No one surpasses the British for the best tv series , mysteries and Victorian dramas .it’s like going back in time. It’s a lot of fun but a good reminder, the past was not a better time.

Same here, neither English or Brit, neither was i born in the 60s or 70a, but I'm an addict of British Crime series. Absolutely top notch. Better than what Americans put out as crime drama...all flash and no substance. Ugh!

Credible, laconic, witty, these were such intelligent mysteries, and Cribb a splendid creation of an author who deserved to be celebrated like Simenon. Most detectives series are suave, unsubtle, and humourless but Simeon and and Lovesy were good, and one learned more about the human Psyche and crime and the complicated motives of Crime. I prefer Cribb to the sententious Holmes or the absurd Poirot. Dobie is one the few actors who could have made Cribb live. He too was underestimated like Rupert Davies. Made Maigret live. 'No star nonsense'.

Conrad Phillips !?!....what supporting casts UK television was able to call upon back then. A myriad of theatre / rep trained actors who popped up regularly on our screens. Too numerous to mention. Can anyone really imagine any of the current crop taking their place ?

seeing derrick fowlds in the cast im surprised thackery isnt sent out to arrest greengrass! in heartbeat for 20 years didnt matter what the crime was great train robbery airline hijack piracy of the qe2 GREENGRASS was the only suspect for derek! serioiusly william simons was a fantastic actor! does more whilst not seeming to do very much than any other ive seen.as an ex cop myself both thackery and ventriss were spot on accuracy wise!the genius of cribb is to modern audiences unfamiliar with the day to day victorian life is that we have the slightly dumb thackery for cribb to explain to rather than boring exposistion!dobie is so good as cribb who loves to tell you how clever he is and is normally right yet is like all the cast perfectly of his time not a modern actor playing in period and behaving as in so many shows now as a 21st century version of a victorian detective!a gem of a show! thankyou!

Any idea when this is set? I guessed early 1880s, which would tie in with the 'parade for the heroes of Tel Al Kabir' (a battle which took place in 1882) but later an offence is said to have been committed in 1887.
