Tim Cope on the Trail of Genghis Khan.
On his 10,000km journey by horse from Mongolia to Hungary, Tim arrived in Bakchisarai, Crimea in the middle of a conflict between Crimean Tatars and local Russians.
The conflict was over the market of Bakchisarai which was built in the 1990s on a holy site of mausoleums where Tatar Khans and spiritual leaders were laid to rest.

"despite having little to do with their historic homeland." more like having to do with their historic homeland. I think it is the opposite sir. I am a nationalist because I am a Crimean Tatar. My parents brought me up this way jsut as every other Crimean Tatar family should raise their children. Living in the US has nothing to do with my nationalism. I never said that I have anything against Russians, in fact I'm in Crimea right now and I just had an excellent conversation with a Russian family

Is it relatively safe if I wanted to visit Crimea? My Grandfather is Crimean Tatar and I would like to see where my family came from since I was born in the United States. This situation seems really sad how they were forced out of their homeland. I feel like my family is unlucky because my grandfather is Tatar and they were made to leave their homeland and he married my grandmother who was Native American (RIP) and they were forced out of their homeland as well.

I was in Yalta in '09. Things seemed peaceful then. I went up on top of that mountain where they have the horse back riding and tourist stuff. All Tartars were up there. I stayed at a nice motel. I can't remember the name. I guess it was operated by Russians. I am a picky eater but I found a little restaurant in the motel where I got a cheese pizza and a coke every night. I drove to Sevastopol and went to the Submarine Muesem.

Yes sorry I forgot about Genovese presence in the Crimea, I was just replying to this idiot who was claiming that Crimea is only for Tatars. He was telling lies that only Tatars are indigenous to Crimea.

You already had your empire. The Ottomans were as corrupt as all the other great empires. A better idea is Russians, Ukranians and Tatars uniting and forming the empire of the people. Populism.

LMAO I have cousins there who get discriminated upon in school. And yes, we're from Simferopol. My own little cousin is the only Tatar kid in his pre-school and until my uncles family didn't give the teacher presents and have her come over our house for dinner, my cousin was mistreated on. Yet again, you don't know what your talking about. You won't understand cause you're Slavic.

No, I don't get over emotional, you yet again, don't know what you're talking of. It's my nation, my people, do you expect me to just sit back and watch? I won't feel like a foreigner because that's my homeland and I would enjoy being viewed as an American, I would get a lot of attention, isn't that good? Uhm, give us 20-30 years, I'm pretty sure that Crimean Tatars would be the largest cultural group in Crimea.

The only difference between Russians and Crimean "Tatars" (to be exact) is that Russians DO have a homeland whereas, us Crimean Tatars don't. We, are also normal people, and just as everyone else, also want a homeland and nation with it's own government, rules, and rights.

Yes, I might be young but even I can tell that your view is so ignorant. I recommend that you spend some time with Crimean Tatars and be open to our ideas and be open to our views. I'll be sure that everything will change. It's pointless arguing with people like you. This is just going to go on forever. On the internet, emotion cannot be felt , hence, you cannot feel the pain that we Tatars feel.

Sit back and watch what? What is happening to Crimea? A war? Don't know, you can try but it could be disappointing in the end for you, you were born American and not much you can do to change that, though of course you living in Crimea might be the right thing for you. Attention is good if you are an attention seeker, it might not bring you any good, can bring envy too sometimes. How would Crimean Tatars become the largest group in 30 years?

Because the world has not got enough microscopic states like Luxembourg? The Crimea already has a vast autonomy from Ukraine, besides I don't believe that other nationalities in Crimea like Russians and Ukrainians will want to live in an independent Tatar state, so they would not support such an idea. As far as know most Crimeans would only consider joining Russia, where many Tatars (From Kazan) hold important posts in Moscow government, a small weak Crimean state would be pointless.
@CrimeanTatarBoy
@CrimeanTatarBoy 11 жыл бұрын
Haha, nope, you got that wrong. Did I not just say an official statistic, that 50% of Crimean Tatars come from EUROPEAN roots. Another 35% come from Mediterranean roots. Therefore only 15% come from Central Asian steppes. And don't go around calling me kid, sir, I find that a bit rude.

Historicall proved, that Crimean Tatars are native nation of Crimean peninsula. Nation has ancient roots. There were many different tribes, but they became united after adoption of Islam and creation of Crimean Khanate. Crimean Tatars played a big role in world history, until annexation by russian empire. In spite of this, they remain majority. But in 1944 soviet regime unfairly evicted Crimean Tatars to Middle Asia and Siberia. Today CT returned homeland, and we will make it ours, InshAllah!

What I meant is that you pose as a Crimean nationalist and seem to get emotional over this issue because your parents planted that in your head, but deep down you don't actually care that much about it. Even if you decide to move to live in Crimea, you will still feel like a foreigner there and the locals will still see you as first of all an American. And how can you hope for an independent Crimea run by a mejlis when Crimean Tatars are only 12% of the population of Crimea?
@paramonov1984
@paramonov1984 11 жыл бұрын
I know some Crimean Tatars, and unlike you they live there, yet they have no problem with other nationalities living with them. It seems that when people grow up in USA they tend to grow overly nationalistic despite having little to do with their historic homeland. What pain are talking about? You are trying to say that only Tatars suffered from Stalin, but you seem to be ignorant to the fact that it was actually Russians and Georgians that endured the worst persecutions by Stalin.
@paramonov1984
@paramonov1984 11 жыл бұрын
LOL then by that logic everyone is discriminated, this is what they call corruption! Everyone suffers from corruption equally, of course it's convenient to say Tatars are the only ones picked on and scream discrimination. Chances are the teachers mistreating pupils are often Crimean Tatars themselves on some occasions, would you also call that discrimination? I gathered from your last reply that you don't know what discrimination and corruption really means.

Turkey sided with Germany towards the end of war cause they were at the door and Turkey did everything not to be with Germans in WW2 and we even poured wheats-flour to the sea not to feed German army and we sent ships of food to Greece cause there was a famine there because of Germans and at that time bread was distributed daily by an identity card cause it was scarce. There is no need to be rude especially for people you don't know.

First you said that I have extreme nationalism and now your saying that I don't care about Crimea? You do realize that there are not too many Crimean's living here in the US so I doubt that you've spoken to some. You obviously have no idea of what you're talking of because it's my parents who brought me up this way. I even have one Crimean friend here living in Brooklyn that doesn't even give a shit about Crimea. I do. When I reach the right age, I will hopefully move to Crimea, I'm only 15.

I did read what you said, I just don't believe most of it is true. What can you know, you are first of all just another American who happens to have Crimean roots, but in reality your life is in USA and little to do with Crimea, I doubt you even care that much, otherwise how come you have not moved to settle in Crimea yet? No chance of a Crimean Republic unless Ukraine or Russia wants it to happen. Why would I ever regret what I said here?

What I'm saying is that no they didn't. If you spent time with real Tatar people you would have clearly not think so. I'm a Tatar and I can say that MOST Tatars DO NOT come from the Asian steppes. You can trust me on that sir. I believe that every nation and people have to have their own land. Crimean Tatars have been living in Crimea for thousands of years, therefore, Crimea should be owned by us. Russian, Ukrainian, Pontaic Greek, Italian, are always welcome.
