Although the attack was staged, Jesse didn't know that. It says a lot about his character that he came back for Mike, a man he had no obligations to, didn't like and even thought was going to kill him a few hours earlier.

It wasn’t staged “ to make him feel like a hero”, but to test how he might handle unexpected challenges. Could have played out many different ways.
