still lived in Hawai'i and was worth $215M* at the time of her death in 2022. 3) The *Bishop Estate/Kamehameha Schools* are still the *biggest private land owners in Hawai'i, one of the richest in US* in charge of caring for native Hawai'ians. Perhaps you've heard of LH (Lease Hold) real estate? Those are all owned and managed by native Hawai'ians and they don't sell you the land, only the lease to use the land. 4) There are specialized offices to manage Hawai'ian matters including *The Office of Hawai'ian Affairs* and *Council for the Advancement of Native Hawai'ians* among others. 5) The *Hawai'ian language and culture are proliferated worldwide* since annexation. We're the *most well-known of all the Polynesian islands* and *enjoy the highest household income per capita in the region* including Tahiti, Fiji, New Zealand, etc. Not too shabby for a place that once had only 37,000 people left.

I just wouldn’t try and blame the tree. It’s a tree. And if an arborist is trying to save the tree I commend that. Maybe we should save the tree as a memorial to the history you are describing? The fact that we are having this conversation allowed you to share the history behind it. If the arborist saves that tree I and many others will be grateful. For saving the tree. I admire their skill and caring. That’s not an endorsement of the history behind the tree. Would you be happier if we just let the tree die? Would that make you feel better? Probably not. Just keep educating people like you did and try and take the high road when you do.

I was just trying to be positive. I did not know that about the tree because so many native Hawaiians were making comments about saving it. I had an uncle and aunt and 3 cousins who lived in Hawaii - he was Hawaiian. My aunt and kids moved to Main on the East coast of mainland. Years ago. BUT I do know they (the native Hawaiians got the raw end of this deal. Thank you for telling me some of the history. A bit of a fun family thing... my three cousins got in a boat and were trying to row to US to see their mainland cousins. :-) Thankfully my uncle found them before they got too far. @@davidnakamura3777

I live in the TX hill country where we’ve been battling oak wilt, then the 2021 deep freeze. We lost about 25 oaks on our property. I’m not trying to compare to this utter devastation but I know how much beautiful trees can mean to people, esp as a symbol of hope to the people of Lahaina. I hope it can be saved. 🙏

I’ve sat under this tree every time we go to Maui and called my mother. Maui wouldn’t be the same without it. I feel that if it survives it would mean that Lahaina is on its way back. I know it will never be the same but evolving. The Hawaiian people are some of the most resilient people I’ve ever met. They will come back and we will be back there sitting under the banyan tree calling my mom and making even more great memories. They need to get water to soak in, they need to create rainwater harvesting structures so the water stops running off. 'Aeration' is dubious at best, and may cause more problems than it solves. The soil around the tree has already been mismanaged, that's why this effort.

You need to up the humidity in the air so that the tissues do not dry out. Even if you put barrels or bowls put a grate on top and put mesh so mosquitoes cant get in it. If you have access now to fresh water and ample supply for everyone, get those tourist misters leave the ultra fine mist on all the time or a set timer. It would be a nice place for people to cool off and gather.

A banyan is a fig tree that isn’t used to dealing with brush fires in it’s natural habitat. This tree doesn’t have thousands of years of brush fire defense evolution, so no its not guaranteed to come back. If this were a western white pine in a California forest you’d have a point but this tree needs help.

Could start fixing the situation with native wildflowers to bring back the microbes. Blowing a bunch of air is nothing compared to planting a bunch of seed. Look as plants as humans that have pets. All living stuff likes to care for other living stuff. Perhaps plants some Aloe. I would think what makes Hawaii great if the environment that supports such great plant life.

Shade clothe should be used for canopy ,trunk wrapped and reapplied so no fungus or insect ,possibly dormant oils could be used also

It's not necessary. Ash will raise pH one just has to adjust the chemistry as appropriate.
